[Differential diagnosis of giant-cell bone tumors].

Beyond the "myeloplax tumor", other tumoral bony lesions, essentially benign, present "osteoclast-like" giant multinuclear cells at the time of the anatomo-pathologic examination. Generally, the differential diagnosis of these bony lesions with giant cells is due to the conjunction of several data such as the age of appearance of the lesion, bony location, radiological aspect, anatomopathological aspect, etc.

Arm ischemia secondary to giant cell arteritis.

Patients with severe ischemic symptoms that fail to respond to steroid therapy, despite a dramatic and continuous drop in the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, may require arterial bypass surgery to overcome arterial ischemia caused by arteritis. We report the case of a patient with bilateral subclavian artery occlusion secondary to giant cell arteritis who responded well to steroid therapy and arterial reconstructive surgery. The patient has remained well for five years.

Giant cell arteritis of the tongue presenting as macroglossia.

While the tongue has been noted to be involved in giant cell arteritis, there are no recorded instances in which the disease has been confined to the tongue. We describe a patient who presented with macroglossia and was found to have a necrotizing vasculitis with giant cells on lingual biopsy. No other evidence for systemic vasculitis was detected. This is the first case report of an isolated vasculitis of the tongue.

Giant cell reparative granuloma of the ethmoid sinus.

This article represents the fourth and fifth reported cases of GCRG that involve the ethmoid sinus. The problems encountered in establishing the diagnosis are emphasized, as are the features that differentiate it from the giant cell tumor, aneurysmal bone cyst, and hyperparathyroidism, the conditions with which it is most commonly confused. The unusually aggressive behavior, as demonstrated by these two cases, is highlighted.

Giant cell pneumonia in Letterer-Siwe disease.

An 8 month-old girl suffered from Letter-Siwe disease since one week after birth. During the chemotherapy, giant cell pneumonia caused by measles virus infection developed and led rapidly to her death. Histopathologically, alveolar spaces were lined by multi-nucleated giant cells with intranuclear and intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusion bodies. Electronmicroscopical examination of the lung revealed intranuclear inclusion bodies full of rod-shaped structures characteristic to paramyxoviruses, and irregular electron-dense materials compatible with nucleocapsid protein antigens in the cytopla…

Arm ischemia secondary to giant cell arteritis.

Six cases of arterial insufficiency of the arm secondary to giant cell arteritis are described, all in elderly white women. The clinical presentation of the occlusive disease ranged from an asymptomatic incidental physical finding to an alarming picture of severe ischemia. All patients were treated with steroids and had subsequent stabilization or improvement of extremity symptoms. Vascular reconstruction was also performed in two patients, one of whom developed rest pain after graft occlusion. Another patient had a cerebral infarction while taking prednisone, despite control of large vessel v

Giant cell arteritis and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.

Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia was found in a 67 year old woman with biopsy-proven giant cell arteritis. The patient's symptoms, as well as the hemolytic process, were suppressed by high-dose steroid therapy on several occasions. The presence of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia is consistent with the concept that erythrocyte fragmentation resulted from contract with intravascular fibrin. This is the first, reported case of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia with temporal arteritis.

HLA antigens in cases of giant cell arteritis.

HLA tissue-type antigen determination for A-, B- and C-antigens in 88 patients suffering from giant cell arteritis of the temporal artery showed no significant deviations as compared to a control material of 3164 blood donors. A weak indication of association with antigen HLA-B8 appeared to be of interest due to a corresponding indication in previous investigation. The patients were a mixed hospital material, consisting of cases of clinical temporal arteritis and patients with polymyalgia rheumatica. There was an overrepresentation of women (77%). Familial occurrence was demonstrated sporadica

Giant cell (cranial) arteritis: a clinical review.

Giant cell arteritis is a disease of the elderly which is more common than previously recognized. It is important to be aware of this condition because treatment effectively relieves symptoms and prevents serious complications. The disease is suggested when an elderly patient complains of constitutional symptoms, headache, jaw claudication, or the musculoskeletal manifestations of polymyalgia rheumatica. Abnormalities in temporal arteries or other cranial arteries, or evidence of large vessel involvement may be detected by physical examination. A markedly elevated sedimentation rate in associa

Giant cell arteritis of the female genital tract.

In a patient who had a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for endometrial adenocarcinoma, a giant cell arteritis was found in many of the myometrial and tubal vessels and in a few of the small arteries of the cervix and ovaries. On subsequent questioning, a history of treatment for polymyalgia rheumatica during the preceding 12 months was elicited. Of the three previously reported patients with giant cell arteritis of the uterus, two were suffering from polymyalgia rheumatica whilst one possibly had disseminated visceral giant cell arteritis.

Familial occurrence of giant cell hepatitis in infancy.

The repeated occurrence within one family or giant cell hepatitis terminating in death is reported. The familial form of giant cell hepatitis has a poorer prognosis than that occuring sporadically. In the first case, reported earlier, primary liver cancer developed within a short time. In the second case, reported here, the progression of the course of the disease which terminated in cirrhosis was followed in a series of histological examinatons made at five different points of time. Electronmicroscopic examination were also conducted.
