Global health diplomacy in Iraq: international relations outcomes of multilateral tuberculosis programmes.

BACKGROUND: International development programmes, including global health interventions, have the capacity to make important implicit and explicit benefits to diplomatic and international relations outcomes. Conversely, in the absence of awareness of these implications, such programmes may generate associated threats. Due to heightened international tensions in conflict and post-conflict settings, greater attention to diplomatic outcomes may therefore be necessary. We examine related 'collateral' effects of Global Fund-supported tuberculosis programmes in Iraq. METHODS: During site visits to …

Global sagittal alignment and health-related quality of life in lumbosacral spondylolisthesis.

PURPOSE: Global sagittal alignment is considered as an important aspect in the management of spinal disorders, but the evidence establishing its clinical impact in lumbosacral spondylolisthesis is still poor. This study evaluated the impact of global sagittal alignment on the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients with spondylolisthesis. METHODS: A retrospective study of 149 consecutive unoperated children and adolescents presenting with lumbosacral spondylolisthesis (117 low-grade and 32 high-grade) was performed. Two global sagittal alignment parameters were measured on standing

The global programme to eliminate lymphatic filariasis: health impact after 8 years.

BACKGROUND: In its first 8 years, the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) achieved an unprecedentedly rapid scale-up: … gy of these latter infections. CONCLUSION: The GPELF has earlier been described as a 'best buy' in global health; this present tally of attributable health benefits from its first 8 years strengthens this notion considerably.

Brucellosis in the One Health Context: Gaps in Diagnosis, Control, and Global Epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a neglected zoonotic infection with persistent transmission in many endemic regions despite long-standing control efforts. Limitations in diagnosis, fragmented surveillance systems, and inconsistent implementation of control measures continue to hinder effective disease management. The objective is to critically examine current gaps in the diagnosis, global and regional epidemiology, and control of brucellosis within a One Health framework. METHODS: A structured narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Peer-reviewed articles, reviews,

Theory of change for building stronger wildlife health surveillance systems globally.

Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases affecting wildlife have highlighted the need for wildlife health surveillance (WHS), given the interconnected role of wildlife in maintaining the health of natural resources, agriculture, and human populations. Although global policies and guidelines exist, a key gap remains in the implementation of WHS systems at local and national levels. A working group of local, national, and global stakeholders in WHS was established to address this gap. In this Viewpoint, we report a theory of change (ToC) developed to support implementation of WHS from local

Building reparative futures demands a reckoning with the crisis form of global health.

Recent cuts to global health funding and US withdrawal from the World Health Organization have generated claims that global health has entered a new crisis. This essay argues that such accounts misread the present moment. The better view is that global health operates through a 'crisis form', a modality of governance in which structural inequality is treated as ordinary, acute disruptions (Big Events) are framed as emergencies, and responses to Big Events restore institutional authority without transforming the historically continuous racialized political economy in which global health is embe…

Radiologists for global health: A guide to public charities and private foundations in radiology.

Organizations in radiology with public service missions serve as unique avenues for radiologists to give back to global communities. Broadly, these organizations can be categorized as public charities and private foundations. Public charities are characterized by direct engagement with underserved populations through volunteers and staff. Key examples within the field of radiology include RAD-AID, ROAD2IR, Imaging the World (ITW), the International Society of Radiology (ISR), Radiologists Without Borders (RWB), Project C.U.R.E., and Ultrasound Networking Interpretation Training & Supply for Un

Precision Prevention for Health: The Global Alliance Framework for the Promotion of Physical Activity.

This conceptual, implementation-oriented paper proposes a framework for precision prevention centred on physical activity promotion and early risk mitigation, aiming to support a shift from reactive disease management toward proactive prevention. The proposed framework focuses on the early identification of risk trajectories by integrating biological, environmental, and social determinants of health through systems thinking, multi-omics technologies, digital health, and behavioural science. It aims to inform tailored, context-sensitive interventions that will help to mitigate chronic non-commu

Global research on endocrine disruptors as emerging hazards for human health and the environment.

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) contaminate nearly every ecosystem and are significantly associated with different neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders. To date, there is no comprehensive literature on global publication efforts. Since there are many unknown substances, modes of action, and risks of EDs, it is necessary to provide detailed insight into global publication patterns from temporal, regional, and socioeconomic perspectives. Hence, this review article provides background information for all stakeholders, from scientists to clinicians and policymakers. A disproportionate increase

Global Health Law as a Foundation for NCD Prevention - A Statement from a Believer.

Over the past ten years, global health lawyers have actively engaged with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). A pivotal instrument in this regard is the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2003. Despite its open-ended wording, it has significantly influenced domestic tobacco regulation. For instance, thanks to this treaty, the Dutch government no longer engages with the tobacco industry and has (independent from the tobacco industry) implemented various tobacco control measures, resulting in a significant reduction in smoking. The treaty also…

Equality of opportunity and mortality around the world: implications for global public health.

BACKGROUND: Educational mobility is considered a key driver of population health. While prior studies suggest that intergenerational equality of opportunity may be linked to mortality, most evidence comes from high-income countries. Little is known about whether these associations apply globally. OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the relationship between intergenerational educational mobility and all-cause mortality across a global sample of countries. METHODS: We combine country-level data from the WHO Mortality Database and the World Bank's Global Database on Intergenerational Mobility, cover

Perspectives on Iron Deficiency as a Cause of Human Disease in Global Public Health.

Iron (Fe) is a necessary trace element in numerous pathways of human metabolism. Therefore, Fe deficiency is capable of causing multiple health problems. Apart from the well-known microcytic anemia, lack of Fe can cause severe psychomotor disorders in children, pregnant women, and adults in general. Iron deficiency is a global health issue, mainly caused by dietary deficiency but aggravated by inflammatory conditions. The challenges related to this deficiency need to be addressed on national and international levels. This review aims to summarize briefly the disease burden caused by Fe deficie…

Patient and Community Health Global Burden in a World With More Celiac Disease.

Celiac disease is one of the most common life-long disorders worldwide, with a prevalence mostly ranging between 0.7% and 2.9% in the general population and a higher frequency in females and well-defined at-risk groups, such as relatives of affected individuals and patients with autoimmune comorbidities. Increasing clinical detection is facilitated by improving awareness, implementation of a case-finding approach, and serology availability for screening at-risk patients, among other factors. Nevertheless, due to huge clinical variability, many celiac disease cases still escape diagnosis in mos

Sporothrix and Sporotrichosis: A South African Perspective on a Growing Global Health Threat.

Sporotrichosis is a disease that arises from a fungal infection caused by members of the Ascomycete genus Sporothrix. The disease has a unique history in South Africa, due to an association with gold mines, where large numbers of mine workers were infected in the 1930s and 1940s. This was likely driven by hot humid conditions and timber supports used in these mine shafts. Furthermore, the disease is the most common subcutaneous fungal infection amongst the general population in South Africa, and the large number of immunocompromised individuals increases the public health risk in the country.
