Mourner's Little Helper: The Use of Psychotropics in the Treatment of Grief-Related Distress From Opium to Opioid Antagonists.

The value of diagnosing the pathologically bereaved, as affected by a distinct disorder from depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder, has long been debated by clinicians and scholars alike. Disputes continue over whether a specific diagnosis would help those struggling after loss, even after prolonged grief disorder gained official status in 2022 as a condition recognized and defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This paper examines how different medical conceptualizations of grief have helped shape the development and use of pharmaceutical interv…

Rumination in suicide-loss survivors: Psychometric evaluation of the Persian version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS).

BACKGROUND: Survivors of suicide loss (SLSs) represent a unique group that faces a heightened risk of developing complications related to grief, often characterized by ruminating on the reasons behind their loved one's suicide, which can affect their supportive social networks. Grief rumination is considered a transdiagnostic risk factor for mental health diseases, including prolonged grief. We evaluated the psychometric and reliability of the Iranian Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS) among SLSs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted between 2023 and 2024, investiga…

Testing the cognitive-behavioral model of prolonged grief disorder (PGD): distinct and shared pathways to PTSD and depression.

BACKGROUND: The cognitive-behavioral model of prolonged grief [1] posits that the interaction between autobiographical memory deficits, negative cognitions, and avoidance contributes to the onset and persistence of prolonged grief. This study tested the model's assumptions with respect to symptoms of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and depression in bereaved groups who experienced expected and unexpected loss, separately. METHODS: The study sample comprised 728 Turkish individuals who had lost a first-degree family member. A set of self-report measures w…

Risk, Resilience, and the Two-Track Model of Dementia Grief Among Spouses of People Living With Cognitive Decline.

Pre-death grief in the context of dementia caregiving is a significant risk factor for depression, burden, anxiety, and adjustment difficulties. The Two-Track Model of Dementia Grief (TTM-DG) provides a bifocal perspective addressing the nature of the emotional attachment to a loved one living with cognitive impairment, along with a medico-psychiatric perspective associated with stress, trauma, and change in life. The aims of the present study were to empirically validate the components of the model as to identify salutary and risk factors for maladaptive grief responses. Participants were 62 …

The Role of Emotion Regulation Difficulties and Intrusive and Deliberate Rumination in the Association Between Insecure Attachment and Prolonged Grief.

This study investigated the role of emotion regulation difficulties and intrusive/deliberate rumination in the relationship between insecure attachment and prolonged grief symptoms. A total sample of 342 bereaved participants was included in the study. Both anxious and avoidant attachment styles were found to be associated with prolonged grief symptoms, with an avoidant attachment showing a stronger effect. Emotion regulation difficulties and rumination mediated the relationships between attachment styles and prolonged grief symptoms, supporting the proposed mediation model. The study identifi…

Dreams of the dead among Cambodian refugees: frequency, phenomenology, and relationship to complicated grief and posttraumatic stress disorder.

The authors investigated the importance of dreams of the deceased in the experiencing of prolonged grief (PG) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Cambodian refugees who survived the Pol Pot genocide (1975-1979). Such dreams were frequent in the last month (52% of those surveyed), and most often involved a relative who died in the Pol Pot period. Past month frequency was correlated with PG severity (r = .59) and PTSD severity (r = .52). The dreams were almost always deeply upsetting because the dreams indicated the deceased to be in a difficult spiritual state. Dreams of the deceased…

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Prolonged Grief Disorder Scale-Revised (PG-13-R).

This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Prolonged Grief Disorder Scale-Revised (PG-13-R) and examined risk factors associated with Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). The sample included 591 adults who had lost a first-degree relative 1-5 years ago. Participants completed the PG-13-R, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). Exploratory Factor Analysis supported the unidimensional structure of PGD symptoms. While the yearning symptom did not emerge as central, the meaningless symptom was a pr…

"Space for pain in measured doses": How professionals navigate the hidden presence of grief in substance use treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Despite extensive documentation of loss experiences throughout the substance use (SU) trajectory and evidence that grief-focused interventions improve treatment adherence and long-term recovery, few SU treatment programs systematically integrate grief work. Additionally, prior research has centered on the clients' perspective, overlooking the viewpoint of the professionals responsible for implementing grief-oriented interventions. The study addressed these gaps by exploring whether and how professionals integrate grief into their clinical practice. METHODS: This qualitative stud…

Psychological adjustment in grief in the United States and South Korea: Continuing bonds, meaning making, and social support.

Psychological adjustment following a loss involves grief-related proceses that may be common across cultures and culturally shaped. Continuing bonds, meaning making, and social support play significant roles in bereavement adjustment, yet their roles may vary across cultural contexts. In this cross-national study, we investigated similarities and differences in the relations among psychological distress, salient grief-related variables (i.e., internalized/externalized continuing bonds, meaning making, and implicit/explicit social support), and psychological adjustment among grievers in the U.S…

Effect of grief counseling on psychological distress and negative emotions among family members of patients with terminal tumors.

BACKGROUND: Grief counseling has become relatively established and is widely used among the families of cancer patients, effectively alleviating their psychological pain. However, in China, due to the influence of Confucianism and other traditional cultures, people generally adhere to the belief of "reincarnation to avoid death", focusing more on themes of life, such as eugenics and longevity, and paying less attention to matters related to death, including death education and grief counseling. Currently, grief counseling in China is still in an exploratory stage, and there is relatively littl…

Trajectories of sexual well-being and links with grief after a recent pregnancy loss: a dyadic longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy loss affects 1 in 4 women and is linked with poorer overall health and relationship outcomes. Despite sexual well-being's importance to health, how sexual well-being changes across time after a pregnancy loss and what might predict such changes, like perinatal grief, have never been examined, leaving practitioners and couples without knowledge of what to expect. AIM: We aimed to examine (1) how sexual satisfaction, sexual desire, sexual distress, and perinatal grief change from 10 to 25 weeks postloss for both couple members; and (2) if perinatal grief levels at 10 weeks…

Concurrent and prospective associations of intolerance of uncertainty with symptoms of prolonged grief, posttraumatic stress, and depression after bereavement.

This study examined associations of Prospective IU and Inhibitory IU with symptom-levels of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), Posttraumatic Stress-Disorder (PTSD), and depression in a sample of bereaved individuals. Specifically, 265 bereaved individuals completed measures of IU, PGD, PTSD, and depression in the first year after the death of a loved one; 134 participants again completed symptom-measures six months later. Cross-sectional analyses showed that Inhibitory IU (but not Prospective IU) was positively associated with symptom-levels of PTSD and depression (but not PGD), even when control…
