A model of posttraumatic osteomyelitis was developed in 120 Duncan-Hartley guinea-pigs. For this purpose the right femura of all animals were fractured surgically. In 60 guinea-pigs immobilisation of the fractured extremity was omitted, in remaining 60 the medullary space was splinted with intramedullary pin. Granuloma inguinale has been endemic in Papua New Guinea for at least eighty years and recently appears to be increasing, particularly in the urban centres. Most patients were found to be recent migrants to the Port Moresby area with low socioeconomic status and poor personal hygiene. The disease was found more frequently in males. A possible association between carcinoma of the penis and granuloma inguinale was observed. Lesions were chronic, progressive and located mainly in the genital region. Attempts to culture the causative agent were unsuccessful.

Eight thousand and thirteen patients were seen in dermatological clinics at Kaduna and Zaria in the Northern guinea savanna of Nigeria. Fungal infections were found in 1,224 cases and scabies in 923 cases, of which 765 patients had secondary infections. Similar results were found in other surveys from Sub-Saharan Africa.

The guinea pig maximization test was used to study the sensitizing potential of cobalt chloride; 1 % CoCl2 was used for injection and 5 % for topical application. The animals were challenged twice; in series I epicutaneous testing was performed 3 weeks after sensitization and intradermal testing after yet another week. Propylene glycol, previously indicated to be ototoxic and to produce "deafness," was studied in the middle ear space of guinea pigs. Ninety percent propylene glycol produced conductive middle ear problems, but there was no loss of hair cells above that found in normal untreated animals. Ten percent propylene glycol produced no negative effects in the middle ear or elsewhere. Topical ear drops containing high concentrations of propylene glycol are contraindicated in cases with perforation of the tympanic membrane.

The authors present the results of morphological study of experimentally-induced conjunctivitis and keratitis induced in guinea pigs by salmonellae. It was revealed that injuries of the conjunctiva and cornea in salmonellae infection were different by development and morphological manifestations from keratoconjunctivitis caused by shigellae. This difference was due to specific peculiarities of the pathogenic properties of salmonellae and shigellae clearly expressed on the given experimental model.

Vascular anatomy of the eustachian tube has received little attention in the world's medical literature. Forty guinea pigs were perfused with Berlin Blue as a contrast medium and the eustachian tube microvascular architecture visualized through surface preparations. A diffuse, dense two-layered capillary network was found which followed the distribution of mucous glands. Five animals suffering from suppurative otitis media showed marked capillary congestion with increased vessel to tissue density. Relationships to gross arterial and venous supply as found in the human are discussed.

The efficacy of hydroxocobalamin (vitamin B12a) as a specific, nontoxic antidote in acute cyanide poisoning was tested. Guinea pigs receiving lethal intravenous NaCN injections were treated with either vitamin B12a or saline solution. There was a statistically significant antidotal effect of the vitamin. No toxic effect was observed with large doses of the vitamin.
