[Acoustic stimulation and adaptation to noise of the developing mouse auditory system].

To assess the effects of an acoustically enriched environment during the auditory system development, groups of mouse pups, from two strains (Swiss Albinos Rb-3 and deafness, the latter carrying a recessive gene [dn] making homozygous dn/dn totally deaf), were exposed to pulsed pure-tone stimulation (2 500 Hz; 85 +/- 5 dB SPL) at different periods of development from conception to weaning. Growth curve, weight at 40 days, eye opening and behaviour at 24 days to the same stimulus were analyzed as a function of the mother's audition (hearing or deaf) and of the period of acoustic exposure: expos

Sensitization and habituation of the plantar cushion reflex in cats.

The plantar cushion reflex in cats was examined as a model system in a mammal for the study of the effects of repeated stimulation on neural transmission. Effects of various frequencies and intensities of stimulation were similar to those seen in other reflex systems. For instance, for a fixed number of stimuli, habituation of the plantar cushion reflex was more marked at 10 Hz than at 2.0 Hz, and with 1.0 X threshold stimulation than with 5.0 X threshold stimulation. Sensitization occurred at intermediate intensities and frequencies of stimulation. Dorsal root potentials were studied; changes

Neural circuit underlying individual differences in visual escape habituation.

Emotions like fear help organisms respond to threats. Repeated predator exposure leads to adaptive responses with unclear neural mechanisms behind individual variability. We identify two escape behaviors in mice-persistent escape (T1) and rapid habituation (T2)-linked to unique arousal states under repetitive looming stimuli. Combining multichannel recording, circuit mapping, optogenetics, and behavioral analyses, we find parallel pathways from the superior colliculus (SC) to the basolateral amygdala (BLA) via the ventral tegmental area (VTA) for T1 and via the mediodorsal thalamus (MD) for T2

Role of Sex and Age on Cardiovascular and Autonomic Responses During Acute and Repeated Restraint Stress in Rats.

In this study we evaluated the influence of sex (male × female adult rats) and age (adult × adolescent × aged male rats) in expression and habituation of the cardiovascular and autonomic responses to restraint stress in rats. For this, arterial pressure, sympathetically-mediated cutaneous vasoconstriction and heart rate (HR) were assessed in Wistar rats during a single (acute) or the 10th session of restraint. We found similar cardiovascular responses during the acute session of restraint stress in male and female animals. Cardiovascular habituation was evident as an accelerated HR return to p

Influence of strain on expression and habituation of autonomic and cardiovascular responses to restraint stress in rats.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of rat strain in expression of autonomic and cardiovascular changes during acute exposure to restraint stress, as well as in habituation of these physiological responses upon repeated exposure to restraint. For this, blood pressure, heart rate (HR) and sympathetically-mediated cutaneous vasoconstriction were assessed in Wistar (control strain), Long-Evans, Holtzman and spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) rats during acute or 10th 60-min session of restraint stress. We observed that HR returned faster to baseline values during recovery of the acute sessio

Effects of sensation seeking on habituation to novelty: An EEG study.

Sensation seeking is characterized by a strong need for novelty and has been associated with various risk-taking behaviors. Using the extreme between-group design, the current study investigated the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying habituation to novelty processing in sensation seeking. Twenty high sensation seekers (HSS) and 20 low sensation seekers (LSS) performed an auditory oddball task while their EEG was recorded. The results revealed that both the novelty P3 and midfrontal theta power decreased from the first to the second half for LSS but not for HSS. Additionally, this reduc

Habituation and rebound to thalamic deep brain stimulation in long-term management of tremor associated with demyelinating neuropathy.

Some patients may experience tolerance to chronic ventral intermediate (ViM) thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS), which may include habituation (loss of sustained tremor control over weeks to days after an adjustment) and rebound (a temporary increase in tremor intensity after stopping DBS). We observed an association between these efficacy limiting phenomena with co-morbid demyelinating sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy (MRT-PN). The clinical and treatment characteristics of neuropathy and tremor pre- and post-DBS are described through retrospective chart review of five patients with MRT-P

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and habituation to seasickness.

OBJECTIVE: Seasickness may impose severe limitations on the performance of ships' crew. Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) assess the function of the saccule, the organ responsible for monitoring vertical linear acceleration, which has been found to be the most provocative motion stimulus in the evolution of motion sickness. We used the cVEMP test in a prospective evaluation of susceptibility and habituation to seasickness. METHODS: Forty-six naval recruits underwent the cVEMP test before exposure to sea conditions. After 6 months' sailing experience, participants complete

A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex responses to overtly presented fearful faces in posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated exaggerated amygdala responses and diminished medial prefrontal cortex responses during the symptomatic state in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). OBJECTIVES: To determine whether these abnormalities also occur in response to overtly presented affective stimuli unrelated to trauma; to examine the functional relationship between the amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex and their relationship to PTSD symptom severity in response to these stimuli; and to determine whether responsivity of these regions habituates normally

The cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonist SR141716A reduces appetitive and consummatory responses for food.

RATIONALE: The CB1 receptor antagonist SR141716A reduces food intake in rats. This effect is likely to depend on modulation of reward related processes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of SR141716A on responding for food under a second order instrumental task in which responding and consumption of food can be separated, and on Pavlovian responding for a stimulus predictive of food reward. METHODS: Instrumental responding and pellet consumption following administration of SR141716A (0-3 mg/kg) were recorded under an FI5 min FR5(5:S) operant schedule that incorporates both a 5 min initia

Interleukin 1alpha alters hippocampal serotonin and norepinephrine release during open-field behavior in Sprague-Dawley animals: differences from the Fawn-Hooded animal model of depression.

Detection of two biogenic amine neurotransmitters, serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) within the CA1 region of the hippocampus (HPC) of behaving male laboratory animals (Rattus norvegicus), was performed with miniature carbon sensors (BRODERICK PROBES) and in vivo semidifferential microvoltammetry after acute administration of the soluble immune factor, human recombinant, interleukin (IL) 1alpha (10 and 100 ng/kg i.p.). Two animal models were compared, i.e., (a) the Sprague-Dawley (SD) model, a strain neither biochemically nor immune-challenged and (b) the Fawn-Hooded (FH) model, a bioch

Characteristics of habituation of the sympathetic skin response to repeated electrical stimuli in man.

OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of repeating electrical peripheral nerve stimulation on latency, duration and amplitude of the sympathetic skin response (SSR). METHODS: SSRs were elicited in all limbs by median and peroneal nerves stimuli. In 10 subjects, 20 stimuli were applied at random time intervals (15-20 s). Another test was performed in 7 subjects using the same protocol, but switching the stimulation site every 5 or 10 stimuli without warning. RESULTS: The mean amplitude of right palmar response to right peroneal nerve stimulation decreased from 5.05+/-0.76 (SEM) mV at the first stim

Methamphetamine-induced neurotoxicity alters locomotor activity, stereotypic behavior, and stimulated dopamine release in the rat.

The neurochemical evidence of methamphetamine (MA)-induced toxicity to dopaminergic nerve terminals is well documented; however, the functional consequences are not clearly defined. The present study was designed to investigate whether MA-induced dopamine depletions affect locomotor activity, stereotypic behavior, and/or extracellular dopamine concentrations in the neostriatum. Male rats were treated with a neurotoxic regimen of MA (10 mg/kg, i.p., every 2 hr for four injections) or vehicle and tested for functional effects 1 week later. Animals that had received the neurotoxic regimen of MA s

Vestibular tests in the selection of cosmonauts.

Vestibulo-vegetative disorders in cosmonauts and astronauts occurring during space flight compel otolaryngologists to search for vestibular tests enabling a precise evaluation of the activity of the vestibular apparatus and showing disposition to motion sickness. Otoneurological investigation of Polish candidates for cosmonaut status consisted of the following vestibular tests: caloric, rotatory, optokinetic, swinging torsion, statokinesimetric and vestibulo-vegetative. The value of various vestibular tests for aviation and space medicine is presented in this paper, taking into account the res

Orexin 2 receptor regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) response to acute and repeated stress.

Orexins are hypothalamic neuropeptides that have a documented role in mediating the acute stress response. However, their role in habituation to repeated stress, and the role of orexin receptors (OX1R and OX2R) in the stress response, has yet to be defined. Orexin neuronal activation and levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were found to be stimulated with acute restraint, but were significantly reduced by day five of repeated restraint. As certain disease states such as panic disorder are associated with increased central orexin levels and failure to habituate to repeated stress, the effec

Visual recognition memory, manifested as long-term habituation, requires synaptic plasticity in V1.

Familiarity with stimuli that bring neither reward nor punishment, manifested through behavioral habituation, enables organisms to detect novelty and devote cognition to important elements of the environment. Here we describe in mice a form of long-term behavioral habituation to visual grating stimuli that is selective for stimulus orientation. Orientation-selective habituation (OSH) can be observed both in exploratory behavior in an open arena and in a stereotyped motor response to visual stimuli in head-restrained mice. We found that the latter behavioral response, termed a 'vidget', require

Modulation of visual evoked potentials by high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in migraineurs.

OBJECTIVE: High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) modulates cortical excitability. We investigated its effect on visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in migraine. METHODS: Thirty-two headache-free controls (CO), 25 interictal (MINT) and 7 preictal migraineurs (MPRE) remained after exclusions. VEPs to 8' and 65' checks were averaged in six blocks of 100 single responses. VEPs were recorded before, directly after and 25min after 10Hz rTMS. The study was blinded for diagnosis during recording and for diagnosis and block number during analysis. First block amplitudes and ha
