Reevaluation of a kindred with congenital absence of dermal ridges, syndactyly, and facial milia.

We observed a newborn infant of a previously reported kindred with absent dermal ridge pattern, syndactyly, and facial milia. The infant's features were consistent with three other kindreds, suggesting that this entity is a single disorder with variable expression. Furthermore, this entity should be considered in the differential diagnosis of excessive congenital facial milia and erosions.

A Case of Colocalized Vitiligo and Psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis and vitiligo are common dermatologic conditions with underlying autoimmune etiologies. There are few reports of concomitant and colocalized disease. Several theories have been proposed to explain this rare presentation. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to present a rare case of a concomitant and colocalized presentation of vitiligo and psoriasis. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 72-year-old male was referred for treatment of a 30-year history of psoriasis and 5-year history of colocalized vitiligo. The patient had no other underlying autoimmune diseases inclu

Tips to treat the 5 most common nail disorders: brittle nails, onycholysis, paronychia, psoriasis, onychomycosis.

Nail disorders are difficult to treat and often frustrating both for patients and clinicians. Because of the slow growth rate of the nail plate and the difficulty of getting the drug actives to penetrate the nail tissues, it is usually necessary to wait several months before seeing the results of treatments. This delay often leads to discontinuation of therapy by the patients. This article therefore helps clinicians to find the right treatment of the 5 most common nail disorders (brittle nails, onycholysis, paronychia, psoriasis, and onychomycosis) and provides practical tips that might improv

Transungual delivery of terbinafine by iontophoresis in onychomycotic nails.

Trans-nail permeability is limited due to the innate nature of the nail plate and the recent investigations indicated the potential of iontophoresis in enhancing the transungual drug delivery in normal nails. However, the onychomycotic nails differ from the normal nails with respect to the anatomical and biological features. The current study investigated the effect of iontophoresis (0.5 mA/cm(2) for 1 h) on the transungual delivery of terbinafine in onychomycotic finger and toe nails. The presence of fungi in the onychomycotic nails was diagnosed by potassium hydroxide (KOH) microscopy. Passi

Case for diagnosis. Acrokeratoelastoidosis.

Acrokeratoelastoidosis is a type of palmoplantar keratoderma first described by Oswaldo Gonçalves Costa, a Brazilian Dermatologist from the state of Minas Gerais. It is a rare autosomal-dominant genodermatosis; however it may occur sporadically. The disease is not congenital; rather, its onset occurs in childhood or adolescence. Clinically, the condition is characterized by multiple yellowish papules, sometimes glossy and keratotic, measuring approximately 2-4 mm in diameter, sometimes umbilicated, and located symmetrically on the sides of the hands and feet, symmetry being the most typical si

Management of palmoplantar pustulosis: do we need to change?

Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is difficult to treat. There is little hard evidence for the efficacy of any treatment and no published guidelines for its management. A number of exacerbating factors are well documented and there is some evidence for the importance of others. Smoking is the most recognized environmental trigger and recent research has concentrated on the role of eccrine sweat glands in this regard. Other factors, including tonsillar streptococcal infection and gluten sensitivity, may be important in selected cases. The aim of this review is to challenge dermatologists to conside

Today's treatments options for onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis can be cured even if fungi are sometimes difficult to eradicate; the treatment is often lengthy and requires patience. The choice of agents should be based on numerous factors including patient's age and health, causative organism, clinical type of onychomycosis, number of affected nails and severity of nail involvement. We review current and future treatments for onychomycosis. We will also consider treatment options in patients with poor prognostic factors suggesting possible treatment failure.
