Screening for Chlamydia trachomatis in secondary schools, family planning and occupational health centres in Luxembourg.

BACKGROUND: We conducted a prospective pilot screening study in three settings in Luxembourg where routine urine testing is carried out independently for other purposes with a short sexual behaviour questionnaire to estimate prevalence and determine risk factors of urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis infection. METHODS: Screening was offered to sexually active volunteer participants aged less than 25 years in three settings: i) women in three family planning centres (FPC), ii) young women and men in 29 secondary schools and iii) women and men in an occupational health centre (OHC) for newly recr

Employee absenteeism based on occupational health visits in an urban tertiary care Canadian hospital.

(1) To merge Occupational Health (OH) and Human Resources (HR) administrative data to describe reasons for absenteeism among hospital employees and (2) to consider the advantages and disadvantages of using these combined data for surveillance of health care workers. This study utilized a retrospective cohort design, involving a record linkage of two administrative databases at a Canadian general hospital: OH and HR. Data were included for the period of June 1, 2004, to May 31, 2005. Data linkage was performed using sex, postal code, and date of birth. The most common self-reported reasons for

The North Country on the Job Network: a unique role for occupational health nurses in a community coalition.

1. Through a community based program, nurses were hired by a rural medical center to facilitate care for injured workers in the community. This placed the nurses outside the industrial and insurance arenas. 2. Rapid access to care and expedited return to work were made possible largely through improved communication, facilitated by the nurse case coordinators, among all involved parties (i.e., workers, employers, health care providers, insurance carriers). 3. The program provides access to occupational health nurses, or case managers, to a large number of rural workers--many of whom work for s

Contact urticaria from rubber gloves: an occupational skin disorder for health care workers.

Rubber allergy is an important occupational health problem for an increasing number of patients. It may produce a type I urticarial reaction, or more commonly, a type IV delayed eczematous dermatitis. The risk groups include health care workers, rubber industry workers, and children with spina bifida (meningomyelocele) and urogenital abnormalities. In this report, we describe a physician with a relevant history who was found to have type I hypersensitivity to rubber by prick test and use test. Our aim is to increase awareness among physicians, discuss diagnosis and management, and review the l

The health risks of occupational stress in islamic industrial workers during the Ramadan fasting period.

During Ramadan, Moslems are required strictly to avoid fluids and nourishment from dawn to sunset. Heat stress during such abstinence represents a substantial health hazard. In the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) where numerous Moslems, particularly of Turkish origin, perform heat work and other heavy labour, we observed moderate to severe health disturbances in such labourers during Ramadan, e.g.: tachycardia, severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and circulatory collapse. The severe dehydration of these workers was demonstrated by substantial increases in their hematocrit, serum pr

[Sentinel events in occupational medicine: the example of Local Health Unit No. 1 of the Tuscany region].

In order to apply the "sentinel health event" methodology we reviewed the certificates of 4541 deaths occurred in the period 1/01/83-31/12/88 in the USL 1 (Lunigiana) in the Tuscany Region. The histories of 6 work accidents, 6 cases of pleural mesothelioma, and 2 cases of sinunasal cancers have been collected by means of personal interviews and investigation at various workplaces. It should be noted that a case of sinunasal cancer was discovered in a farmer who used lead arsenate as an insecticidal. Furthermore the wife of a shipyard worker died of pleural mesothelioma. The death of a shipyard

Ultralow volume application of organophosphate concentrate in grain terminals: a new occupational health hazard.

The introduction of ultralow volume (ULV) application of the organophosphate pesticide Fenitrothion in grain terminals presents a risk to workers of skin contact with concentrate. Blood testing, by the Ellman method, of a group of five grain terminal workers working on grain treatment showed a lowering of mean red blood cell cholinesterase (RBC ChE) activity to 23 units/gm Hb (normal value 28-40) with a range of 16-29. The probable cause was identified as percutaneous absorption of Fenitrothion concentrate by workers using ungloved hands to clean blocked drip feed nozzles. Modification of work

Traumatic Brain Injury in First Responders: From Hidden Burden to Occupational Health Action.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), including concussion, is an important but often underrecognized occupational injury among first responders. Despite frequent exposure to circumstances that increase the risk of TBI, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel often lack consistent pathways for injury recognition, reporting, clinical assessment, rehabilitation, and safe return to duty. This topical issue of the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation brings together emerging evidence on TBI prevalence, underrecognition, mental health, functional recovery, and occu

Heat Exposure and Fall Accidents in Construction: Informing Occupational Safety and Health Policy in Korea.

BACKGROUND: As the frequency and intensity of heat waves increase due to climate change, concerns regarding construction worker safety are growing. While research on heat-related illnesses is extensive, studies examining the impact of heat exposure on construction fall accidents-the leading cause of occupational fatalities-remain limited. This study investigated the relationship between daily maximum temperature and fall accidents. METHODS: We analyzed 42,220 fall accidents reported to the Republic of Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency between 2015 and 2019. Daily maximum temperature

Integrating Oral Health Into Occupational Therapy: Knowledge, Practices, Barriers and Facilitators-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Oral health is essential for overall wellbeing and daily functioning, yet its integration into occupational therapy remains limited. Despite the profession's potential to promote oral health through person-centred, occupation-based approaches, evidence of this integration is scarce. This systematic review explores occupational therapists' (OTs) knowledge and practices in oral health care and examines the barriers and facilitators to incorporating oral health care into their clinical practice. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted across four databases: MEDLINE (Ovid), CINA
