Neuroception of safety is associated with elevated heart rate variability in the laboratory and more frequent heart rate variability increases in everyday life.

OBJECTIVE: Feeling comfortable and safe has been discussed to foster health and well-being. However, the pathways to better health are complex, involving both behavioral and physiological routes. METHODS: In this study, we examined the role of safety perception for cardiac health by (1) examining associations with baseline heart rate variability (HRV; Study 1) and (2) evaluating a novel measure of autonomic cardiac flexibility in daily life, namely increases in HRV independent of metabolic demands (ImdHRVi; Study 2). RESULTS: Study 1 (N = 76) found evidence for a positive association between…

Towards non-invasive heart rate monitoring in free-ranging cetaceans: a unipolar suction cup tag measured the heart rate of trained Risso's dolphins.

Heart rate monitoring in free-ranging cetaceans to understand their behavioural ecology and diving physiology is challenging. Here, we developed a simple, non-invasive method to monitor the heart rate of cetaceans in the field using an electrocardiogram-measuring device and a single suction cup equipped with an electrode. The unipolar suction cup was placed on the left lateral body surface behind the pectoral fin of Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus) and a false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) in captivity; their heart rate was successfully monitored. We observed large heart rate oscillati…

Heart rate and heart rate variability assessment identifies individual differences in fear response magnitudes to earthquake, free fall, and air puff in mice.

Fear behaviors and fear memories in rodents have been traditionally assessed by the amount of freezing upon the presentation of conditioned … levator, and a laboratory-version earthquake. We showed that these fearful events rapidly increased heart rate (HR) with simultaneous reduction of heart rate variability (HRV). Cardiac changes can be further analyzed in details by measuring three distinct phases: namely, the rapid rising phase in HR, the maximum plateau phase during which HRV is greatly decr …

Depression Associated with Reduced Heart Rate Variability Predicts Outcome in Adult Congenital Heart Disease.

In adult congenital heart disease (ACHD), major depressive disorder (MDD) represents a frequent comorbidity. In non-CHD, adverse outcome is predicted by MDD and heart rate variability (HRV), whereas in ACHD their prognostic relevance is unknown. We prospectively evaluated 171 patients (age 35.6 ± 11.4 years; male 42.7%, mean observation time 54.7 ± 14.9 months). Binary regression analysis calculated the association between MDD and HRV. Cox proportional survival analysis estimated their impact on decompensated heart failure and all-cause mortality (HF/death), supraventricular and ventricular ta…

Is Current Drug Therapy for Heart Failure Sufficient to Control Heart Rate of Patients?

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that heart failure (HF) patients with heart rate (HR) < 70 bpm have had a better clinical outcome and lower morbidity and mortality compared with those with HR > 70 bpm. However, many HF patients maintain an elevated HR. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate HR and the prescription of medications known to reduce mortality in HF patients attending an outpatient cardiology clinic. METHODS: We consecutively evaluated patients seen in an outpatient cardiology clinic, aged older than 18 years, with diagnosis of HF and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 45%. Patients with …

A protocol to study ex vivo mouse working heart at human-like heart rate.

Genetically modified mice are widely used as experimental models to study human heart function and diseases. However, the fast rate of normal mouse heart at 400-600bpm limits its capacity of assessing kinetic parameters that are important for the physiology and pathophysiology of human heart that beats at a much slower rate (75-180bpm). To extend the value of mouse models, we established a protocol to study ex vivo mouse working hearts at a human-like heart rate. In the presence of 300μM lidocaine to lower pacemaker and conductive activities and prevent arrhythmia, a stable rate of 120-130bpm …

Heart Rate and Outcomes in Hospitalized Patients With Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction.

BACKGROUND: A lower heart rate is associated with better outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (EF). Less is known about this association in patients with HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to examine associations of discharge heart rate with outcomes in hospitalized patients with HFpEF. METHODS: Of the 8,873 hospitalized patients with HFpEF (EF ≥50%) in the Medicare-linked OPTIMIZE-HF (Organized Program to Initiate Lifesaving Treatment in Hospitalized Patients with Heart Failure) registry, 6,286 had a st…

Acute effects of water immersion on heart rate variability in participants with heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Water immersion and aquatic exercise can be an important therapeutic tool in patients suffering from heart disease (HD). However, the effects of water immersion on heart rate variability (HRV) in HD participants remain unknown. METHODS: Twenty-eight volunteers in sinus rhythm within the same age range took part in this study: 18 HD and ten healthy controls (HC). Heart rhythm was collected with a heart rate monitor (sampling rate 1000 Hz) for periods of 10 min at rest in the supine position on land, standing on land (STL) and standing in water (STW) to the xiphoid process. RESULTS…

Heart rate-dependent left ventricular diastolic function in patients with and without heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Chronic heart rate (HR) reduction in the treatment of heart failure (HF) with systolic dysfunction is beneficial, but the immediate mechanical advantages or disadvantages of altering HR are incompletely understood. We examined the effects of increasing HR on early and late diastole in humans with and without HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied force-interval relationships of the left ventricle (LV) in 11 HF patients and 14 control subjects. HR was controlled by right atrial pacing, and LV pressure was recorded by a micromanometer-tipped catheter. The time constant of isovolumic re…

Effect of diaphragmatic breathing on heart rate variability in ischemic heart disease with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Reduced heart rate variability is associated with an unfavorable prognosis in patients with ischemic heart disease and diabetes. Whether change in breathing pattern can modify the risk factor in these patients has not been definitely proved. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of diaphragmatic breathing on heart rate variability (HRV) in ischemic heart disease patients with diabetes. METHODS: Study population consisted of 145 randomly selected male patients of which 45 had ischemic heart disease (IHD), 52 had IHD and diabetes (IHD-DM) and the remaining 48 had IHD and diabetic neuro…

Clinical, hemodynamic and sympathetic neural correlates of heart rate variability in congestive heart failure.

Heart rate (HR) variability has long been recognized as a sign of cardiac health. In the presence of heart disease, HR variability decreases, an observation that has been associated with poor prognosis in a number of recent studies. HR variability is particularly altered in congestive heart failure (CHF), a condition associated with a number of typical functional hemodynamic and neurohumoral alterations. The relation of measurements of HR variability to these abnormalities in patients with heart failure has not been carefully examined. Twenty-three patients (19 men, 4 women, mean age 49 years)…

Pacing and reperfusion induced arrhythmias: protection by slow heart rate in the rat heart.

Using the isolated perfused rat heart with transient (10 min) regional ischaemia induced by coronary artery ligation, we have shown that slow heart rate can dramatically reduce the vulnerability of the myocardium to reperfusion induced ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. In the heart rate range of 200-400 beats.min-1, slower heart rates exerted a frequency dependent protective effect against reperfusion induced arrhythmias. At the optimal rate of 200 beats.min-1, the incidence of total ventricular fibrillation (irreversible plus reversible) and ventricular tachycardia fell to…

Heart rate during a defined exercise test in horses with heart and lung diseases.

During a gradually increasing exercise test heart rates were determined in healthy animals and in 2 groups of sick horse. These included 31 animals with a chronic pulmonary disorder and 5 with chronic heart disease. The alteration in heart rate was correlated with the clinical signs exhibited. In the horses with lung disease there was a close correlation between the stage of the diseases and the heart rate during the exercise test. In 3 animals with heart valve disease there was no apparent difference in heart rate compared with healthy horses. On the other hand the exercising heart rate of ho…

[The effect of cyanides and antidotes on the heart rate in rat heart preparations in situ].

Effects of sodium-cyanide and some of its antidotes and antagonists such as sodium-nitrite, 4-dimethylaminophenol (DMAP), sodium-thiosulphate and alpha-adrenergic blocking agents on the heart rate of rats in situ under conditions of the artificial breathing have been studied. Also, effects of opioid receptor agonist, naloxane, on the heart of the poisoned animals have been studies. Sodium-cyanide causes strong and irreversible effects on the heart rate which are completely abolished by effects of sodium-nitrite, 4-DMAP and sodium-thiosulphate, and partly and timely limited by effects of alpha …

Extent of heart rate reduction during hospitalization using beta-blockers, not the achieved heart rate itself at discharge, predicts the clinical outcome in patients with acute heart failure syndromes.

AIM: It has been uncertain whether patients with acute heart failure syndromes (AHFSs) benefit from a lower heart rate (HR) itself or from treatment for heart failure (HF) that reduces sympathetic tone with consequent HR reduction (HRR). The present study investigated the influence of HRR during hospitalization on the prognosis of AHFS patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 421 AHFS patients, we analyzed the relationship between HRR during hospitalization and the prognosis after discharge. During a mean follow-up period of 1.9 years, 76 and 55 patients died or were re-hospitalized for HF, respecti…

Addition of minute ventilation to rate-response pacing improves heart rate score more than accelerometer alone.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate score (HRSc) ≥70%, a novel parameter, predicts risk of mortality in patients with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and identifies patients who have survival benefit with DDDR vs DDD pacing. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if DDDR pacing lowers HRSc, and a blended sensor with minute ventilation (MV) and accelerometer (XL) improves HRSc more than accelerometer (XL) alone in patients requiring pacemakers (PMs). METHODS: HRSc, the percentage of all beats in the tallest 10-beat/min device histogram bin, was calculated. Data from the Limiting Chr…

Respiration rate, heart rate, and body temperature values in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) during barbiturate anesthesia.

Respiration rate, heart rate, and body temperature values were obtained from 14 cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) during neurosurgery under barbiturate anesthesia. Vital sign values markedly declined below baseline during the early stages of surgery, steadily increased as surgery progressed and neared completion, and finally returned to baseline by the end of the postsurgical recovery period. There was considerable variability among the 14 monkeys, but the ranking of each monkey relative to the others remained constant across the period of observation. The findings suggested that the cy…
