A preliminary study of the morphology of the upper gum pad at the age of 6 months.

Longitudinal records of 109 individuals born at full term and 30 pairs of twins have been used to study factors which determine the form of the upper gum pad at the age of six months and before the emergence of teeth. The contribution of heredity was found to be less than at birth, and that derived from the underlying teeth to have increased during the first six months of life. It is concluded that the shape of the alveolar process may be modified by physical forces such as sucking habits before teeth erupt into the mouth.

Growth status of children with and without sickle cell trait.

Because of the suggestions that children with sickle cell trait (Hb/AS) are smaller and lighter, the anthropometric measurements of 50 such children from polygamous families were compared with a matched group of 50 children with normal hemoglobin (Hb/AA) who were offspring of the same fathers and were living under identical conditions. This technique was adopted in minimize the effects of heredity and nutrition. When these hereditary and nutritional effects were excluded there were no significant differences between the anthropometric measurements of the two groups.

Signs of impaired blood-brain barrier function and lower IgG synthesis within the central nervous system in patients with schizophrenia or related psychosis, compared to that in controls.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence has accumulated that an inflammatory, possibly autoimmune-mediated, process in the central nervous system (CNS), and by … ratios of CSF-albumin to P-albumin than patients in full symptom remission, and that patients with heredity for schizophrenia or related psychosis had lower IgG indices than patients without heredity. CONCLUSIONS: In this study we show that patients with schizophrenia or related psychosis have impaired BBB function and lower IgG synthesis within the CNS, …

Psoriasis and associated variables in classification and outcome of juvenile idiopathic arthritis - an eight-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: To study the impact of psoriasis and features associated with psoriasis on classification and outcome in a population-based follow-up cohort of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). METHODS: In all, 440 children with JIA were followed for a median of 8 years in a prospective Nordic population-based cohort study. Data for remission was available for 427 of these children. The presence of psoriasis, psoriasis-like rash, dactylitis, nail pitting, enthesitis, tenosynovitis and heredity was assessed in relation to ILAR classification and remission. RESULTS: Clinical findi…

Genetic Variation in the Platelet Endothelial Aggregation Receptor 1 Gene Results in Endothelial Dysfunction.

Platelet Endothelial Aggregation Receptor 1 (PEAR1) is a newly identified membrane protein reported to be involved in multiple vascular and thrombotic processes. While most studies to date have focused on the effects of this receptor in platelets, PEAR1 is located in multiple tissues including the endothelium, where it is most highly expressed. Our first objective was to evaluate the role of PEAR1 in endothelial function by examining flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery in 641 participants from the Heredity and Phenotype Intervention Heart Study. Our second objective was to further de…

Two patients fitted the description of Thomsen congenital myotonia, with a pattern of dominating autosomic heredity and/or absence of weakness episodes or worsening factors for their condition. [Clinical features and X-ray manifestations of mucopolysaccharidosis-II-B].

Mucopolysaccharidosis-II (MPS-II) and MPS-I are both characterized by gargoylist dwarfism. MPS-II is of X-linked recessive heredity. Five cases of MPS-II-B in our series were followed up for ten years. Corneal opacity and dysmnesia were not found in all of them. Although MPS-II possessed many radiologic similarities to MPS-I, the former presented certain characteristic features such as butterfish-like vertebra, and small triangular malformation of carpal bones and tarsal scaphoid etc.

A pre-visit tailored website enhances counselees' realistic expectations and knowledge and fulfils information needs for breast cancer genetic counselling.

Counselees who are the first in their family to request breast cancer genetic counselling often don't know what to expect or have unrealistic expectations of genetic counselling. Receiving tailored information might help them to prepare for their first visit. We conducted a study of the effects of a pre-visit website providing computer-tailored information (E-info gene(ca)), on counselees' expectations, knowledge about breast cancer and heredity and information needs. Counselees were randomized to receive usual care (UC) or UC plus website. All counselees completed a baseline questionnaire and…

Do you know this syndrome? Ascher´s syndrome: clinical findings of little known triad.

Ascher's syndrome consists of double lip, blepharochalasis and sometimes non-toxic thyroid enlargement. It is a rare, benign, rarely reported, and sometimes misdiagnosed condition that most often affects patients under 20 years old. The etiology remains unknown, although factors such as trauma, hormonal dysfunction and heredity have been suggested. Treatment based on surgical intervention is indicated to improve aesthetics or function. The presented case shows a patient diagnosed with Ascher's syndrome based on clinical findings such as double lip and blepharochalasis.

Simultaneous occurrence of erythema nodosum in monozygotic twin sisters.

Erythema nodosum (EN) is the most frequent clinicopathologic variant of panniculitis with painful red or violaceous nodules on the anterior … of monozygotic twin sisters after streptococcal pharyngitis. This paper might support the effect of heredity in the occurrence of erythema nodosum.

Conjunctival xerosis, arcus lipoides and Rieger's disease.

Three generations of a family with conjunctival xerosis, Rieger's anomaly (complete or incomplete) and arcus lipoides are described. The xerosis was found always to be accompanied by a Rieger anomaly, which had sometimes, but not always, been detected before. Independent heredity was not observed. In a number of cases the xerosis was bilateral and localised both temporally and nasally. The combination appears to be a stigma malformationis oculi. Correlation with a temporary vitamin A deficiency in early youth appears possible. At this age in such families caution is advisable in the administra…

[Clinical genealogical research on hysterical psychopathy].

Thirty probands with the diagnosis of hysterical psychopathy were studied using clinical and genealogic techniques. An analysis of the obtained data made with the help of modern geneticomathematical methods identified a significant correlation between the type of psychopathy in probands and the corresponding type of personality disorders in the first-kin relatives of the probands. The calculated rate of heredity in relation to the risk of hysterical pathology manifestation (in the framework of quasi-permanent multifactor model) (79.9%) suggests that the formation of hysterical psychopathy is t…

Genetic predisposition to febrile convulsions: a preliminary study.

The participation of genetic factors in the origin of convulsive disorders is a controversial matter. In an attempt to study the influence of heredity in a selected group of patients, we evaluated 128 subjects that presented febrile febrile convulsions. Of these, 18 (14,3% of the sample) had at least one relative affected by the same problem. Even though a more definite conclusion depends on sample enlargement and on setting up a control group, pedigree observation suggests the participation of an autosomal dominant gene, with incomplete and probably low penetrance, in the etiology of febrile …

Early BCG vaccination and development of atopy.

BACKGROUND: The increase in atopic diseases may be partly explicable by a decline of certain infectious diseases, or changes in childhood vaccination programmes, or both. We investigated whether BCG vaccination against tuberculosis influences the development of atopy. METHODS: We did a retrospective cohort study of 216 children with atopic heredity, born in Stockholm between 1989 and 1992, who received BCG vaccination when they were younger than 6 months, and 358 age-matched controls who had not been vaccinated. Both groups attended Sachs' Children's Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, during 1995-9…
