Risk factors associated with oral lesions in HIV-infected heterosexual people and intravenous drug users in Thailand.

This study aimed to identify factors associated with the presence of oral lesions in HIV-infected individuals in Thailand, to determine the influence of gender and route of HIV transmission on the prevalence of the lesions, and to investigate whether total lymphocyte cell counts can be used as a serologic marker to predict the occurrence of oral lesions. Two hundred and seventy-eight HIV-infected heterosexual persons and intravenous drug users (IVDUs) were enrolled (230 males, 48 females). Eighty-six HIV-free subjects from the same population were included as controls (61 males, 25 females). O

Viral load and heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1. Rakai Project Study Group.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: We examined the influence of viral load in relation to other risk factors for the heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). In a community-based study of 15,127 persons in a rural district of Uganda, we identified 415 couples in which one partner was HIV-1-positive and one was initially HIV-1-negative and followed them prospectively for up to 30 months. The incidence of HIV-1 infection per 100 person-years among the initially seronegative partners was examined in relation to behavioral and biologic variables. RESULTS: The male partner wa

HIV risk behaviours among male-to-female transgenders in comparison with homosexual or bisexual males and heterosexual females.

Issues and concerns among six directors, one counsellor and one consultant for transgender programmes in San Francisco are described. Additionally, 173 clients who were enrolled in programmes in eight AIDS service organizations were interviewed using a structured survey questionnaire. This study examined the relationships between HIV risk behaviours and social and cognitive factors among transgendered females (male-to-female transgenders) (n = 25) in comparison with homosexual or bisexual males (n = 122) and heterosexual females (n = 26). Transgendered females engaged in riskier behaviours tha

Hormonal contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, and risk of heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1.

To examine associations between method of contraception, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and incident human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, a prospective observational cohort study was done among female sex workers attending a municipal STD clinic in Mombasa, Kenya. Demographic and behavioral factors significantly associated with HIV-1 infection included type of workplace, condom use, and parity. In multivariate models, vulvitis, genital ulcer disease, vaginal discharge, and Candida vaginitis were significantly associated with HIV-1 seroconversion. Women who used depo me

Heterosexual gonorrhoea at St Thomas'--I: Patient characteristics and implications for targeted STD and HIV prevention strategies.

This paper compares the socio-demographic characteristics of patients with gonorrhoea with a control group of other attendees to an inner-London genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic. Between 16 May and 21 December 1994 inclusive there were 312 culture-confirmed heterosexually-acquired cases of Neisseria gonorrheae treated in our clinic: 192 (61.54%) men and 120 (38.46%) women. There were significant differences between the population of cases and controls. Both male (z = -5.36, P < 0.001) and female (z = -6.6, P < 0.001) cases were younger than controls. Cases were more likely to be black Afric

The epidemic dynamics of HIV-1 in Italy: modelling the interaction between intravenous drug users and heterosexual population.

Data gathered through the Latium HIV Surveillance System were used in conjunction with a compartmental mathematical model to describe the transmission dynamics of HIV-1 in Italy. In the Latium region, as in the rest of Italy, fewer than 1 in 5 cumulative cases of AIDS are attributable to male homosexual transmission, while 55-60 per cent of the cases have been observed among intravenous drug users (IVDUs). Moreover, the number of non-drug-using heterosexual cases is increasing (14 per cent of cumulative cases). Anonymous notification of positive HIV-1 tests, mandatory in Latium since 1985, wer

Pulsatile luteinizing hormone release and ovarian steroid levels in female-to-male transsexuals compared to heterosexual women.

It has been suggested that there is a difference in the interaction between sex steroids and gonadotropin secretion between transsexual and heterosexual women. In this study we tested whether there is a difference in the pulsatile release characteristics of luteinizing hormone (LH) and in ovarian steroid concentrations between 16 female-to-male (f-to-m) transsexuals and eight eugonadal heterosexual women during the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle. Blood samples for LH determination were collected every 10 min for 7 hr in the transsexual group, and every 10 min for 6 hr in the het

Kaposi's sarcoma with visceral involvement in a young heterosexual male without evidence of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

A case of disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in a 21-yr-old white heterosexual male with cryptogenic cirrhosis and no serological or immunological evidence of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is reported. The patient died 2 wk after diagnosis. Postmortem examination showed involvement of lymph nodes, liver, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, and bone marrow. This case demonstrates that Kaposi's sarcoma can occur in a young heterosexual male with normal immune function and in the absence of HIV infection.

REVISE Virtual Reality Intervention to Prevent Sexual Harassment in Heterosexual Couples: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: A series of studies suggests that immersive virtual reality (IVR) can enhance perspective-taking and behavioral change by simulating real-world scenarios experienced from different points of view. IVR has emerged as a promising tool for the prevention of gender-based violence, including sexual harassment. However, evidence on the effectiveness of first-person embodiment-based interventions in fostering empathy and modifying gender-related attitudes remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of REVISE (Realidad Virtual Inmersiva y Sexualidad), an IVR-based

From Bullying Victimization to Sexual Coercion Victimization: Do These Differ for Heterosexual and LGB Adolescents in the United States?

The current study proposes pathways from bullying victimization to sexual coercion victimization mediated by using drugs and engaging in sex with drugs. The study sample included heterosexual or LGB youth. Measures included bullying victimization, using drugs, engaging in sex with drugs, sexual coercion victimization, and the covariates, which are sex and age. Path analyses were conducted for heterosexual and LGB adolescents. Among heterosexuals, bullying victimization was positively associated with sexual coercion victimization. Using drugs and engaging in sex with drugs were also positively

Fractional modeling of hepatitis B virus transmission via heterosexual and homosexual contacts and its disability burden.

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major public health problem worldwide. Sexual intercourse, heterosexual and homosexual, is an important factor in HBV transmission in adults. This study develops a fractional-order mathematical model to describe the spread of HBV, using fractional calculus with a Mittag-Leffler kernel to account for memory effects and hereditary properties of biological systems. The adult population is divided into the groups of susceptible, infected, carrier, and recovered, on the basis of sex and sexual habits. The model incorporates HBV-related disability using gender-specif

Disparities in incident osteoarthritis between sexual minority and heterosexual adults: Findings from a large cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minorities, including lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals, experience persistent health disparities due to chronic exposure to minority stressors; however, its relation to osteoarthritis (OA) risk remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate the association between sexual orientation and OA risk and evaluate the mediating effect of health behaviors and psychosocial factors in related disparities. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 346,320 UK Biobank participants without OA at baseline (2006-2010), followed through December 2021. Coarsened exact matc

Sexual health and behaviors in homosexual, bisexual and heterosexual Danes: baseline findings in the Project SEXUS cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Population-based studies on the sexual health and behaviors of sexual minorities are scarce. AIM: To assess and compare sexual health and behaviors among homosexual, bisexual, and heterosexual Danes. METHODS: We analyzed questionnaire data from 59 838 participants age 15-89 in the Project SEXUS study, including 1577 homosexuals, 1500 bisexuals, and 56 761 heterosexuals. Sex-specific logistic regression analyses with heterosexuals as reference yielded demographically weighted, confounder-adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for measures of sexual health and behaviors. OUTCOMES: Study-spec

Extragenital chancre mimicking breast cancer and oropharyngeal secondary syphilis in a heterosexual couple: an unusual clinical pairing.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum It progresses through three clinical stages and shows various oral symptoms, mainly during the secondary stage. The disease can resemble other common oral mucosal conditions, such as infections with nonspecific pharyngitis, tonsillitis and laryngitis, as well as neoplastic and immune-mediated ulcers. This report discusses a heterosexual couple with rare manifestations of primary and secondary syphilis involving oropharyngeal lesions and an extragenital chancre, highlighting the diagnostic challenge and the importance of

Risk for experiencing psychological and sexual abuse on- and offline: a comparison of bisexual, gay/lesbian, and heterosexual women and men.

Dating abuse research on lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations tends to aggregate LGB participants for comparisons with heterosexuals and often excludes nonassaultive dating abuse and abuse that takes place on online dating applications. In the present study, we used the Pew Research Center's 2019 American Trends Panel Wave 56 data set (n = 4712) to compare ever experiencing several types of nonassaultive on- and offline dating abuse between bisexual women (n = 402), lesbian women (n = 207), heterosexual women (n = 1802), bisexual men (n = 225), gay men (n = 575), and heterosexual men (

Chronic epididymitis due to Chlamydia trachomatis LGV-L2 in an HIV-negative heterosexual patient: a case report.

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen and the leading bacterial cause of sexually transmitted infections worldwide. Chlamydia trachomatis genovars L1-L3 are responsible for lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), an invasive sexually transmitted disease endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, South America, the Caribbean, India and South East Asia. The typical signs and symptoms of C. trachomatis LGV urogenital infections in men include herpetiform ulcers, inguinal buboes, and/or lymphadenopathies. Since 2003, endemic cases of proctitis and proctocolitis caused by

Comprehensive Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening and Testing Interventions in a Predominantly Heterosexual Population with HIV at a Health Center.

In the United States, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have remained elevated for the fifth consecutive year from 2015 to 2019. There is a need to implement standardization of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention STI screening and testing recommendations. Higher STI incidence populations such as people with HIV, men who have sex with men, and adolescents and young adults, are frequently not screened and tested for bacterial STIs as recommended. Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) have the potential to deliver STI services for at-risk individuals as a routine component
