MRI Is Better Than CT Scan for Detection of Structural Pathologies After Traumatic Posterior Hip Dislocations in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic posterior hip dislocations in children and adolescents requires emergent closed reduction. Postreduction imaging is necessary to assess the concentricity of reduction and structural injuries to the hip. There is no a consensus for which imaging is a modality of choice in such condition. The purposes of this study are to describe magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of traumatic posterior hip dislocations and to compare the effectiveness of MRI with computerized tomography (CT) in detecting structural abnormalities of the hip that impact patient management. Hip arthroscopy: current indications, treatment options, and management issues.

The management of hip injuries in athletes has evolved significantly in the past few years with the advancement of arthroscopic techniques. The application of minimally invasive surgical techniques has facilitated relatively rapid returns to sporting activity in both recreational and elite athletes. Recent advancements in both hip arthroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging have elucidated several sources of intraarticular abnormalities that result in chronic and disabling hip symptoms. Many of these conditions were previously unrecognized and, thus, left untreated. Current indications for hip …

Traumatic hip dislocation in the paediatric population: A case series from a specialist centre.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic hip dislocation is a rare injury in the paediatric population. It can occur after high energy trauma, but also after lower energy injuries especially in younger children. Posterior dislocation is the most common pattern of hip dislocation. In most cases, closed reduction is successful, but occasionally open reduction is required to achieve concentric reduction. The aim of our study was to present the 10-year experience from a Level-1 Trauma Paediatric Hospital and to comment on how our experience correlates with the current literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a r

Intra-articular hip disorders in the military population: evaluation and management.

The physical demands of the military expose the hip to extreme forces and stresses and generate a high incidence of hip disorders within this population. Fundamental to the pathophysiology of hip injuries is the underlying anatomy of the joint because problematic femoroacetabular mechanics predispose to injury. FAI is increasingly recognized as the underlying cause of hip disorders and should be considered when assessing a patient with hip complaints. Young, male patients are at increased risk of FAI, especially cam impingement, and high levels of athletic activity during skeletal growth may c…

Imaging lesions of the lateral hip.

The lateral aspect of the hip is composed of a complex array of osseous and soft tissue structures. Both common and uncommon clinical entities are encountered in the lateral hip. This article briefly introduces fundamental imaging anatomy and the functional roles of different osseous and soft tissue structures in the lateral aspect of the hip, followed by a discussion of relevant imaging findings of lateral hip pathology. Greater trochanteric pain syndrome is frequently encountered in patients with lateral hip pain and encompasses a spectrum of soft tissue abnormalities including trochanteric

It was not a hip fracture - you were lucky this time - or perhaps not! A prospective study of clinical outcomes in patients with low-energy pelvic fractures and hip contusions.

INTRODUCTION: Prehospital and hospital emergency care guidelines have been developed for patients with suspected hip fracture. Initial radiography can identify a number of patients with other injuries, generally pelvic fractures and hip contusions. Little is known about the prognosis for these patients. The aim of this study is twofold: i) to investigate the injury pattern of patients assessed in prehospital emergency care as suffering from a suspected hip fracture and ii) to compare clinical outcomes between patients with verified hip fracture (HF) and those with other hip injuries (OHI). ME…

[Ipsilateral knee and hip joint dislocation].

Knee and hip dislocations are often serious injuries with an uncertain outcome. Simultaneous ipsilateral dislocation of the knee and hip joints is very rare; consequently, there is an inadequate amount of literature on the subject. In this case report we present a 35-year-old male patient with this combination of both injuries and discuss it in comparison with the available literature. This case report shows, that a methodical and sequential treatment can lead to good results in spite of this complex combination of injuries.

Vascular complications in floating hip.

The so-called floating hip involves a pelvis or an acetabular fracture together with an ipsilateral femur bone fracture. Concurrent injuries are also common in these cases, with the evolution and outcome worse than expected when these fractures exist in isolation. We studied a series of 11 patients with floating hip lesions. They all presented within a general polytrauma diagnosis. Diaphyseal femur fracture together with ipsilateral acetabular fracture was the most common combination. Supracondylar fracture occurred in 3 cases; these patients also had a popliteal vascular injury, and underwent

Clinical treatment of traumatic hip dislocation in children: a single-centre retrospective study.

This study aimed to analyse the treatment and outcomes of traumatic hip dislocation (THD) in children. Clinical data of children with THD were collected at our clinical centre from 1 June 2012 to 1 January 2023. Demographic data, injury mechanism, type of dislocation, combined injuries, reduction time, reduction method, and radiographs were analysed. The Merle d'Aubigné-Postel hip score was used to evaluate hip function and complications at the final follow-up. A total of 19 children with THD were enrolled, including 12 male and seven female patients, with an average age of 8.28 ± 0.99 years.

Concomitant ipsilateral acetabular and femoral fractures - an appraisal of outcomes and complications in 34 patients.

Concomitant ipsilateral femoral and acetabular fractures are complex injuries which result from high-velocity trauma. Surgical treatment is the accepted management of such injuries. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the outcomes and study the complications in patients treated for concomitant ipsilateral acetabular and femoral fractures (type 'B' floating hip injuries). This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital on patients operated for type B floating hip injuries, who had completed a minimum of one-year follow-up after the surgery and whose complet…

Iliopsoas musculotendinous unit.

Hip pain is a common condition with many etiologies, and the workup often includes imaging. The iliopsoas musculotendinous unit is becoming more frequently recognized as the culprit for hip pain, partially due to the increase in athletic activity in the general population as well as to the increased demand in professional sports. Iliopsoas tendon injuries are also seen in the elderly population and documented as occurring following total hip replacement. Iliopsoas diseases, often overlooked as a cause of hip pain, include tendinosis, snapping tendon, bursitis, tears, and avulsion injuries. Thi

Preseason strength and flexibility imbalances associated with athletic injuries in female collegiate athletes.

One hundred thirty-eight female collegiate athletes, participating in eight weightbearing varsity sports, were administered preseason strength and flexibility tests and followed for injuries during their sports seasons. Strength was measured as the maximal isokinetic torque of the right and left knee flexors and knee extensors at 30 and 180 deg/sec. Flexibility was measured as the active range of motion of several lower body joints. An athletic trainer evaluated and recorded injuries occurring to the athletes in practice or competition. Forty percent of the women suffered one or more injuries.

The Relation between Hamstring Strain Injury and Physical Characteristics of Japanese Collegiate Sepak Takraw Players.

The aim of this study was to investigate the injuries in Japanese collegiate sepak takraw players. We primarily focused on hamstring strain injury (HSI), and investigated the associated physical characteristics. The study included 77 Japanese collegiate sepak takraw players who were interviewed; data were collected regarding injuries sustained by them during the game within the past year. The hip range of motion (ROM) was measured. The total number of injuries was 48 in a year. The rate of HSI was the highest (31.3%) among all the injuries. All HSIs occurred in the dominant leg because of the

Pediatric pelvic fractures.

Pediatric pelvic fractures account for only 1% to 2% of fractures seen by orthopaedic surgeons who treat children. They are typically associated with high-energy trauma, requiring a comprehensive workup for concomitant life-threatening injuries. Anteroposterior radiographs and rapid-sequence computed tomography are the standards of diagnostic testing to identify the fracture and recognize associated injuries. Treatment is individualized based on patient age, fracture classification, stability of the pelvic ring, extent of concomitant injuries, and hemodynamic stability of the patient. Most pel

Identifying characteristics and outcomes that are associated with fall-related fatalities: multi-year retrospective summary of fall deaths in older adults from 2005-2012.

BACKGROUND: Fall-related deaths continue to be the leading cause of accidental deaths in the older adult (65+ year) population. However, many fall-related fatalities are unspecified and little is known about the fall characteristics and personal demographics at the time of the fall. Therefore, this report describes the characteristics, circumstances and injuries of falls that resulted in older adult deaths in one U.S. County and explores the variables associated with fatal injuries from falls. METHODS: This is a continued retrospective analysis of 841older adults whose underlying cause of dea
