"Childrens are not just "little adults". The rate of medication related problems and its predictors among patients admitted to pediatric ward of southwestern Ethiopian hospital: A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: The rate of medication related problems is high in developing countries due to the complexity of pediatrics medication management. Pediatric population should have their own dosage regimens. The pediatric dosage regimens were derived from the adult dose that might lead to sudden reach of sub or supra-therapeutic doses. As the result, the medication therapy management is difficult in this populations. Despite this, a scanty of studies were conducted on medication related problems among pediatric populations. Therefore, this study examined the prevalence and risk factors for the occu

A regimen based on the combination of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole with caspofungin and corticosteroids as a first-line therapy for patients with severe non-HIV-related pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia: a retrospective study in a tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is a life-threatening and severe disease in immunocompromised hosts. A synergistic regimen based on the combination of sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SMX-TMP) with caspofungin and glucocorticosteroids (GCSs) may be a potential first-line therapy for PJP. Therefore, it is important to explore the efficacy and safety of this synergistic therapy for treating non-HIV-related PJP patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the data of 38 patients with non-HIV-related PJP at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. Patients we

In-hospital complication-related risk factors for discharge and 90-day outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage after surgical clipping and endovascular coiling: a propensity score-matched analysis.

OBJECTIVE: More than 10 years have passed since the two best-known clinical trials of ruptured aneurysms (International Subarachnoid Aneurysm Trial [ISAT] and Barrow Ruptured Aneurysm Trial [BRAT]) indicated that endovascular coiling (EC) was superior to surgical clipping (SC). However, in recent years, the development of surgical techniques has greatly improved; thus, it is necessary to reanalyze the impact of the differences in treatment modalities on the prognosis of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed all aSAH patients adm

Fluid overload in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock treated with early goal-directed therapy is associated with increased acute need for fluid-related medical interventions and hospital death.

Early goal-directed therapy (EGDT) consists of early, aggressive fluid resuscitation and is known to improve survival in sepsis. It is unknown how often EGDT leads to subsequent fluid overload and whether post-EGDT fluid overload affects patients' outcomes. Our hypothesis was that patients with sepsis treated with EGDT were at risk for fluid overload and that fluid overload would be associated with adverse outcomes. We conducted a retrospective cohort of 405 consecutive patients admitted with severe sepsis and septic shock to the medical intensive care unit of a tertiary care academic hospital

Plasma-activated water as a wound rinse solution in patients with diabetes-related foot ulcers in two Australian hospitals: study protocol for a phase I double-blinded, randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Patients living with diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFU) often have non-healing wounds that, despite ongoing clinical management and wound debridement as standard of care, can proceed to infection and lower limb amputation. Additionally, treatment guidelines do not recommend most topical antibiotics or antiseptic treatments, limiting complements to surgical wound debridement. We present a protocol for a phase I randomised controlled trial testing the safety and efficacy of plasma-activated water as an antiseptic for preventing infection and promoting ulcer healing. METHODS AND AN

Influenza vaccination coverage and factors associated with severe laboratory-confirmed influenza-related illness in patients receiving care at a tertiary hospital in Catalonia (Spain) during the 2018-2019 epidemic season.

INTRODUCTION: Influenza vaccination rates in risk groups remain suboptimal. Evidence supporting a significant association between influenza vaccination and severe illness is limited. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of out- and inpatients with laboratory-confirmed influenza infection attended during the 2018-19 epidemic season. Influenza vaccination coverage by indication was analyzed. Logistic regression was used to compare the odds of vaccination between severe and non-severe influenza-positive patients. Severe cases were defined as presenting pneumon
