Geographic Differences in Reaching Selected National HIV Strategic Targets Among People With Diagnosed HIV: 16 US States and Puerto Rico, 2017-2020.

Objectives. To assess geographic differences in reaching national targets for viral suppression, homelessness, and HIV-related stigma among … antiretroviral therapy dose adherence were lowest, and certain social determinants of health (i.e., housing instability, HIV-related stigma, and HIV health care discrimination) were highest in Midwestern states. Conclusions. Jurisdictions have room for improvement in reaching the national 2025 targets for ending the HIV epidemic and in addressing other measures assoc …

Embedding social determinants in mHealth for pediatric oncology: co-designing a patient-centred tool for febrile neutropenia in resource-limited settings.

BACKGROUND: Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a potentially life-threatening complication of chemotherapy in pediatric oncology. In resource-limited settings, timely care is often hampered by structural and social barriers. Broader social determinants of health (SDoH)—including food insecurity, housing instability, limited transport, digital exclusion, and caregiver mental health conditions—undermine caregivers’ capacity to respond to FN episodes effectively. METHODS: This study aimed to identify and operationalize key SDoH influencing FN management and integrate them into the co-design of the Salud…

Morphological Similarities of Chronic Ankle Instability and Cavus Foot Type Using Statistical Shape Modeling.

Chronic ankle instability (CAI) can develop in up to 40% of patients after a first-time ankle sprain. Advanced imaging and statistical shape modeling (SSM) provide the opportunity to evaluate if subtle differences in foot and ankle morphology, such as hindfoot alignment or cavus features, may contribute to structural predispositions for recurrent instability. In this study, a 14-bone SSM was created from weight-bearing CT data (n = 80) from patients with CAI (n = 23), cavus foot type (n = 29), and rectus (n = 28) foot type. Scans for the CAI group were from pre-operative imaging of patients un

Residential trajectory and HIV high-risk behaviors among Montréal street youth--a reciprocal relationship.

Evidence has linked residential instability and engagement in high-risk behaviors. This paper longitudinally examines the relationship between changes in residential stability and changes in HIV risk behaviors among Montréal street youth (SY). Between April 2006 and May 2007, 419 SY (18-25 years old) were recruited in a cohort study. SY (using Montréal street youth agencies services) were eligible if they had had at least one 24-hour episode of homelessness in the previous 30 days. Baseline and follow-up interviews, carried out every 3 months, included completion of a questionnaire (based on L

A new algorithm for the initial evaluation and management of supraventricular tachycardia.

Interpretations by physicians and those generated by electrocardiograph computer softwares have poor ability to recognize different types of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). Therefore, we developed and tested a new SVT algorithm based on easily identifiable morphological characteristics and a simple dichotomous yes/no format regarding initial electrocardiographic manifestation and response pattern. The algorithm was then tested by medical house staff during the initial evaluation of 50 adult ED and cardiac intensive care unit patients suspected of having SVT. For a wide representation of SV

A tiger mouse and relatives. Variants caused by an activated transposable element?

In a laboratory-bred population of wild Peruvian house mice, one male had an excessive rate of non-pairing of the X and Y chromosomes. After crossing him with laboratory stock mice, a mouse of very unusual phenotype appeared from a yellow (AyA) mother. He was yellow with black dorsal stripes; hence Tiger. He was mated to many females, and inbred F2 and F3 generations were raised. There were no more tiger phenotypes, but his F1 contained an excess of black-and-tans over yellows, showing him to be a gonosomic mosaic Ayat/atat; the homozygous cell line probably arose from the heterozygous one. The Role of Social Determinants of Health in Shaping Racial and Disability Disparities Among Older Adults in the United States.

Despite extensive research on social determinants of health, gaps remain in understanding how race and disability intersect to shape health disparities among older adults. This essay examines how structural inequities, including limited access to healthcare, inadequate housing, and economic instability, contribute to poorer health outcomes for racialized older adults with disabilities. Early-life disadvantages, such as growing up in underserved neighborhoods and experiencing systemic discrimination, accumulate over the life course, increasing the risk of chronic health conditions and financial

Ending the HIV epidemic for all, not just some: structural racism as a fundamental but overlooked social-structural determinant of the US HIV epidemic.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review the recent theoretical and empirical literature on structural racism, social determinants of health frameworks within the context of HIV prevention and treatment, and criticism of the national responses to the US epidemic. RECENT FINDINGS: In line with growing mainstream attention to the role of structural racism and health inequities, recent editorials and studies cite ending structural racism as an essential step to ending the US HIV epidemic. Recent studies demonstrate that barriers rooted in structural racism such as incarceration, housing instability, police …

Addressing Intersecting Social and Mental Health Needs Among Transition-Age Homeless Youths: A Review of the Literature.

Homelessness among youths is a poorly understood and complex social phenomenon. The authors examined the risk factors for homelessness among transition-age young adults, including the unique mental health concerns that often perpetuate the cycle of poverty and housing instability among these youths. The authors discuss the treatment gaps for mental health conditions in this population and identify potential solutions for reducing existing barriers to care. A literature review revealed that many studies report high rates of trauma and subsequent mental health problems among homeless youths. Int…

Childhood risk factors for homelessness among homeless adults.

OBJECTIVES: This effort used data from the Course of Homelessness study and comparative secondary data on the general population to identify negative childhood and family background experiences that may increase risk for adult homelessness. METHODS: Frequencies of negative childhood experiences were examined among a probability sample of 1563 homeless adults. Differences in risk for such experiences were calculated by sex, age cohort, and racial/ethnicity status. Where possible, rates of negative childhood experiences among the homeless were compared with the general population. RESULTS: Sub

Mothers of malnourished children were more likely to be pregnant, and had poorer housing, sanitation and water supply, a lower income and food expenditure and less education than controls.
