Perioperative and Oncological Outcomes of Combined Hepatectomy with Complete Cytoreduction and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Metastatic Colorectal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Synchronous peritoneal and liver metastasis in colorectal cancer is a relative contraindication for curative surgery. We aimed to evaluate the safety and oncological outcomes of combined treatment of peritoneal and liver metastasis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of metastatic colorectal cancer patients from two prospective databases: peritoneal surface malignancy (n = 536) and hepatobiliary (n = 286). We compared 60 patients treated with cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and hepatectomy; 80 patients treated with cytoreduction and …

Feasibility of diaphragmatic interventions in cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal carcinomatosis: A 20-year experience.

INTRODUCTION: Complete cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy is an effective treatment for improving prognosis of selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. The addiction of diaphragmatic procedures may increase the incidence of postoperative respiratory complications. Our goal was to evaluate the early postoperative results following diaphragmatic surgery. METHODS: Prospectively collected data of patients undergoing diaphragmatic surgery between January 2000 and January 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Chest drains were routinely placed in all cases. …

Histiocytic sarcoma in a child-successful management and long-term survival with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.

Histiocytic sarcoma is an extremely rare tumor in children. It may occur sporadically or in association with other hematological malignancies. It arises most commonly in the lymph nodes but may occur anywhere in the body and clinical presentation is usually with advanced disease. Following tissue diagnosis and staging, management is with chemotherapy though there are no standard regimes. Surgery has been used successfully for local control. This is the first description of the use of peritonectomy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy to treat histiocytic sarcoma. The 4-year-old patien…

Outcomes of Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Peritoneal Mesothelioma: Experience of a Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Center.

Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (DMPM) is an uncommon malignancy, which can be difficult to treat. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) have evolved as the treatment of choice when complete cytoreduction is to be achieved. This study reports the outcomes of CRS/HIPEC for peritoneal mesothelioma performed in a center for peritoneal surface malignancy. A retrospective analysis of a prospective database of 389 CRS/HIPEC procedures identified 23 patients who underwent CRS/HIPEC for DMPM from 1999 to 2014. Gender, age at diagnosis, age at surge…

Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy: an emerging treatment option for advanced goblet cell tumors of the appendix.

BACKGROUND: The debate remains whether appendiceal goblet cell cancers behave as classical carcinoid or adenocarcinoma. Treatment options are unclear and reports of outcomes are scarce. Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS+HIPEC) is considered optimal treatment for peritoneal involvement of other epithelial appendiceal tumors. METHODS: Prospective cohorts of patients treated for advanced appendiceal tumors from three peritoneal malignancy centres were collected (1994-2011). All patients underwent complete CRS+HIPEC, when possible, or tumor debulking. Demogr…

Long-term survival after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for appendiceal neoplasms: A Brazilian cancer center experience.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal neoplasms represent less than 1% of all gastrointestinal cancers. Epithelial mucinous neoplasms of the appendix are classified as low grade, high grade, or adenocarcinoma. Pseudomyxoma peritonei, the peritoneal dissemination of these tumors, is a common clinical presentation. The management of peritoneal carcinomatosis is complex and involves cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, a modality associated with significant surgical morbidity and resource demands. Nevertheless, cytoreductive surgery plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal ch…
