Formal responsibility and task execution: the importance of modelling task delegation in FRAM to optimise the identification of potential improvement strategies.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how task delegation for perioperative anticoagulation management is reported in protocols and daily practice, and how this translates to additional information in work-as-imagined and work-as-done using FRAM to identify improvement possibilities. METHODS: Existing FRAM visualisations of perioperative anticoagulant management in a Dutch academic hospital were extended to include task delegation in protocols using document analysis and in daily practice using a focus group of eight healthcare professionals, analysed using content analysis. RESULTS: Distinguishing betw

Impaired action self-monitoring in schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that the process of discriminating between inner and outer experiences underlies auditory hallucinations (AHs). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether discrimination between imagined and performed action (i.e., action self monitoring) differed between schizophrenia patients with auditory hallucinations (AHs) and those without. METHOD: Twenty-eight schizophrenia patients with AHs, twenty-six patients without AHs, and thirty-four healthy subjects were assessed with an action memory task. Simple actions were presented to the participant verbally

A link between impaired purine nucleotide synthesis and apoptosis in Drosophila melanogaster.

The biosynthetic pathways and multiple functions of purine nucleotides are well known. However, the pathways that respond to alterations in purine nucleotide synthesis in vivo in an animal model organism have not been identified. We examined the effects of inhibiting purine de novo synthesis in vivo and in cultured cells of Drosophila melanogaster. The purine de novo synthesis gene ade2 encodes phosphoribosylformylglycinamidine synthase (EC 6.3.5.3). An ade2 deletion, generated by P-element transposon excision, causes lethality in early pupal development, with darkening, or necrosis, of leg an

Confronting environmental sickness: disease metaphors in ecological art.

This article turns to a particular mode of analogy: the deployment of medical metaphors in feminist ecological art. It foregrounds ecofeminist artworks produced from the late twentieth century onwards to demonstrate how women artists were among the first to visualise the entanglements of human and environmental health, anticipating concerns that now occupy a central place in contemporary artistic and cultural discourse. Through metaphorical representations of environmental disease, these works interrogate entrenched cultural assumptions about medicine, care, vulnerability and the imagined boun

The nature of imagery processes underlying food cravings.

OBJECTIVE: The study used a working memory approach to examine the nature of the imagery processes underlying food cravings. DESIGN AND METHOD: A sample of 60 dieters and 60 non-dieters were asked to imagine either a food induction or a holiday induction scenario. Participants then performed 18 trials of either a visual imagery task (loading the visuo-spatial sketch pad) or auditory imagery task (loading the phonological loop). Food craving was measured before and after the induction scenario, and then after every 6 trials of the imagery task. RESULTS: Craving intensity increased following i

The diving bell meets the butterfly: identity lost and re-membered.

Jean Dominique Bauby, former editor of Elle, suffered a stroke to his brain stem that left him with locked-in syndrome. Subsequently, through blinking his left eye, he writes his memoir of this experience, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. This paper explores the meaning of embodiment, especially as one's body bears upon one's personal identity. It explores the various challenges and threats to selfhood that result from Bauby's experience and recounts how Bauby rises to the challenge through his memory and imagination.

Problems associated with restorative dentistry.

Veterinary dental restorative problems, although not as involved as those in human dentistry, can be very technique sensitive and difficult to resolve. The resolution of particular problems usually depends on the choice and imagination or inventiveness of the operator. Restorative problems are usually those of a mechanical or iatrogenic nature rather than medical or pathologic. The restoration of the coronal aspect of endodontically treated teeth, teeth with carious lesions, coronal defects, and missing teeth constitute the bulk of restorative problems.

Ectopia lentis surgery in Marfan's syndrome: from "couching" to the use of intracapsular tension rings.

In the course of time, correction of the ectopia lentis in Marfan's syndrome has been approached through quite many surgical techniques. They addressed the iris, or the lens and aimed at increasing the aphakic zone, the opacification or removal of the lens. Although associated to many complications, the first techniques proved the courage and imagination of pioneer surgeons and are worth mentioning. They were steps towards the invention of current techniques and devices that make surgery of ectopia lentis safe, easy, and having a favorable prognosis.

Rapid hypnosis as an anaesthesia adjunct for evacuation of postpartum vulval haematoma.

Hypnosis can be a useful therapeutic adjunct to pharmacological analgesia or anaesthesia in obstetrics. However, it is rarely considered a primary anaesthetic technique and is seldom employed in the acute surgical setting. Few obstetricians and anaesthetists currently utilise this technique in their clinical practice. We present a case report of a 34-year-old woman who successfully underwent evacuation of a large vulval haematoma using the simple hypnosis technique of 'believed-in imagination' as the principal anaesthetic technique with only minimal adjunctive pharmacological analgesia.

Continuous synthesis of artificial speech sounds from human cortical surface recordings during silent speech production.

Objective. Brain-computer interfaces can restore various forms of communication in paralyzed patients who have lost their ability to articulate intelligible speech. This study aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of closed-loop synthesis of artificial speech sounds from human cortical surface recordings during silent speech production.Approach. Ten participants with intractable epilepsy were temporarily implanted with intracranial electrode arrays over cortical surfaces. A decoding model that predicted audible outputs directly from patient-specific neural feature inputs was trained during over

Rumination and future thinking in depression.

OBJECTIVES: Future thinking is an important domain of cognitive functioning, with reduced ability to imagine positive future events associated with hopelessness in depression and parasuicide. Rumination has been shown to exacerbate negative cognitive biases in depression, and to reduce likelihood estimations for positive future events. We examine the hypothesis that, in depressed patients, rumination would reduce the ability to imagine positive future events, whilst increasing the ability to imagine negative future events. METHOD: The ability to imagine positive and negative future events was

Exploring cultural imaginaries of robots with children with brittle bone disease: a participatory design study.

A symbiotic relationship exists between narrative imaginaries of and real-life advancements in technology. Such cultural imaginings have a powerful influence on our understanding of the potential that technology has to affect our lives; as a result, narrative-based approaches to participatory design (PD) of technology are an active area of investigation. In this ongoing study, the following research questions are addressed: how can PD be optimised for the fields of robotics and assistive technology, particularly with regard to fostering empowerment and eliciting how people imagine the role of t

Changes in prefrontal cortical activation during motor imagery of precision gait with age and task difficulty.

Previous studies have shown that imagined walking ability decreases with age in a similar manner as actual walking ability; however, little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying this aging effect. The present study investigates this issue, focusing on the effect of task difficulty and the involvement of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Twenty healthy right-handed older adults (mean age 74.5 ± 3.3 years) participated in two experiments. In Experiment 1, the time participants took for actual and imagined walking along a 5-m walkway of three different path widths (15, 25, and 50 cm) were co

Negative mental imagery in public speaking anxiety: Forming cognitive resistance by taxing visuospatial working memory.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study sought to reconcile two lines of research. Previous studies have identified a prevalent and causal role of negative imagery in social phobia and public speaking anxiety; others have demonstrated that lateral eye movements during visualisation of imagery reduce its vividness, most likely by loading the visuospatial sketchpad of working memory. It was hypothesised that using eye movements to reduce the intensity of negative imagery associated with public speaking may reduce anxiety resulting from imagining a public speaking scenario compared to an auditory c

Assessment of motor imagery in cerebral palsy via mental chronometry: the case of walking.

Recent studies show varying results on whether motor imagery capacity is compromised in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). Motor imagery studies in children predominantly used the implicit hand laterality task. In this task participants judge the laterality of displayed hand stimuli. A more explicit way of studying motor imagery is mental chronometry. This paradigm is based on the comparison between the movement durations of actually performing a task and imagining the same task. The current study explored motor imagery capacity in CP by means of mental chronometry of a whole body task. Mov

Overgeneralized autobiographical memory and future thinking in combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that individuals with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) tend to recall autobiographical memories with decreased episodic specificity. A growing body of research has demonstrated that the mechanisms involved in recalling autobiographical memories overlap considerably with those involved in imagining the future. Although shared autobiographical deficits in remembering the past and imagining the future have been observed in other clinical populations, this has yet to be examined in PTSD. This study examined whether, compared to combat trauma-exposed individuals without

Neurophysiological profiling of emotional and cognitive states in healthy individuals.

Emotions play a fundamental role in shaping human cognition and behavior, profoundly affecting the way we perceive, evaluate, and respond to our environment. Although extensive research has examined how the brain processes visual emotional stimuli, less is known about neural mechanisms related to emotional imagination and the processing of varying emotional and cognitive states. This study aims to address this gap by looking into brain activity using Electroencephalography (EEG) in response to emotional auditory inputs. Thirty-one healthy participants listened to neutral, positive, negative, a…
