[Vaccination with virus-like particles containing hemagglutinin protects the lungs of mice with postifluenza bacterial pneumonia: virological, microbiological and clinical data].

INTRODUCTION: Influenza is a severe viral disease, a frequent complication of which is a secondary bacterial pneumonia. Influenza vaccines prevent secondary bacterial complications. Virus-like particles are one of the promising areas for the development of new vaccines. The aim of this work is to study the correlation of the pathomorphological characteristics of the lungs with clinical, virological, and microbiological markers of the disease at vaccination with virus-like particles (VLPs), containing hemagglutinin (HA) of influenza virus (HA-Gag-VLPs) in a murine model of secondary bacterial p

Sociodemographic and geographic determinants of childhood immunization coverage and equity in Ghana: Analysis of the 2022 demographic and health survey.

BACKGROUND: Childhood immunization remains a cornerstone of public health in sub-Saharan Africa, yet substantial gaps in coverage, equity, and schedule adherence persist. This study examines immunization coverage, sociodemographic disparities, predictors of completion, and policy implementation effectiveness in Ghana using nationally representative data. METHODS: Data from 3,788 children aged 12-35 months in the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey were analysed using stratified two-stage cluster sampling across 614 enumeration areas. Weighted coverage estimates were calculated for indivi

Immunization Mandates, Vaccination Coverage, and Exemption Rates in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination coverage among children entering kindergarten in the United States is high, but interstate variations exist. The relationship between state immunization laws and vaccination coverage has not been fully assessed. We evaluated associations of state laws on both measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) and diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTaP) vaccination coverage and exemptions to school immunization requirements. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, longitudinal analysis of the effect of state immunization laws on vaccination coverage and exemptions among US kindergarten

Whole-Cell and Acellular Pertussis Vaccine: Reflections on Efficacy.

Pertussis is a common respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. Although most cases occur in developing countries, it is considered endemic globally. The World Health Organization estimates there are 20-40 million cases of pertussis annually. Pertussis vaccines played a pivotal role in reducing the burden of pertussis disease as well as infant morbidity and mortality. Although the two forms of pertussis vaccine are effective, each has its advantages and drawbacks. This review aims to review the current knowledge on pertussis vaccines, emphasizing vaccine effectiveness

[Reactions to tick-borne encephalitis vaccination (authors transl)].

No serious side effects with resultant permanent disability were encountered amongst 1457 patients receiving tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) vaccination. However, generalized and local reactions occurred in a high percentage of cases following the first vaccination. Fever, headache and vomiting were frequently encountered together. Over 50% of the children under 10 reacted with pyrexia of varying degree up to 39 degrees C, but the temperature seldom exceeded this mark. These reactions began immediately (usually in the night) after the vaccination and generally disappeared after one to two days (

Barriers to childhood immunization in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Immunization to prevent infectious diseases is a core strategy to improve childhood health as well as survival. It remains a challenge for some African countries to attain the required childhood immunization coverage. We aim at identifying individual barriers confronting parents/caretakers, providers, and health systems that hinder childhood immunization coverage in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHOD: This systematic review searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science and EMBASE. We restricted to published articles in English that focused on childhood immunization barriers in sub-Saharan Afric

What is the best way to use conjugate vaccines?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review discusses recent advances, challenges and opportunities for the best use of conjugate vaccines now and in the future. RECENT FINDINGS: Direct protection in young children may be short-lived and programme effectiveness may depend heavily on indirect protection (herd immunity). Pneumococcal carriage serotype replacement has been widely reported following vaccine implementation. Use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines is being trialled in the elderly. Vaccination in west Africa against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A (Men A), a new monovalent conjugate vac

Modelling the health and economic impacts ofM72/AS01E vaccination and BCG-revaccination: Estimates for South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis remains a major public health problem in South Africa, with an estimated 300,000 cases and 55,000 deaths in 2021. New tuberculosis vaccines could play an important role in reducing this burden. Phase IIb trials have suggested efficacy of the M72/AS01E vaccine candidate and BCG-revaccination. The potential population impact of these vaccines is unknown. METHODS: We used an age-stratified transmission model of tuberculosis, calibrated to epidemiological data from South Africa, to estimate the potential health and economic impact of M72/AS01E vaccination and BCG-revaccin

The safety of BCG revaccination: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Revaccination with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is not generally recommended due to a lack of proven efficacy of repeat doses for protection against tuberculosis. However, there is a growing interest in the use of BCG vaccine for its 'off-target' effects which might involve revaccination. We did a systematic review of the safety of BCG revaccination. METHODS: MEDLINE (1946 to March 2020) and the BCG World Atlas (updated 2017) were searched, limiting to studies of BCG administration by the intradermal or percutaneous route. Adverse events as well as patient and vaccine

Cutaneous necrotic ulceration due to BCG re-vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) often cause rapid decline in renal and cardiac function. In patients with ACS, combined renal dysfunction is associated with increased overall mortality and cardiovascular events. Physical activity (PA) management may crucially contribute towards protection of renal function in patients with ACS. This article describes the study protocol of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) assessing whether online support for PA management using wearable devices and information communication technology for patients with ACS facing difficulties in participating in o

Delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction to anthrax vaccine.

The Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program is a Department of Defense initiative to protect military personnel against the threat of anthrax. Surveillance for adverse events associated with anthrax vaccination has shown that mild local reactions are not uncommon while systemic reactions are extremely rare. We present a case of 26-year-old male with delayed-type hypersensitivity after two doses of anthrax vaccine.
