Bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency in Danish Holstein-Friesian cattle. II. Patho-anatomical description of affected calves.

The patho-anatomical findings in 3 Danish Holstein-Friesian calves affected with bovine leukocyte adhesion deficiency (BLAD) are described. The diagnosis was confirmed by genotyping for the BLAD mutagene by polymerase chain reaction technique. The main clinical symptoms were general unthriftyness and leukocytosis with a high proportion of neutrophils. None of the calves suffered from severe infections and the major pathological changes were different from those described in previously published cases. One calf had a fibro-granulomatous perilienitis and calcification of splenic stroma and pulmo

Overview of infectious diseases and other nonmalignant conditions in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Treatment of an AIDS patient with opportunistic infections is clearly complicated by the immunological and nutritional deficiencies associated with the syndrome. Clinical control of some individual infections may be achieved with traditional or investigational measures, but relapse or appearance of another serious infection may be expected within months in most patients. While progress has been made in the treatment of infections such as those discussed in this paper and elsewhere in this symposium, 'successful' treatment of an opportunistic infection in a patient with AIDS is comparable to ac

[Hyper-IgE recurrent infection syndrome: pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapeutic management].

Hyper-IgE recurrent infection syndrome is an uncommon primary immunodeficiency characterized by high serum levels of total IgE, eczema-like dermatitis, recurrent skin abscesses and staphylococci pneumonias, which can produce abscesses with mild inflammatory signs. It also causes dental, musculoskeletal and connective tissue abnormalities. The classical (type 1) variation is caused by autosomal-dominant mutations in signal transducer and activator of transcription 3. An incomplete form (type 2) has been described with only the immunological manifestations, but without the mesenchymal manifestat

[Primary humoral immunodeficiencies associated with enteropathies: An update].

Inflammatory enteropathies are frequent in primary immune deficiencies (PID) (up to 21%). Their pathophysiology is complex and combines immune abnormalities (loss of tolerance, deficit in mucosal IgA secretion and altered infectious response) with an abnormal environment (dysbiosis, production of pro-inflammatory endotoxins, epigenetic and epitranscriptomic alterations). This leads to a deregulated inflammatory state of the gastrointestinal tract and thus to enteropathy. These conditions are heterogeneous and manifest not only as an inflammatory bowel disease but also as in lymphocytic, autoim

Inborn Errors of Immunity and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation: Recognition and Pretransplant Management.

Primary immunodeficiencies, now more broadly termed as "inborn errors of immunity (IEI)," are rare genetic disorders associated with recurrent infections, immune dysregulation, autoimmunity, lymphoproliferation, and malignancy risk. Early recognition and diagnosis are essential to reduce infection-related morbidity, prevent organ damage, and identify children who may benefit from curative therapy. A comprehensive history, physical examination, targeted immune evaluation, and genetic testing can support diagnosis, while early supportive measures may reduce infection risk before definitive thera

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of the 6 Warning Signs of the European Society for Immunodeficiencies for Primary Immunodeficiencies in Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic delay in cases of primary immunodeficiency (PID) is a significant problem for clinicians, and most do not have sufficient awareness of this uncommon disorder. The European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) has developed 6 warning signs to increase awareness of adult PIDs. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of PID in older adults regardless of the reason for presentation and to evaluate the effectiveness of the 6 warning signs of ESID in the diagnosis of PIDs. METHODS: The study included 1,331 patients aged ≥65 years who presented at our clinic f

Structured Immune Workup in Healthy Children With a First Episode of Severe Bacterial Infection: A 7-year Single-Center Study.

BACKGROUND: Severe bacterial infections (SBIs) in otherwise healthy children are rare and may represent an underlying impairment of the immune system, including primary immunodeficiency. However, it is unclear whether and how children should be assessed. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from hospital records of previously healthy children aged 3 days to 18 years with SBI, including pleuropneumonia, meningitis, and/or sepsis. Patients were diagnosed or immunologically followed up between 1 January 2013 and 31 March 2020. RESULTS: Among 432 children with SBI, findings could be analyze

[Good syndrome: a rare, unusual immunodeficiency condition].

Good syndrome is an infrequent and unique clinical entity of associated thymoma and immunodeficiency, first described almost 70 years ago. It is characterized by increased susceptibility to recurrent invasive bacterial and opportunistic infections as well as autoimmune and malignant diseases with an omnious prognosis. The affected patients are mainly middle-aged persons. The most consistent immunological abnormalities are hypogammaglobulinemia and reduced/absent B cells. More recently it was classified as an acquired combined (T, B) immunodeficiency and labelled as a phenocopy. This complex im

Inborn Errors of Immunity on the Island of Ireland - a Cross-Jurisdictional UKPID/ESID Registry Report.

The epidemiology of inborn errors of immunity (IEI) in the Republic of Ireland was first published in 2005 but has not been updated since. IEI prevalence data from Northern Ireland was last published in 2018. Using data from the United Kingdom Primary Immune Deficiency (UKPID) and European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) registries, we reviewed all registered cases of IEI affecting adult patients ≥ 18 years of age from the two largest immunology specialist centres in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, respectively and calculated the combined minimum adult prevalence of IEI on

Clinical and Therapeutic Aspects of Sideroblastic Anaemia with B-Cell Immunodeficiency, Periodic Fever and Developmental Delay (SIFD) Syndrome: a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sideroblastic anaemia with B-cell immunodeficiency, periodic fever and developmental delay (SIFD) syndrome is a novel rare autoinflammatory multisystem disorder. We performed a systematic review of the available clinical and therapeutics aspects of the SIFD syndrome. METHODS: A systematic review according to PRISMA approach, including all articles published before the 30th of July 2021 in Pubmed and EMBASE database, was performed. RESULTS: The search identified 29 publications describing 58 unique patients. To date, 41 unique mutations have been reported. Onset of dis

[Prophylactic and therapeutic management of increased susceptibility to infection in patients with immunodeficiency].

Infections are an important warning sign for a weakened immune system. In the internal medical practice acquired (secondary), particularly drug-induced immunodeficiencies, are much more frequent than congenital (primary) immunodeficiencies. The management starts as early as the planning phase before initiation of immunosuppression. The risk of infection should be individually stratified and protective vaccinations should be completed. Depending on the immunosuppressive treatment, there can be a necessity for preventive treatment, e.g. for latent tuberculosis infection or hepatitis B. The serol
