Parental Action and Referral Patterns in Spatial Clusters of Childhood Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Sociodemographic factors have long been associated with disparities in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Studies that identified spatial clustering of cases have suggested the importance of information about ASD moving through social networks of parents. Yet there is no direct evidence of this mechanism. This study explores the help-seeking behaviors and referral pathways of parents of diagnosed children in Costa Rica, one of two countries in which spatial clusters of cases have been identified. We interviewed the parents of 54 diagnosed children and focused on social network connectio

Parental Problem Recognition and Help-Seeking for Disruptive Behavior Disorders.

Millions of children across the USA have unmet mental health needs. When these include the disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs)-oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-this can mean significant long-term consequences. Since children rarely seek treatment themselves, parents are central to the help-seeking process. This paper reviews research on the rates of problem recognition and help-seeking for DBDs, and on perceptual barriers that might hinder service engagement. Most children with DBDs are neither identified as such n

Navigating the artificial intelligence-informed patient: a cross-sectional study of physicians' perceptions and clinical practices.

BACKGROUND: Driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) tools, patients are increasingly acquiring medical information independently. While existing literature focus on examining patients' use of AI tools, understanding physicians' perspective is essential for patient care. Currently, there is a lack of research examining physicians' perceptions and clinical practices regarding AI-informed patients, particularly concerning how these dynamics are influenced by physicians' sociodemographic factors. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to explore physicians' perceptions and practices towards pa

Community knowledge of Australia's national preventive health strategy focus areas: a nationally representative survey of 1509 adults.

BACKGROUND: While some general patterns and trends of health information seeking and literacy in the Australian population are known, there is a need to understand these behaviours and skills specific to the focus areas outlined in the National Preventive Health Strategy (NPHS). METHODS: In response, this study employed a cross-sectional online survey of adults in the Australian general population (n = 1509) to investigate their knowledge and health information seeking behaviour regarding the NPHS' seven focus areas. It also explored primary care practitioners as a preventive health informati

What Does the Proxyseeker Tell to Whom, in Which Channel, and with What Effect? Understanding Information Transfer for Others' Health Issues Based on Lasswell's Communication Model.

While proxy health information-seeking (proxyseeking) is common, little is known about the subsequent communication transfer between the proxy and the health-affected person. Thus, this study applies Lasswell's communication model-examining who communicates what, to whom, through which channel, and with what effect-alongside Tomasello's concept of communication as cooperation to analyze shared intentions across different relationship types. We conducted semi-structured online interviews with n = 53 proxyseekers and n = 25 corresponding health affected persons. With regard to the what, proxies

Measuring planetary health knowledge: Development and psychometric evaluation of a taxonomy-based test.

Planetary Health Knowledge (PHK) refers to knowledge about global conditions and interrelations between the health of the planet, human health, and human civilization. In times of various humanitarian and environmental crises, knowledge about and awareness of these problems become increasingly important. This is reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals and various Global Citizenship Education programs that emphasize the importance of knowledge about global challenges as a key characteristic in promoting sustainability. Despite its relevance, a comprehensive, psychometrically evaluated me

Hierarchical cue control of cocaine seeking in the face of cost.

RATIONALE: Addiction is characterized by intermittent drug seeking despite rising costs. This behavior is heavily influenced by environmental stimuli that signal drug availability and reinforce drug seeking. OBJECTIVE: To establish the relationship between three key aspects of human drug use in rats: the intermittent, binge nature of drug intake, the motivational conflict of drug seeking in the face of escalating negative costs, and the ability of different drug cues to interact to modulate relapse. METHODS: Male and female rats were trained to self-administer cocaine on an intermittent acce

Imprecise action selection in substance use disorder: Evidence for active learning impairments when solving the explore-exploit dilemma.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a major public health risk. However, mechanisms accounting for continued patterns of poor choices in the face of negative life consequences remain poorly understood. METHODS: We use a computational (active inference) modeling approach, combined with multiple regression and hierarchical Bayesian group analyses, to examine how treatment-seeking individuals with one or more SUDs (alcohol, cannabis, sedatives, stimulants, hallucinogens, and/or opioids; N = 147) and healthy controls (HCs; N = 54) make choices to resolve uncertainty within a gambling t
