Background: Some breastfeeding mothers try to increase their milk supply through pharmaceutical, dietary, and behavioral strategies that vary in effectiveness. Information seeking behaviors may influence which strategies mothers use. Objective: To describe where mothers obtain information about increasing milk supply, describe the perceived influence of each information source on decision-making about strategies for increasing milk supply, and explore associations between information sources and mothers' use of galactagogues (i.e., pharmaceutical and dietary strategies) and behavioral strategi…

A content analysis of mass media sources in relation to the MMR vaccine scare.

In light of the mass media coverage that the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine received as a result of questions raised about its safety, a content analysis of mass media articles about the MMR vaccine was undertaken. The analysis examined 227 articles published in five different information sources in a 2 month period. The analysis looked at 94 content-based variables and the key attributes of these articles including word count and date of publication. Descriptive and analytical statistics relating to both article content and format were produced. The analysis showed that the content …

Exploring Health Literacy and the Correlates of Pap Testing Among African Immigrant Women: Findings from the AfroPap Study.

African immigrant (AI) women have low rates of Pap testing. Health literacy plays a pivotal role in health behaviors. Sources and types of health information could shape health literacy and inform the Pap testing behaviors of AI women. However, the influences of health literacy, sources, and types of health information along with cultural and psychosocial correlates on the Pap testing behaviors of AI women are poorly understood. To examine how sources and types of health information impact health literacy, and in turn, how health literacy and cultural and psychosocial factors influence the Pap

Decisional involvement and information preferences of patients with hematologic malignancies.

Understanding decisional involvement and information preferences in patients with hematologic malignancies may help to optimize physician-patient communication about treatment decisions and align the decision-making processes with patients' preferences. We described and examined factors associated with preferences of patients with hematologic malignancies for decisional involvement, information sources, and presentation of information. In a multicenter observational study, we recruited 216 patients with hematologic malignancies of any stage from September 2003 to June 2007. Patients were asked…

Authority reliance vs. deliberative assessment in processing online rumors: evidence from fNIRS.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to clarify how the authority of a fact-checker shapes neurocognitive processing of online rumors. Specifically, this study examined differences in neural responses to corrections provided by authoritative and non-authoritative sources. APPROACH: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to measure neural activity in the prefrontal cortex while participants evaluated information that had been fact-checked by either authoritative or non-authoritative third-party sources. Behavioral metrics, such as judgment accuracy, were collected alongside neural data to

Disentangling the effects of similarity, familiarity, and liking on social inference strategies.

People constantly make inferences about others' beliefs and preferences. People can draw on various sources of information to make these inferences, including stereotypes, self-knowledge, and target-specific knowledge. What leads people to use each of these sources of information over others? The current study examined factors that influence the use of these sources of information, focusing on three interpersonal dimensions - the extent to which people feel (a) familiar with, (b) similar to, or (c) like the target. In four studies (total N = 1136), participants inferred the beliefs and prefere

Social media for mental health literacy: credibility and usefulness in information-seeking behaviors of college students.

Sagittal abdominal diameter: A novel and potentially superior indicator than waist circumference for diagnosis of central obesity, based on evidence from multiple data sources.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Our previous research reported a visceral fat area (VFA) estimation equation primarily based on sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), demonstrating favorable performance compared to traditional Waist Circumference (WC)-based equations. While WC is widely used for central obesity measurement, its accuracy needs improvement. This study aims to investigate whether SAD has advantages over WC in diagnosing central obesity and to determine the optimal cut-off values for diagnosis. METHODS: This cross-sectional, retrospective cohort study analyzed 6762 individuals from NHANES (2011

Patient knowledge and expectations in endoscopic sinus surgery.

BACKGROUND: The potential for patient misconceptions about endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) has implications for the informed consent process. An understanding of patients' baseline knowledge and sources of information regarding ESS would improve surgeons' ability to counsel patients preoperatively and provide effective educational materials. METHODS: A prospective patient survey was performed at 2 independent tertiary care medical centers. Patients who were offered ESS as part of routine rhinology care were queried about expectations, knowledge, and sources of information regarding ESS before

The WHO Said What? Interaction of Source Credibility and Readers' Prior Beliefs in the Reading of Social-Media Posts.

Evaluating sources is an essential skill in our misinformation-riddled media environment. However, previous studies suggest that people tend not to engage with source information during reading, and very little research exists on how source credibility and readers' beliefs interact on social media. We examined how source credibility and prior beliefs affect reading social-media posts. Finnish university students (N = 83) first filled out a questionnaire measuring beliefs on eight controversial topics and then read 76 mock-up tweets on these topics while their eye movements were recorded. The s

The Impact of Air Pollution Information on Individuals' Exercise Behavior: Empirical Study Using Wearable and Mobile Devices Data.

BACKGROUND: Physical exercise and exposure to air pollution have counteracting effects on individuals' health outcomes. Knowledge on individuals' real-time exercise behavior response to different pollution information sources remains inadequate. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the extent to which individuals avoid polluted air during exercise activities in response to different air pollution information sources. METHODS: We used data on individuals' exercise behaviors captured by wearable and mobile devices in 83 Chinese cities over a 2-year time span. In our data set, 35.99% (5896/16,…

Using Health Information Resources for People With Cognitive Impairment (digiDEM Bayern): Registry-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a growing global health challenge with significant economic and social implications. Underdiagnosis of dementia is prevalent due to a lack of knowledge and understanding among the general population. Enhancing dementia literacy through improved health information-seeking behavior is crucial for the self-determined management of the disease by those affected. Understanding the relationship between dementia literacy, health information-seeking behavior, and the use of various information sources among individuals with cognitive impairment is of high importance in this con…
