Trap shape affects efficacy of sticky traps for New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), is an obligate parasite of warm-blooded animals and a serious threat to livestock, wild animals, and humans. The sterile insect technique (SIT) was used to eradicate screwworm from North and Central America during the mid-1900s to the early-2000s. Traps are an important tool for screwworm control programs, where they are used for surveillance, evaluation of production strains, and to estimate the ratio of wild to sterile flies following aerial and ground releases. Here, we tested two trap designs for capturing New World screwworm. The ve

Implications of environmentally shaped microbial communities for insecticide resistance in Sitobion miscanthi.

Insect-associated bacteria play an important role in the resistance to pesticides, yet bacterial community compositions in wild insect host populations and the environmental factors that shape them are mostly elusive. In this study, Sitobion miscanthi (Takahashi) populations were collected from major wheat growing regions in China. Following high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene fragments, association analyses were performed within the bacterial community associated with S. miscanthi, as well as with population resistance levels to four commonly used pesticides and different environmenta

Comparative Tolerance Levels of Maize Landraces and a Hybrid to Natural Infestation of Fall Armyworm.

Insect pests such as Spodoptera frugiperda cause significant losses to maize (Zea mays mays). Control of S. frugiperda is difficult, but the use of insect resistant cultivars, including tolerant cultivars, is a promising alternative, and landraces are a potential source of insect resistance. This study investigated tolerance to S. frugiperda in five Brazilian landraces, Amarelão, Aztequinha, Branco Antigo, Palha Roxa, and São Pedro, in relation to one conventional (non-Bt) hybrid, BM207, under field conditions. We assessed tolerance as the ratio of insecticide-free to insecticide-protected pla

Dodecanol, metabolite of entomopathogenic fungus Conidiobolus coronatus, affects fatty acid composition and cellular immunity of Galleria mellonella and Calliphora vicina.

One group of promising pest control agents are the entomopathogenic fungi; one such example is Conidiobolus coronatus, which produces a range of metabolites. Our present findings reveal for the first time that C. coronatus also produces dodecanol, a compound widely used to make surfactants and pharmaceuticals, and enhance flavors in food. The main aim of the study was to determine the influence of dodecanol on insect defense systems, i.e. cuticular lipid composition and the condition of insect immunocompetent cells; hence, its effect was examined in detail on two species differing in susceptib

Multiple mutations in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor Ccα6 gene associated with resistance to spinosad in medfly.

Spinosad is an insecticide widely used for the control of insect pest species, including Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata. Its target site is the α6 subunit of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and different mutations in this subunit confer resistance to spinosad in diverse insect species. The insect α6 gene contains 12 exons, with mutually exclusive versions of exons 3 (3a, 3b) and 8 (8a, 8b, 8c). We report here the selection of a medfly strain highly resistant to spinosad, JW-100 s, and we identify three recessive Ccα6 mutant alleles in the JW-100 s population: (i) Ccα63aQ68*

Identifying an Optimal Screen Mesh to Enable Augmentorium-Based Enhanced Biological Control of the Olive Fruit Fly Bactrocera oleae (Diptera: Tephritidae) and the Mediterranean Fruit Fly Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae).

The augmentorium is a cost-effective screened enclosure designed to receive fruits infested with insect pests, retain the pests inside but let their natural enemies escape to enhance biological control of pest populations. Screen selection is critical to ensure that an augmentorium is effective for a particular system. Here we tested five types of screens with a mini-augmentorium design and measured the escape of four insect species under laboratory conditions: the pests olive fruit fly Bactocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae) and Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (D

Toxicological outcome of exposure to psychoactive drugs carbamazepine and diazepam on non-target insect Nauphoeta cinerea.

The continuous detection of human pharmaceuticals during environmental biomonitoring is a global concern because of the menaces they may exert on non-target organisms. Carbamazepine (CBZ) and diazepam (DZP) are commonly prescribed psychotropic drugs which have been reported to coexist in the environment globally. Nauphoeta cinerea is a common insect with high ecological impact. This study elucidated the influence of co-exposure to DZP (0.5 and 1.0 μg kg-1 diet) and CBZ (1.5 and 3.0 μg kg-1 diet) for 42 days on the behavior and biochemical responses in Nauphoeta cinerea. Results showed that DZP

Using species distribution models to optimize vector control in the framework of the tsetse eradication campaign in Senegal.

Tsetse flies are vectors of human and animal trypanosomoses in sub-Saharan Africa and are the target of the Pan African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign (PATTEC). Glossina palpalis gambiensis (Diptera: Glossinidae) is a riverine species that is still present as an isolated metapopulation in the Niayes area of Senegal. It is targeted by a national eradication campaign combining a population reduction phase based on insecticide-treated targets (ITTs) and cattle and an eradication phase based on the sterile insect technique. In this study, we used species distribution models to opt

Recent advances in vector control in filariasis.

Three factors are involved when vector control is incorporated into an integrated control program for filariasis: (1) the vector species or species complex of each filarial worm; (2) type of control measures employed; (3) pesticide application. Recent advances in vector control in filariasis include the use of bed nets, environmental manipulation, insecticides and biological control. Three promising advances in vectrol control are the use of pathogenic bacteria such as Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 and B. sphaericus, juvenile hormone mimics or insect growth regulator (IGR) and predatory crustace

SIT 2.0: 21(st) Century genetic technology for the screwworm sterile-insect program.

Release of sterile insects, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), can be an extremely effective and precise method of pest control. A study in BMC Biology from the New World screwworm SIT program and others shows that modern genetic methods can provide major improvements even to this well-established and highly successful SIT program.See research article: https://bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12915-016-0296-8.

Decoding and engineering temperature-sensitive lethality in Ceratitis capitata for pest control.

The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is a species-specific and environmentally friendly method for effectively controlling pest insect populations based on releasing reared, sterile insects into infested areas. Sex sorting in rearing facilities, enabling male-only releases, is necessary to ensure SIT programs are efficient, cost-effective and, in case of mosquito control, also safe. This can be greatly facilitated by genetic sexing strains (GSS), exhibiting sex-specific phenotypic markers. However, the development of GSS remains challenging. The construction of a temperature-sensitive lethal (ts

Composition of the entomofauna in Anopheles spp. breeding sites and evaluation of a novel Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis-based larvicide against Anopheles darlingi (Diptera: Culicidae) and non-target aquatic insects under simulated field condition.

Malaria remains a serious public health problem in the Amazon. The main vector, Anopheles darlingi, uses natural and artificial water bodies as breeding grounds, places that harbor various aquatic insects, which should be considered in control programs. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine the composition of the aquatic entomofauna associated with Anopheles spp. breeding sites and to evaluate the efficacy of a new Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis biolarvicide against An. darlingi, as well as its impact on non-target insects under simulated field conditions. Superinfection interference of alpha and orthoflavivirus pathogens by homologous non-pathogenic vaccine strains.

We have developed host-restricted, live attenuated virus (HR-LAV) vaccine strains of six tropical disease pathogens (chikungunya and dengue 1-4) that are non-pathogenic in vertebrates. The HR-LAV vaccine strains replicate efficiently in insect cells but are severely impaired in their replication within vertebrate cells, and the large deletions in these vaccine strains effectively prevent reversion to the wild type (WT) in the restrictive host. Here, we describe a novel approach that uses these homologous, but non-pathogenic HR-LAV vaccine strains to disrupt replication of secondary infections

Genomics, transcriptomics, and peptidomics of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) neuropeptides.

Neuropeptides control many physiological and behavioral processes, and so they are functionally important classes of cell-to-cell signaling molecules. Nowadays, the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is one of the most destructive agricultural pests in the world. In this study, we mined the publicly accessible genome assembly data for S. frugiperda, and the transcriptomic and proteomic data of the larval central nervous system (CNS) for putative neuropeptide-encoding, and subsequently we used these to anticipate a peptidome for this species. In essence, we could identify 57 orthologs of ins

An insect-inspired collapsible wing hinge dampens collision-induced body rotation rates in a microrobot.

Some flying insects frequently collide their wingtips with obstacles, and the next generation of insect-inspired micro air vehicles will inevitably face similar wing collision risks when they are deployed in real-world environments. Wasp wings feature a flexible resilin joint called a 'costal break' that allows the wingtip to reversibly collapse upon collision, helping to mitigate wing damage over repeated collisions. However, the costal break may provide additional benefits beyond reducing wing wear. We tested the hypothesis that a collapsible wing tip can also dampen sudden and unpredictable

The great potential of entomopathogenic bacteria Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus for mosquito control: a review.

The control of insects of medical importance, such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are still the only effective way to prevent the transmission of diseases, such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika. Their control is performed mainly using chemical products; however, they often have low specificity to non-target organisms, including humans. Also, studies have reported resistance to the most commonly used insecticides, such as the organophosphate and pyrethroids. Biological control is an ecological and sustainable method since it has a slow rate of insect resistance development. Bacterial spec
