Bites and mites: prevention and protection of vector-borne disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) are difficult to prevent and control because it is hard to predict the complex habits of mosquitoes, ticks and fleas; most vector-borne viruses or bacteria infect animals as well as humans, which further adds to this difficulty. Thus, prevention is the best protection against VBD. RECENT FINDINGS: Vaccines are available for yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis and tick-borne encephalitis and several vaccines are in clinical trials for dengue fever. Antimalarial intermittent preventive therapy (sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine) and insecticide-treated mo

Adulticidal and repellent properties of indigenous plant extracts against Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Several diseases are associated to the mosquito-human interaction. Mosquitoes are the carriers of severe and well-known illnesses such as malaria, arboviral encephalitis, dengue fever, chikunguniya fever, West Nile virus, and yellow fever. These diseases produce significant morbidity and mortality in humans and livestock around the world. The adulticidal and repellent activities of crude hexane, ethyl acetate, benzene, chloroform, and methanol extracts of leaf of Eclipta alba and Andrographis paniculata were assayed for their toxicity against two important vector mosquitoes, viz., Culex quinqu

Efficacy of botanical extracts against Japanese encephalitis vector, Culex tritaeniorhynchus.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the effect of leaf hexane and chloroform extracts of Aegle marmelos, Andrographis lineata, Andrographis paniculata, Cocculus hirsutus, Eclipta prostrata, and Tagetes erecta on repellent, ovicidal, and oviposition-deterrent activities against Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles (Diptera: Culicidae). The repellent action of the plant extracts tested varied depending on the plant species, part, solvent used in extraction, and the extract dose. The hexane extract of A. paniculata was more effective in exhibiting the repellent action against the mosquito as

Prevention of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease and the use of tick repellents and physical protective measures to prevent the disease are discussed. Lyme disease is a multiple-organ-system, immune-mediated inflammatory disorder transmitted by the bites of ixodid ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. An individual is at greatest risk for infection when a tick has been attached to the skin for more than 24 hours. Lyme disease occurs in three stages and may affect the skin, nervous system, cardiac system, and joints. Antimicrobials used in management consist primarily of penicillins, cephalosporins, tetracyclines, and erythro

Chemical Composition and Biological Activities of Croton sertanejus Essential Oil Against Aedes aegypti and Preliminary Toxicity in Mus Musculus.

The objective was to evaluate the essential oil (EO) from Croton sertanejus leaves against Aedes aegypti, analyzing spatial repellency (SR), topical effective concentration (EC), EC protection time, oviposition deterrence, and preliminary toxicity in Mus musculus. Additionally, the chemical composition of the oil was characterized. Results showed a significant SR of 0.2 starting from 1 mg/cm2. The ECs required to repel 50% and 99% of the mosquitoes were 3 and 109 mg/cm2, respectively. The EC of 109 mg/cm2 provided 64.8% protection against landings within 360 min and 100% protection against blo

COMPARATIVE BEHAVIORAL RESPONSES OF Β-CARYOPHYLLENE AGAINST ANOPHELES MOSQUITO SPECIES, POTENTIAL VECTORS OF MALARIA IN THAILAND.

Insecticide-based mosquito control poses risks of environmental harm and resistance development. As a safer alternative, β-caryophyllene, a nontoxic compound derived from plants, was evaluated as a safer alternative for its excito-repellency against four Anopheles mosquito species. Using an excito-repellency assay, An. minimus showed the highest escape rates (100%) at 2.5% (contact) and 5% (noncontact) concentrations. An. harrisoni also exhibited strong responses at 7.5%, with 94.34% (contact) and 72.73% (noncontact) escape. In contrast, An. epiroticus showed minimal response (12-25.42%). Sign

QSAR Study of Biologically Active Essential Oils against Beetles Infesting the Walnut in Catamarca, Argentina.

Essential oils from six species of aromatic plants collected in the Catamarca Province of Argentina were evaluated for their chemical composition and repellent and insecticidal activities against beetles of the genus Carpophilus (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) and Oryzaephilus (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) that infest the local walnut production. Experimental data were analyzed using generalized estimating equations, with normal distribution and the identity link function. From the spectral information from the tested essential oils, we worked their molecular modeling as mixtures by developing mixture de

Oviposition Deterrents in Larval Frass of Potato Tuberworm Moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

The potato tuberworm moth (PTM) Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most damaging pests of potato Solanum tuberosum L. in warm temperate and subtropical areas. Our previous experiment showed that extracts of larval frass of PTM deterred oviposition of conspecific females. In this study, we investigated the identification of chemicals in larval frass that were influencing the oviposition of PTM by behavioral bioassays and electroantennography analysis in the laboratory. Frass was collected from third and fourth instar larvae and combined analysis of gas chr

Bioassay-guided investigation of two Monarda essential oils as repellents of yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti.

As part of an ongoing research program to identify active mosquito repellents, Monarda bradburiana Beck and Monarda fistulosa L. essential oils showed good repellent activity with minimum effective dosages (MED) of 0.055 ± 0.036 and 0.078 ± 0.027 mg/cm(2), respectively, compared to reference standard N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) (0.039 ± 0.014 mg/cm(2)). Systematic bioassay-guided fractionation of essential oils of both Monarda species was performed to identify the active repellent compounds, and isolated pure compounds were individually tested for repellency. Of the isolated compounds

Response of nymphal Ixodes scapularis, the primary tick vector of Lyme disease spirochetes in North America, to barriers derived from wood products or related home and garden items.

Forest products were tested to see if they functioned as a barrier to nymphal Ixodes scapularis. These products could potentially be used to define a border between high density and low density tick zones on residential properties in Lyme disease endemic regions of North America. Common home and garden items were also tested. Three wood products effectively acted as barriers to nymphal I. scapularis: Alaska Yellow Cedar sawdust, Alaska Yellow Cedar woodchips, and cellulose. These three products were then weathered to determine how long they remained active. Cellulose and Alaska Yellow Cedar wo

Insecticidal activity of photoactive dyes to American and migratory grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae).

Many photoactive dyes are relatively nontoxic to vertebrates despite their insecticidal properties. Several photoactive dyes known to be toxic to some groups of insects were evaluated at various concentrations for toxicity to American and migratory grasshoppers in laboratory and field studies. Rose bengal and phloxine B were effective at inducing mortality of grasshoppers when applied at 2 and 5% to bran bait, though erythrosin B and uranine were ineffective. Partial replacement of phloxine with uranine in dye mixtures resulted in no significant loss of efficacy. Some indication of feeding inh

Evaluation of the cotton fabric model for screening topical mosquito repellents.

The data of King (1954) were analyzed by rank correlation methods to determine if the results of tests of candidate mosquito repellents on cotton fabric were correlated with the results of tests of the same compounds on the skin. The coefficient of rank correlation was statistically significant (P less than 0.01) for tests against salt marsh mosquitoes, Aedes sollicitans and Ae. taeniorhynchus, and yellow fever mosquitoes, Ae. aegypti, but not for tests against malaria mosquitoes, Anopheles quadrimaculatus. The coefficient of rank correlation was small (rs less than or equal to 0.40), and it w

Evolutionarily entrenched odorant receptors for (E)-β-farnesene signaling in Aphidinae aphids.

Alarm pheromones are crucial for the survival of social insects, enabling coordinated escape from predators. Their evolution has co-evolved with the development of olfactory recognition systems, suggesting specific molecular mechanisms underlie this adaptive relationship. We analyzed alarm pheromone compositions across 36 aphid species and found that EBF serves as the sole or primary alarm signal in the Aphidinae subfamily. Genomic annotation of 13 aphid species identified eight conserved, Aphidinae-specific odorant receptor (OR) clades under strong purifying selection. Three receptors-OR5, OR

Naphthalene or Mothball Poisoning Manifesting as Acute Intravascular Hemolysis and Acquired Methemoglobinemia.

Naphthalene is a major component of mothballs. Domestically, people use mothballs as an insect repellent. Its deliberate or accidental ingestion leading to toxicity has rarely been reported in the medical literature, despite its widespread use in Southeast Asia. Naphthalene, or mothball poisoning, is a rare but serious condition that can have detrimental effects on human health. This case report presents the clinical course of a 22-year-old male who ingested six naphthalene balls, resulting in severe symptoms including fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, jaundice, and dark-colored urine. Laborato
