In Situ Simulation as a Quality Improvement Tool to Identify and Mitigate Latent Safety Threats for Emergency Department SARS-CoV-2 Airway Management: A Multi-Institutional Initiative.

BACKGROUND: In situ simulation has emerged as a powerful quality improvement (QI) tool in the identification of latent safety threats (LSTs). Following the first wave of SARS-CoV-2 at an urban epicenter of the disease, a multi-institutional collaborative was formed to integrate an in situ simulation protocol across five emergency departments (EDs) for systems improvement of acute airway management. METHODS: A prospective, multi-institutional QI initiative using two Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles was implemented across five EDs. Each institution conducted simulations involving mannequins in a

Frailty and Oncology: An Increasingly Common Combination.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is defined by a reduction in physiological reserve and an increased vulnerability to stressors. In oncology, frailty is highly prevalent and has been consistently associated with a worse prognosis. The aim of this manuscript is to understand the interaction between frailty and cancer to optimise therapeutic decision-making and improve patient-centred outcomes. METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted using the PubMed database, with articles published up to July 2025 included. The search terms used included "frailty", "oncology", "cancer", "malignancy", "diagnos

MRIgRT real-time target tracking: TrackRAD2025 challenge report.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided radiotherapy (MRIgRT) integrates MRI with linear accelerators (MRI-linacs), enabling real-time motion management based on temporally resolved 2D MRI (cine-MRI). Current systems rely on template matching or deformable image registration for radiotherapy target (typically the gross tumor volume) localization, which allows beam gating. Further advances in localization could support more precise and efficient delivery methods. https://trackrad2025.grand-challenge.org/ was organized to provide a common dataset to benchmark algorithms for MRIgRT target trackin

The role of palliative care for patients with left ventricular assist devices: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have revolutionized the care of patients with advanced heart failure (HF). Compared to guideline-directed medical and device therapies, LVAD technology improves quality of life and reduces mortality. Palliative care specialists have an important role to play in the pre-LVAD evaluation phase, in the post-operative longitudinal care phase, and at the end-of-life in patients with LVADs. The objective of this narrative review is to describe the evidence regarding the role of palliative care for patients with LVAD across the care con

The Rate of Infusion Represents an Important Aspect of Administering Anticancer Agents.

BackgroundInfusion rate is one of the essential elements that should be included in all intravenous orders. Patients may experience adverse consequences or risks associated with inappropriate infusion. Meanwhile, there is growing pressure on the chemotherapy unit to deliver treatment quickly, efficiently, and safely, and thus it is very necessary to improve the chemotherapy process and service to cancer patients. Clinicians should consider how to further standardize infusion therapy, and innovate new infusion strategies to increase efficacy, reduce toxicity, improve patient satisfaction and sa

Impact of family history risk assessment on surgical decisions and imaging surveillance at breast cancer diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: In June 2013, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published guidance on the management of women with a family history (FH) of breast cancer (BC) and a personal diagnosis of BC. When diagnosed with BC, pressure of timely treatment takes priority and there is potential for a significant FH to be overlooked. This can affect treatment options and follow-up imaging (FUI) surveillance. METHODS: The practice in our breast unit was compared with the NICE guidance with regard to arranging appropriate FUI and referral to the genetics team for women diagnosed with

Learning from OCTET - exploring the acceptability of clinical trials management methods.

BACKGROUND: Conducting research can be time consuming, difficult and challenging. Guidance and pragmatic advice focussing on randomised controlled trial conduct are available but do not necessarily constitute comprehensive guidance. A successful trial is one that recruits to time and target and collects high-quality data within the originally agreed budget. Standardised trial management tools have outlined key project management elements for a successful trial as a method of ensuring good practice in research trials: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and closure. Lessons are also fre

Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Its Variants.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common malignant neoplasms involving the anterior skull base, resulting from local invasion from an adjacent anatomical region. The primary sites of origin are most frequently the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, and less often the skin and orbit. Treatment strategies for these tumors have evolved, although management remains challenging due to the proximity to critical structures and their location at the intracranial-extracranial interface. The rarity of these tumors, and limited numbers at any one institution, has meant that most published

What a discursive understanding of interprofessional team meetings might reveal: an exploration of intellectual (learning) disability managers' performances.

Clinical and academic understandings of interprofessional working are focused mainly on individual factors such as knowledge about different professional roles, and organisational opportunities for interprofessional working (IPW). Less research has examined what happens between people at an interactional level, that is, how interprofessional working is conducted in everyday face-to-face interactions in clinical practice. The current paper proposes a discursive framework for understanding what constitutes IPW in interprofessional meetings at this interactional level. Clinical effectiveness meet
