Mobile Application to Promote Adherence to Oral Chemotherapy and Symptom Management: A Protocol for Design and Development.

BackgroundOral chemotherapy is increasingly used in place of traditional intravenous chemotherapy to treat patients with cancer. While oral chemotherapy includes benefits such as ease of administration, convenience, and minimization of invasive infusions, patients receive less oversight, support, and symptom monitoring from clinicians. Additionally, adherence is a well-documented challenge for patients with cancer prescribed oral chemotherapy regimens. With the ever-growing presence of smartphones and potential for efficacious behavioral intervention technology, we created a mobile health inte

A web-based knowledge database to provide evidence-based information to cancer patients: Utilization within the PIKKO study.

PurposeCancer is associated with an urgent need for understandable and reliable information, which is often not satisfied by information available online. Therefore, as part of the PIKKO project, a web-based knowledge database (WDB) was introduced to provide cancer patients with quality-assured, evidence-based information. This paper aims to provide insights into the usage (Who? How? What?) and the effects regarding health literacy of the WDB.MethodsA patient survey and automatically generated logfile data were evaluated. Two user groups, patients and patient navigators (PNs), were compared.Re

Trends in Medicare reimbursement for end-stage renal disease: 1974-1979.

This article presents detailed analyses of the trends in Medicare expenditures for persons with end-stage renal disease. Program expenditures increased at an annual rate of 30.5 percent from 1974 to 1981. Three-fourths of this increase was a result of increases in enrollment. Per capita reimbursements for dialysis patients increased at a 5.2-percent annual rate and per capita reimbursements for transplant patients increased at a 10.5-percent annual rate. In 1979, per capital reimbursements for home dialysis patients were $5,000 less than for in-unit dialysis patients. Patient characteristics s

Contextualizing Measurement: Establishing a Construct and Content Foundation for the Assessment of Cancer-Related Dyadic Efficacy.

This paper illustrates a rigorous approach to the initial phases of scale development when evaluating an existing construct, dyadic efficacy, in a new population. Cancer-related dyadic efficacy represents a couples' confidence in their conjoint abilities to manage the effects of cancer. Two samples of individuals diagnosed with cancer and their partners, along with a professional panel, contributed lay and content expertise, respectively. Thematic analysis was used to describe cancer-related dyadic efficacy and identify content domains. Cancer-related dyadic efficacy was conceptualized as mult

A systematic review of patient and healthcare professional perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to embedding exercise in the adjuvant cancer treatment pathway.

PurposeEvidence suggests that physical activity and exercise interventions can mitigate cancer treatment side effects. However, an improved understanding of how physical activity/exercise can be embedded within cancer care pathways is needed. We examined what is known about the barriers and facilitators to implementing physical activity/exercise interventions in the adjuvant cancer treatment pathway from a patient and healthcare professional perspective. The protocol was registered a priori with PROSPERO in March 2023.MethodsElectronic databases (CINAHL Plus, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Cochrane) we

The role of social, economic, and medical marginalization in cancer clinical trial participation inequities: A systematic review.

Extant literature reveals how patients of marginalized social identities, socioeconomic status (SES), and medical experiences - especially patients of color and older adults - are underrepresented in cancer clinical trials (CCTs). Emerging evidence increasingly indicates CCT underrepresentation among patients of lower SES or rural origin, sexual and gender minorities, and patients with comorbid disability. This review applies an intersectional perspective to characterizing CCT representativeness across race and ethnicity, age, sexual and gender identity, SES, and disability. Four databases wer

Exploring Affordable Curative Therapy for Sickle Cell Disease in Africa: A Comprehensive Overview.

The practical aspects of developing curative treatments for sickle cell disease (SCD) in Africa, such as gene therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, involve strengthening healthcare infrastructure, training healthcare professionals, establishing regional treatment centers, and creating national SCD programs. The costs associated with gene therapy and stem cell transplants can be prohibitive, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Strategies to address affordability, including local manufacturing, government funding, and partnerships with global health agencies, are essen

Boosting and broadening recruitment to UK cancer trials: towards a blueprint for action.

Recruitment and retention in cancer trials are long-standing issues, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The UK National Institute of Health Research and leading clinicians have emphasised the urgency to achieve and surpass prepandemic levels of participation. Data from a recent UK trial demonstrated the impact of COVID-19 and highlighted factors that limited recruitment. In response to this worldwide problem, studies have identified strategies for remediation at the levels of funding, the research environment, study design and trial team-related aspects, yet evidence of progress is lacking.

Barriers to Recruitment and Retention Among Underrepresented Populations in Cancer Clinical Trials: A Qualitative Study of the Perspectives of Clinical Trial Research Coordinating Staff at a Cancer Center.

BackgroundAlthough US research agencies have instituted peer review processes to require participant diversity in clinical trials before funding decisions are made, the underrepresentation of certain populations (eg, racial and ethnic minorities) in clinical trials remains a persistent challenge in biomedical research. This issue has the potential to affect the generalizability of findings and impede efforts to ensure the provision of high-quality healthcare across all populations. In this study, we examined barriers to the recruitment and retention of underrepresented populations in cancer cl
