[Quid Nunc? The relationship between the medical world and society in Belgium and in Europe of the 25 at the dawn of the 21st century].

Since about twenty-five years, we observe important transformations of the socio-economic structures of our society, modifying the main references which reign over the social structures and thus over the medical world. As a result, we observe a social syndrome which we can define as a divorce between the medical world and the society. The consequences of this phenomenon can constitute a real danger for the whole society; nevertheless, actually we can still consider that Belgium can assure a very high level of medical care for the greatest part of the population for a really social prize. Relationship patterns in "folie à deux".

"Folie à deux" is characterized by the communication of delusional ideas from one subject to other ones who have been living closely with him for a long time, usually his relatives. Before illness shows, there is a leader-follower relationship between partners, who are lacking of external sources of pleasure and are socially or culturally isolated. The dominating partner usually is a paranoic subject who strongly needs his ideas to be accepted by other people, while the dominated partner is a dependent subject who shares the other one's ideas in order to get pleasure from him and who is not ab

Is meta-worry relevant to interpersonal problems? Testing the metacognitive model of generalized anxiety disorder in an analogue- and a clinical sample of GAD.

Interpersonal problems are common in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and improved interpersonal functioning is an important goal in treatment. In the metacognitive model of worry and generalized anxiety disorder, emotional distress and psychological dysfunction are related to two distinct types of worry. Particular emphasis is put on meta-worry which refers to "worry about worrying" or appraisal of worrying as threatening in itself. Meta-worry impairs effective mental regulation and might therefore be an important predisposition to self-regulate via others and thereof inter

Interpersonal complementarity in responses to auditory hallucinations in psychosis.

OBJECTIVES: Models of interpersonal relating have proposed that people are drawn to respond to others according to a principle of complementarity, whereby perceived hostility elicits reciprocal hostility and perceived dominance elicits submission. This study examined interpersonal appraisals and responses to auditory hallucinations, to determine whether this principle predicts how patients respond to hallucinated voices. DESIGN AND METHODS: Thirty-five participants with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder rated their internal 'relationship' with their auditory verbal hallucinations usin

Profiles of Traumatic Sexuality in Sex Therapy Patients: A Comparison of Interpersonal Trauma History and Sexual Well-Being.

This study explored profiles of traumatic sexuality (including six sex-related dimensions-dissociation, intrusiveness, shame and guilt, pleasing the other, interpersonal distress, and hypervigilance) and compared differences in sexual well-being and interpersonal trauma among the profiles. A latent profile analysis was performed on a clinical sample of 484 sex therapy patients consulting for sex and relationship related issues. Results identified three distinct profiles: Low Traumatic Sexuality (characterized by low to moderate scores, 87.8% of the sample), High Traumatic Sexuality (marked by

Sexual Behaviors Associated with HIV Transmission Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Young Adults: The Intersectional Role of Racism and Transphobia.

HIV prevalence and engagement in sexual behaviors associated with HIV transmission are high among transgender people of color. Per intersectionality, this disproportionate burden may be related to both interpersonal and structural racism and transphobia. The goal of this study was to estimate the association between interpersonal and structural discrimination and sexual behaviors among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) U.S. young adults. We used logit models with robust standard errors to estimate the individual and combined association between interpersonal and structural racism and transp

Characterizing Interpersonal Difficulties Among Young Adults Who Engage in Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Using a Daily Diary.

Compared to people who have never engaged in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), people with a history of NSSI report multiple interpersonal problems. Theories propose that these interpersonal difficulties play a role in prompting and maintaining NSSI. The cross-sectional nature of most studies in this area limits our understanding of how day-to-day interpersonal experiences relate to the global interpersonal impairments observed among individuals with NSSI, and vice versa. This study compared young adults with (n=60) and without (n=56) recent, repeated NSSI on baseline and daily measures of inter

Evidence for a vicious socioemotional cycle of negative emotions and interpersonal conflict.

UNLABELLED: Objective: Interpersonal and emotional functioning are closely linked and reciprocally influence one another. Contemporary integrative interpersonal theory (CIIT) offers a useful framework to conceptualize these patterns and guide interventions in cases where these patterns result in dysfunction. Stress processes offer several dynamic frameworks to guide empirical investigations using methods that allow for fine-grained analyses in the context of daily life. METHOD: Four samples of adults (Sample 1, N = 145; Sample 2, N = 160; Sample 3, N = 297; Sample 4 = 89 dyads, 178 individual

Perfectionism affects change in psychological symptoms.

The primary goal of this study was to examine how perfectionism affects psychological symptoms during the course of treatment. We examined session-by-session symptom changes in a sample of 105 adult clients who presented for counseling at a psychology training clinic housed at a large Midwestern university in the United States. Using a recently developed measure of perfectionism (Short Almost Perfect Scale [SAPS]) that possesses good psychometric features, we were able to investigate effects of both maladaptive (high self-criticism) and adaptive (high standards with low self-criticism) perfect

Predicting PTSD and complex PTSD from interpersonal violence in Japanese school-based extracurricular sports activities: using the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ).

INTRODUCTION: Victims of interpersonal violence in sports show various mental health concerns. However, no studies have quantitatively examined their primary complaints, considering psychological symptoms such as denial of self-concept and interpersonal challenges not captured by conventional post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Recently, an association between interpersonal violence victimization and complex PTSD (CPTSD) has been noted in Japanese sports coaching situations, specifically for extracurricular sports activities. This study aimed to examine the applicability of the Internationa

Patient interpersonal factors and the therapeutic alliance in two treatments for bulimia nervosa.

Although the therapeutic alliance is robustly associated with psychotherapy outcomes, less is known about factors that influence its development. This study examined the association between baseline patient interpersonal factors and patient-rated alliance in a randomized trial comparing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy (IPT) for bulimia nervosa. Using hierarchical linear modeling, early and middle alliance were negatively associated with interpersonal distress and positively associated with interpersonal affiliation. Middle alliance was also related to treatment gro

The Type A belief system: relationships to hostility, social support, and life stress.

Certain core beliefs may underlie the Type A behavior pattern, predisposing individuals to health problems and impaired interpersonal relationships. Previous studies have revealed that the Type A Cognitive Questionnaire (TACQ), a self-report measure reflecting these beliefs, is indeed related to emotional distress. The current study assessed the TACQ's relationship to aspects of the interpersonal environment, including perceived social support and stressful events. It also investigated the TACQ's relationship to subtypes of hostility (ie, cynicism and paranoid alienation). Subjects were 111 co…

Interpersonal Outcomes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Severe interpersonal difficulties are central to both complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), two trauma-related disorders with substantial clinical overlap. Whether their relational impairments reflect shared or distinct profiles remains an open question. To address this, we conducted a systematic review and three-level meta-analysis of 92 studies (20 on CPTSD, N = 9,657; 72 on BPD, N = 17,842) reporting associations with interpersonal problems. Medium-to-large effects were observed for both CPTSD (r = .48, 95% CI [0.37, 0.58]) and BPD (r = .39

'She called her partner - hence she is needy': depressed patients show increased tendencies to make spontaneous trait inferences.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal stress generation is an important maintaining factor in major depression; however, little is known about the psychological mechanisms that undermine interpersonal functioning. This study investigated the role of deficits in person perception to this regard. METHOD: Depressed patients (n = 20) and healthy controls (n = 20) completed a false recognition task that measured participants' tendencies to make spontaneous trait inferences (STIs), that is to spontaneously ascribe personality traits to other people. Participants then reported interpersonal daily hassles for on
