Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue with plasma cell differentiation: Periodic acid-schiff reaction-positive Dutcher body is a diagnostic clue to distinguish it from plasmacytoma.

We herein report a case of primary parotid extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) with Dutcher bodies. An 82-year-old man presented with a 4 cm × 2.5 cm mass in the left parotid region. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) showed localized abnormal fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the left parotid gland and lymph nodes of the left cervical region. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology of the left parotid gland showed lymphoplasmacytoid cells with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive Dutcher bodies. A subsequent excisional bi

Outbreaks of adenoviral gizzard erosion in slaughtered broiler chickens in Japan.

Gizzard erosion in broiler chickens was investigated at 18 slaughterhouses in Japan. The condition was observed in 13 of them, and adenoviral gizzard erosion (AGE) was diagnosed histologically, immunohistochemically and virologically in the eroded gizzards from nine of these 13. The antigen-positive intranuclear inclusion body of group 1 fowl adenovirus was observed in the epithelial cells of the affected gizzards, and fowl adenoviruses were isolated from the lesions. In two of the slaughterhouses the total weights of the gizzards disposed of in three years were 3590 kg (0.40 per cent of the g

Acute optic neuritis: a virological study in relation to multiple sclerosis.

Previous ultrastructural examination of peripheral blood lymphocytes revealed the presence of intranuclear filamentous structures in multiple sclerosis (MS) and in some optic neuritis (ON) patients. The present investigation was undertaken in the attempt to correlate the presence of such structures with the etiology of ON and MS and possibly to demonstrate the viral origin of the filaments. Suitable virological and serological techniques were used to detect and isolate infectious agents from peripheral blood samples and body excretions of 12 monosymptomatic ON patients at their first acute att

Neurofilament inclusion body disease: a new proteinopathy?

We describe four cases of a new clinicopathological entity presenting with either a frontotemporal dementia or corticobasal degeneration syndrome with a mean age of onset of 45 years (range 41-50) characterized pathologically by deposition of neurofilament proteins. All four patients had a rapidly progressive course and have become mute and non-ambulatory, and three have died after mean illness duration of only 3 years (range 2 1/2 -4). Both structural (MRI) and functional (PET and SPECT) imaging demonstrated frontal and temporal lobe and basal ganglia involvement. Gross neuropathological exam

Russell body gastritis with Dutcher bodies evaluated using magnification endoscopy.

Russell body gastritis (RBG) is an unusual type of chronic gastritis characterized by marked infiltration of Mott cells, which are plasma cells filled with spherical eosinophilic bodies referred to as Russell bodies. It was initially thought that Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection was a major cause of RBG and that the infiltrating Mott cells were polyphenotypic; however, a number of cases of RBG without H. pylori infection or with monoclonal Mott cells have been reported. Thus, diagnostic difficulty exists in distinguishing RBG with monoclonal Mott cells from malignant lymphoma. Here, w

Clinical and imaging characteristics of NOTCH3-negative CADASIL-suspected patients with NOTCH2NLC GGC repeat expansions.

Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is an autosomal dominant inherited neurodegenerative disease caused by NOTCH2NLC GGC repeat expansions. A high-intensity signal in the corticomedullary junction (CMJ) on magnetic resonance (MR) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a well-known characteristic of NIID. However, because of its diverse clinical symptoms and frequent presence of cerebral white matter hyperintensity (WMH) lesions on MRI, patients with NIID may be suspected of having other leukoencephalopathies. The aim of the present study was to identify patients with NOTCH2NLC GGC repe

Neuropathology of RAN translation proteins in fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome.

CGG repeat expansions in FMR1 cause the neurodegenerative disorder Fragile X-associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS). Ubiquitinated neuronal intranuclear inclusions (NIIs) are the neuropathological hallmark of FXTAS. Both sense strand derived CGG repeats and antisense strand derived CCG repeats support non-AUG initiated (RAN) translation of homopolymeric proteins in potentially 6 different reading frames. However, the relative abundance of these proteins in FXTAS brains and their co-localization with each other and NIIs is lacking. Here we describe rater-blinded assessment of immunohistochem

Induction of malignant vascular tumors of the liver in guinea pigs treated with 2,2'-dihydroxy-di-n-propylnitrosamine.

The effect of chronic administration of 2,2'-dihydroxy-di-n-propylnitrosamine (DHPN) was studied in randombred guinea pigs. DHPN, dissolved in olive oil, was injected sc into 40 animals at a dose of 250 mg/kg body weight/week for 30 weeks, and the animals were observed until their death or termination of the experiment at the end of 40 weeks. Of the 32 guinea pigs that survived more than 20 weeks of DHPN treatment, 23 developed angiosarcoma of the liver between 22 and 40 weeks. Metastases to lungs, spleen, and peripancreatic lymph nodes were observed in 8 animals. Other tumors included hepatoc

Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy: phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of 9 Polish patients.

Sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) is a vasoactive agent available worldwide since 1998 for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction. It is a selective phosphodiesterase type 5-enzyme inhibitor able to potentiate the downstream effects of nitric oxide on smooth muscle relaxation and vasodilation through its effects on the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (c-GMP) pathway in the erectile tissue of the penis. When sildenafil is orally administered, it is rapidly absorbed with a maximum plasma concentration achieved within 1 h and has a terminal half-life of between 3 to 6 h. The drug is extensively and

Fowl aviadenoviruses in Moroccan poultry: pathological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of circulating fowl aviadenovirus strains from 2012 to 2024.

Over the last decade, the emergence of aviadenovirus infections, namely inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) and gizzard erosion and ulceration syndrome (GEUS) has occurred in Morocco with significant losses to the poultry industry. In this work, 255 suspected flock cases of IBH and GEUS were assessed among various poultry production types in the country from 2012-2024. Macroscopic pathological changes in affected chickens included an enlarged, discoloured liver or a distended gizzard with haemorrhagic content and erosion/ulceration on the koilin layer. Microscopic findings revealed severe necrotic

Paragangliomas--a diagnostic dilemma on fine needle aspirates.

Paragangliomas are uncommon tumours arising from the neural crest and are widely distributed throughout the body. Because of the morphologic diversity of these tumours fine needle aspirate (FNA) diagnosis is not very accurate in identifying these neoplasms. Review of FNA from seven paragangliomas (three extra-adrenal, three carotid body and one multicentric in location) was conducted to find any diagnostic criteria. On initial morphologic diagnosis five of the seven paragangliomas were considered malignant (four undifferentiated and one adenocarcinoma). Review of these cases in our series made

p62 positive, TDP-43 negative, neuronal cytoplasmic and intranuclear inclusions in the cerebellum and hippocampus define the pathology of C9orf72-linked FTLD and MND/ALS.

Neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions (NCIs) containing phosphorylated TDP-43 (p-TDP-43) are the pathological hallmarks of motor neuron disease/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (MND/ALS) and FTLD-TDP. The vast majority of NCIs in the brain and spinal cord also label for ubiquitin and p62, however, we have previously reported a subset of TDP-43 proteinopathy patients who have unusual and abundant p62 positive, TDP-43 negative inclusions in the cerebellum and hippocampus. Here we sought to determine whether these cases carry the hexanucleotide repeat expansion in C9orf72. Repeat primer PCR was performed

Differential morphology and composition of inclusions in the R6/2 mouse and PC12 cell models of Huntington's disease.

The histological hallmark feature of Huntington's disease (HD) and other polyglutamine repeat diseases is the presence of intracellular inclusions. Much work has been devoted to trying to determine the relationship between inclusion formation and neuronal injury. However, little attention has been paid to the variability and characteristics of inclusions themselves. Here, we characterize the morphological and biochemical composition of inclusions in both a transgenic mouse model (R6/2 line) and an inducible cell culture model of HD (iPC12Q74). We identified several morphologically distinct kin

Molecular detection and pathological evaluation of canine adenovirus 1 in Indian bear species.

In this study, we investigated infectious canine hepatitis (ICH), caused by canine adenovirus 1 (CAdV-1), in 125 bear carcasses submitted for examination. CAdV-1 is known to cause severe disease in domestic dogs and in wild canids and bears. Using molecular and/or histopathological methods, CAdV-1 infection was confirmed in 12 cases: 11 in sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) and one in an Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus). Affected captive bears exhibited acute onset of high fever, jaundice, bloody vomitus, and foul-smelling diarrhoea, followed by death. Necropsy revealed widespread congestion

Naturally Acquired Mouse Kidney Parvovirus Infection Produces a Persistent Interstitial Nephritis in Immunocompetent Laboratory Mice.

Mouse kidney parvovirus (MKPV), also known as murine chapparvovirus (MuCPV), is an emerging, highly infectious agent that has been isolated from laboratory and wild mouse populations. In immunocompromised mice, MKPV produces severe chronic interstitial nephropathy and renal failure within 4 to 5 months of infection. However, the course of disease, severity of histologic lesions, and viral shedding are uncertain for immunocompetent mice. We evaluated MKPV infections in CD-1 and Swiss Webster mice, 2 immunocompetent stocks of mice. MKPV-positive CD-1 mice (n = 30) were identified at approximatel

CDK5 protects from caspase-induced Ataxin-3 cleavage and neurodegeneration.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is one of at least nine inherited neurodegenerative diseases caused by an expansion of a polyglutamine tract within corresponding disease-specific proteins. In case of SCA3, mutation of Ataxin-3 results in aggregation of misfolded protein, formation of intranuclear as well as cytosolic inclusion bodies and cell death in distinct neuronal populations. Since cyclin-dependent kinase-5 (CDK5) has been shown to exert beneficial effects on aggregate formation and cell death in various polyglutamine diseases, we tested its therapeutic potential for SCA3. Our data
