Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and mood in perimenopausal depression.

BACKGROUND: Previous work implicates high pro-inflammatory biomarkers in mood disturbance and low brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in major depression. However, in hormonally-sensitive premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), BDNF levels are higher when mood is worse. Perimenopausal depression has not been studied to date. We evaluated whether BDNF and inflammatory cytokines predict mood symptoms across the menstrual cycle in hormonally-sensitive perimenopausal depression symptoms. METHODS: Data from 49 time points derived from mid-to-late follicular phase [M/L-FP] and peri‑mens

Social factors associated with self-reported changes in mental health symptoms among youth in the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Children and youth experienced marked impacts on day-to-day life in the COVID-19 pandemic that were associated with poorer familial and friend relationships, and greater mental health challenges. Few studies provide self-report data on mental health symptoms from children and youth themselves. We sought to examine the associations between social factors and child and youth self-reported symptoms of worsened mood, anxiety, and irritability during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A nationally representative cross-sectional survey was administered online to collect self-report data ac

A Case Study of Negative Affixes in Sadegh Hedayat's Letters: The Effect of Bipolar Mood Disorder.

This research studies the morphological features found in Sadegh Hedayat's letters, who, based on linguistic and psychological studies, may have had bipolar disorder. It aims to assess the impact of various types of moods on the frequency of negative affixes through qualitative analysis of the letters' text. The letters are written in Persian, and include six negative derivational affixes. As bipolar disorder includes four episodes, all letters are analyzed on the basis of six negative affixes concerning the episodes using SPSS. The results indicate that each episode shows totally different ch

[Cannabis: Use and dependence].

The main characteristics of cannabis dependence are craving, persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control cannabis use and important social, occupational, or recreational activities given up or reduced because of cannabis use. Withdrawal symptoms include insomnia, irritability, anger, restlessness, depression, mood swings and cravings. Regular cannabis use induces cognitive impairment, especially of attention, episodic memory and working memory. Alcohol and other substances abuse or dependence are frequently found in patients with cannabis dependence. Psychiatric comorbidit

Bupropion Treatment for Stimulant Withdrawal in a Patient With Substance Use Disorder and Unspecified Bipolar Disorder.

Patients presenting with comorbid stimulant use disorder is a common occurrence in nearly all medical specialties. New clinical strategies to care for patients experiencing stimulant withdrawal should be considered as an effort to improve clinical outcomes. Our patient, a woman in her early 20s with a history of substance use disorder and unspecified bipolar and related disorder, presented with acute psychosis with symptoms including agitation, auditory hallucinations, and delusions in the context of chronic mental illness and cocaine abuse. She was subsequently admitted to the inpatient psych

Psychiatric and medical effects of anabolic-androgenic steroid use. A controlled study of 160 athletes.

BACKGROUND: We sought to expand on preliminary findings suggesting that anabolic-androgenic steroids produce psychiatric effects in some athletes who use them. METHODS: We compared 88 athletes who were using steroids with 68 nonusers, using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R to diagnose psychiatric syndromes occurring in association with steroid use (if applicable) and in the absence of steroid use. Demographic, medical, and laboratory measures were also performed. RESULTS: Steroid users displayed more frequent gynecomastia, decreased mean testicular length, and higher cholester

[Multidimensional psychometric assessment of preoperative mood. Effects of zolpidem compared to phenobarbital combined with promethazine as premedication].

The following double-blind, randomised study dealt with three questions: (1) Is a multidimensional psychometric rating scale suitable for the measurement of mood before anaesthesia? (2) What are the effects of the new benzodiazepine-like drug zolpidem on preoperative mood compared with phenobarbital? (3) Is the combination with Promethazine suggestive? METHODS. Three hundred and four patients were assigned to four groups (group 1: zolpidem 8.03 mg/promethazine 50 mg; group 2: zolpidem 8.03 mg/placebo; group 3: phenobarbital 100 mg/promethazine 50 mg; group 4: phenobarbital 100 mg/placebo). Oxcarbazepine in the treatment of child psychiatric disorders: a retrospective chart review.

Though not considered a first-line treatment, oxcarbazepine has become an option in the expanding effort to ameliorate severely dysregulated mood and behavioral symptoms in youth. Like most pharmaceuticals in child and adolescent psychiatry, oxcarbazepine is not U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. A search of the world literature found a single case report pertaining to this topic. This paper is a chart review of 14 children and adolescents treated with oxcarbazepine who presented with moderate to severe problems with anger and irritabil

Fructose malabsorption is associated with early signs of mental depression.

Fructose malabsorption is characterized by the inability to absorb fructose efficiently. As a consequence fructose reaches the colon were it is broken down by bacteria to short fatty acids, CO2 and H2. Bloating, cramps, osmotic diarrhea and other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are the consequence and can be seen in about 50% of fructose malabsorbers. Having made the observation that persons with fructose malabsorption very often seem to present not only with signs of irritable bowel syndrome but also with signs of pre-menstrual syndrome and mental depression, it was of interest to establ

TEMPS-I: delineating the most discriminant traits of the cyclothymic, depressive, hyperthymic and irritable temperaments in a nonpatient population.

BACKGROUND: Although most personality constructs have been standardized in population studies, cyclothymic, depressive, irritable and hyperthymic temperaments putatively linked to mood disorders have been classically derived from clinical observations. METHODS: We therefore administered the semi-structured affective temperament schedule of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego, Interview version (TEMPS-I) -- in its original University of Tennessee operationalization -- to 1010 Italian students aged between 14 and 26. The interview, administered in a randomized format, took 20 min per subject. R

Cannabidiol Induced Manic Episode: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating compound derived from Cannabis sativa, has gained widespread popularity for its proposed therapeutic effects in conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is often perceived as safe, with minimal psychoactive properties. However, its psychiatric safety profile, particularly in relation to mood disorders, remains poorly understood. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 31-year-old male with no prior psychiatric history who developed a manic episode characterized by irritability, decreased

Age differences in the phenomenology of pediatric bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of this study was to explore whether age differences in the phenomenology of bipolar disorders from 4 to 17 years of age exist. METHODS: Outcome measures included questionnaires pertaining to mood symptoms, psychosocial functioning, and family history of psychiatric illness. Phenomenology was examined in two diagnostic groups: syndromal bipolar disorder (bipolar I or II) and subsyndromal bipolar disorder (bipolar disorder not otherwise specified or cyclothymia) and across six age cohorts: 4-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-13, and 14-17 years. Symptoms of anxiety and depression in informal caregivers of persons with dementia: a latent profile analysis and computer-simulated network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Most informal caregivers of persons with dementia suffer from symptoms of anxiety and depression, but there is still a lack of clear optimal intervention targets for this group. This study aims to explore the interrelationships between symptoms of anxiety and depression among informal caregivers of persons with dementia, identifying key symptoms to provide a scientific basis for developing precise mental health prevention and intervention strategies. METHODS: This study utilized a cross-sectional design. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 were

Irritable bowel syndrome based on Rome IV diagnostic criteria associates with non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent concepts suggest that the neuropathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD) may in part originate from the enteric nervous system. We evaluated the frequency of functional gastrointestinal disorders in PD patients using Rome IV criteria and correlated the clinical severity of PD. METHODS: PD patients and matched controls were recruited between January 2020 and December 2021. Rome IV criteria were used to diagnose constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Severity of PD motor symptoms was evaluated using UPDRS part III scores and non-motor symptoms using Non-moto

[Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder: a controversial new diagnostic entity in the DSM-5].

The Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) was included for the first time in the 5th Revision of the DSM. A transatlantic controversy surrounding the clinical picture and prevalence of early-onset bipolar disorder gave the occasion to develop a new diagnostic category in the chapter “Depressive Disorders” capturing a behavioral phenotype of non-episodic, chronic irritability and frequent temper tantrums. The present paper reviews the first available studies applying the new criteria. While DMDD can be clearly distinguished from bipolar disorder, preliminary evidence suggests a strong o

Real-time emotional responses to trigger sounds in misophonia: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Although misophonia is characterized by intense negative emotional responses, the temporal dynamics of these experiences in naturalistic settings are poorly understood. This study utilized ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to characterize the real-time emotional experiences of adults with misophonia outside of laboratory settings. Forty adults with misophonia completed EMA surveys for 10 days. Results indicated that trigger sounds elicited significant elevations in negative emotions, particularly irritability and anger, compared to non-trigger periods. Although most emotional responses sub

The hierarchical structure and longitudinal measurement invariance of externalizing symptoms in the adolescent brain and cognitive development study.

Recent years have seen a shift toward alternative nosologies of psychopathology, which frequently include a dimension of externalizing psychopathology. The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology is one such framework. Research using data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study has identified a broad-based externalizing dimension, but no research to date has sought to empirically identify finer-grained externalizing subdimensions despite the research benefits associated with the use of homogenous dimensions. Furthermore, no work to date has examined whether externaliz
