A case of bowel perforation due to traumatic hernia at a pelvic fracture site: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Common complications of pelvic fractures include visceral injury, large-volume hemorrhage, genitourinary injury, rectal injury, … operation was thus immediately performed. We performed segmental jejunum resection and constructed jejunostomy, and the iliac bone fracture was fixed with four pins. In the postoperative course, she received antibiotics and vasopressors for septic shock. However, there was no need for either a ventilator, dialysis or admission to the ICU. At seven days after …

[What can we do to improve our management of intestinal atresia?].

OBJECTIVE: To review our management of intestinal atresia (AI). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective review of patientes with AI, from 1995 to 2011. RESULTS: AI was identified in 41 patients, 29,2% had maternal polyhydramnios and 48,7% were diagnosed prenatally. Four of them had Down Syndrome and 18 had cardiopathy. Duodenal atresia-stenosis (AD) was present in 21 patients, that were treated by 19 duodenoduodenostomy, 1 duodenojejunostomy and 1 duodenotomy with duodenal membrane resection. Jejunoileal atresia (AYI) was present in 20 patients and we performed 15 end to end anastomosis, 1 íle…

Autologous reconstruction of massive enteroatmospheric fistulation with a pedicled subtotal lateral thigh flap.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of massive contaminated abdominal wall defects associated with enteroatmospheric fistulation represents a technic … e area of 564·5 (204-792) cm2. Intestinal reconstruction was staged, with delayed closure of a loop jejunostomy. Median follow-up was 93·5 (10-174) weeks. RESULTS: Successful healing occurred in all patients, with no flap loss or gastrointestinal complications. One patient died from complications of sepsis unrelated to the surgical treatment. All surviving p …

[Surgical access routes in enteral nutrition].

There are many known routes of access to the digestive tract for enteral nutrition (EN) and significant advances have been made in recent ye … ic access should be considered in patients with a high risk of aspiration. Finally, needle catheter jejunostomy during interventions in the upper gastrointestinal tract is the ideal technique for initiating early EN. All these techniques continue to be valid and the choice of procedure will be determined by the patient's clinical status and the experience of …

Cholecystectomy alone is inadequate for treating forme fruste choledochal cyst: evidence from a rare but important case report.

Treatment of "forme fruste" choledochal cyst (FFCC) where pancreaticobiliary malunion (PBMU) is associated with minimal dilatation of the common bile duct (CBD) remains controversial. PBMU allows pancreaticobiliary reflux to occur, which causes complications such as recurrent pancreatitis and gallbladder cancer. Therefore, some surgeons opt to treat FFCC by cholecystectomy alone in order to prevent gallbladder cancer, with the result that pancreaticobiliary reflux could still occur. Our treatment of choice-excision of both the CBD and the gallbladder, followed by Roux-en-Y hepatico-jejunostomy…

Transjejunostomy Stent Placement in Patients With Malignant Small-Bowel Obstructions.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and safety of transjejunostomy stent placement in patients with malignant small-bowel obstructions (SBOs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three patients (age range, 20-81 years) who underwent transjejunostomy stent placement between March 2009 and December 2016 for one (n = 20) or two (n = 3) malignant SBOs from advanced abdominal and pelvic malignancies were included in our study. Percutaneous jejunostomy was created 30-100 cm upstream to malignant SBOs and was immediately followed by stent placement through the …

Lacticaseibacillus paracasei Bacteremia Associated With Probiotic Use in a Child With Hypoganglionosis: Case Report and Literature Review.

Probiotics are generally considered safe and used to improve intestinal function. Here, we report a Lacticaseibacillus paracasei bacteremia case in an 8-month-old girl administered probiotics containing L. paracasei after jejunostomy for hypoganglionosis. The patient had persistent bacteremia with L. paracasei and was treated with antimicrobial therapy. The isolate from the blood culture was genetically indistinguishable to the strain contained in probiotics. Bacteremia risk should be considered before probiotic use in patients with underlying compromised immune systems or intestinal integrity…

Amelanotic malignant melanoma of the cervical oesophagus.

We report the case of a young woman who presented with progressive dysphagia and swelling in the anterior aspect of the neck of short duration. On evaluation, she was diagnosed with amelanotic malignant melanoma of the cervical oesophagus. She underwent total laryngopharyngo-oesophagectomy with gastric transposition with bilateral modified radical neck dissection with feeding jejunostomy and a permanent tracheostomy with postoperative combined chemoradiation therapy. However, in spite of aggressive treatment, the patient expired 8 months after initial presentation with distant metastasis.

Postoperative adhesive intestinal obstruction: The role of intestinal stenting.

AIM: Six children with adhesive obstruction in the postoperative period were treated with stenting the small bowel with long intestinal tube. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In two children the stenting was done through jejunostomy, and in the other four through the base of appendix. RESULTS: During a follow-up period of 2-14 years, there had been no recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Use of an intraluminal tube stent in preventing recurrent small bowel obstruction due to adhesions is safe and effective when used on appropriately selected patients.
