Open injuries and obesity as emerging risk factors for vascular injury in knee dislocations: A retrospective study.

PURPOSE: Knee dislocations (KDs) are rare in orthopaedic trauma but can have devastating effects. Failing to diagnose a concomitant vascular injury can lead to amputation. Different methods are used for the diagnosis of a vascular injury and the best approach is under debate. This study aims to examine the risk factor(s) of vascular injury in patients with KDs, examine variables that differ between obese patients and non-obese patients with KDs, and analyse the modalities used to identify vascular injuries in the KD population. METHODS: The electronic patient medical record system at a major

The Influence of Meniscal and Anterolateral Capsular Injury on Knee Laxity in Patients With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries.

BACKGROUND: The role of the anterolateral capsule (ALC) as a secondary restraint to quantitative rotatory laxity of patients with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is currently debated. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to determine the influence of concomitant ALC injuries as well as injuries to other soft tissue structures on rotatory knee laxity in patients with an ACL injury. It was hypothesized that a concomitant ALC injury would be associated with increased rotatory knee laxity as measured during a quantitative pivot-shift test. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of

High risk of new knee injury in elite footballers with previous anterior cruciate ligament injury.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is a severe event for a footballer, but it is unclear if the knee injury rate is higher on returning to football after ACL injury. OBJECTIVE: To study the risk of knee injury in elite footballers with a history of ACL injury compared with those without. METHOD: The Swedish male professional league (310 players) was studied during 2001. Players with a history of ACL injury at the study start were identified. Exposure to football and all time loss injuries during the season were recorded prospectively. RESULTS: Twenty four players (8%) had a

Reliability of the knee muscle co-contraction index during gait in young adults with and without knee injury history.

Despite the frequent use of the electromyography-based muscle co-contraction index (CCI) to examine muscular control of the knee joint in young adults with and without knee injury history, the reliability of the CCI in this population is unknown. The purpose of this study was to quantify within-day and between-day reliability of the knee muscle CCI during gait in young adults with and without knee injury history. Twenty young adults (10 males, 10 females) with and without history of intra-articular knee injury performed repeated gait analyses on two different days. Surface electromyography of

Direct nerve suture and knee immobilization in 90° flexion as a technique for treatment of common peroneal, tibial and sural nerve injuries in complex knee trauma.

There are different ways to treat peripheral nerve injuries with concomitant defects in the lower extremity. One option is a direct nerve suture followed by immobilization of the knee in flexion as it is described for gunshot wounds that lead to lesions of the sciatic nerve and its terminal branches as well as isolated nerve lesions. We used this technique to treat a case of multiple nerve injuries of the lower extremity combined with a complex knee trauma including a lesion of both bones and the posterior capsule. To our knowledge, this technique has not yet been described for such a combined

Diagnosis and treatment of the most common neuropathies following knee injuries and reconstructive surgery - A narrative review.

The main nerves in the knee region are the tibial nerve, the common peroneal nerve, and the saphenous nerve. These three nerves innervate the lower leg and foot, providing sensory and motor function. The large sciatic nerve splits just above the knee to form the tibial and common peroneal nerves. The tibial nerve travels down in the posterior region, while the common peroneal nerve runs around the lateral side of the knee and runs down the front of the leg to the foot. Although all these nerves can be affected by injuries of the knee, the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve (IPBSN) and
