Clinical and laboratory profile of Zika virus infection in dengue suspected patients: A case series.

BACKGROUND: The Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging arthropod-borne virus related to the dengue virus (DENV), and shows a similar clinical profile as other arboviral diseases, such as dengue and chikungunya virus (CHIKV). Historically, ZIKV has been associated with sporadic cases of human infection, but is now responsible for outbreaks worldwide. In Brazil, cases have been reported since 2015, with some cases causing severe disease. OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical symptoms of Zika in patients in Dengue suspected patients. STUDY DESIGN: Description of a series of cases, wherein we analyzed 100 c

Genomic identification of human vaccinia virus keratoconjunctivitis and its importance as a laboratory-acquired infection.

CONTEXT: Vaccinia virus (VACV) is a member of orthopoxvirus genus of the family Poxviridae. VACVs are enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses. Several species of this family, for example, molluscum contagiosum, smallpox, deerpox, horsepox, rabbitpox, and VACVs may cause conjunctivitis. AIMS: Given the high incidence of keratoconjunctivitis in Iran (approximately 3.6%-53.9%) and insufficient clinical diagnostic measures, laboratory tests for detection of its causes and determination of accurate keratoconjunctivitis/conjunctivitis prevalence due to different pathogens are essential. SETTINGS AN

Impact of dengue virus (DENV) co-infection on clinical manifestations, disease severity and laboratory parameters.

BACKGROUND: The co-circulation of 4 DENV serotypes in geographically expanding area, has resulted in increasing occurrence of DENV co-infections. However, studies assessing the clinical impact of DENV co-infections have been scarce and have involved small number of patients. This study explores the impact of DENV co-infection on clinical manifestations and laboratory parameters. METHODS: This retrospective study involved consecutive hospitalized patients with non-structural protein 1 (NS1) antigen positivity during an outbreak (Jan to April 2014). Multiplex RT-PCR was performed directly on NS

Inter-laboratory assessment of a prototype multiplex kit for determination of recent HIV-1 infection.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and reliable laboratory-based assays are needed for estimating HIV-1 incidence from cross-sectional samples. We recently described the development of a customized, HIV-1-specific Bio-Plex assay that allows for the measurement of HIV-specific antibody levels and avidity to multiple analytes for improved HIV-1 incidence estimates. METHODS: To assess intra- and inter-laboratory assay performance, prototype multiplex kits were developed and evaluated by three distinct laboratories. Longitudinal seroconversion specimens were tested in parallel by each laboratory and kit perfor

Experimental yellow fever virus infection in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) III. Clinical laboratory values.

Using a recently described hamster model of yellow fever (YF), we compared the hematologic and clinical chemistry changes that occur in blood with the histopathologic alternations observed in liver and other organs. Inflammatory foci and necroapoptotic hepatocytes were first observed in the liver three days after YF infection. This was accompanied by a rapid increase in serum transaminase and bilirubin values, elevation of prothrombin times, thrombocytopenia, and leukocytosis. Maximum liver pathology was observed on the sixth and seventh days post-infection; this corresponded to the peak alter

[Comparative analysis of methods for laboratory diagnosis of Lyme's disease in early stages of infection].

Different methods of laboratory diagnostics were comparatively analyzed in examining 25 patients at the early infection stage. Sera were measured by using various serological reactions. Specific antibodies were determined by using the reaction of indirect immune-fluorescence (RIIF), the immune-enzyme analysis (IEA) and the complement-binding reaction (CBR) in 83.1%, 54.4% and 12.5% of cases, respectively. Essential differences in sensitivity were detected between the above methods. RIIF was proven to be a reliable and sufficiently sensitive method in the laboratory diagnostics of Lyma's diseas

Immunization of laboratory animals with ultraviolet-attenuated larvae against homologous challenge infection with Trichinella britovi.

Immunogenicity of Trichinella britovi (Japanese isolate, cord ISS 408) muscle larvae irradiated with 5 mJ/cm2 of short wavelength ultraviolet (UV) was studied using homologous challenge infections. SCID mice vaccinated with UV-attenuated larvae showed no resistance, although its congenic CB-17 mice exhibited remarkable immunity. Following challenge vaccinated Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, did not show significant immunity. Use of these animal models vaccinated with UV-attenuated larvae will contribute to the investigation of immune mechanisms against Trichinella infection and also

Murine lymphocytic choriomeningitis: the history of a natural cross-infection from wild to laboratory mice.

A new locus of wild house mice tolerantly infected with the virus of lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) has been identified in the United Kingdom. Evidence is presented which indicates that these mice were the source of infection in a laboratory mouse breeding colony, the mode of transmission probably being bites on tails and limbs exposed through wire-grid flooring. The results of an experiment which simulated indirect exposure of SPF mice to tolerantly infected wild mice supported earlier observations that without injury to the epidermis the risk of spread of infection from the infective uri

Differences between laboratory strains of Epstein-Barr virus based on immortalization, abortive infection and interference.

Biological activities of extracellular Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) from two laboratory strains, namely P3J-HR-1 (P-H) from Burkitt's lymphoma and B95-8 (B95) from infectious mononucleosis, were compared. Virus stocks from both sources contained approximately the same number of virions. Virus from the P-H line induced early antigen in six non-producer EBV-genome carrier cell lines; virus from B95 did not induce early antigen. Extracellular virus from B95 regularly caused lymphocytes from human umbilical cords to form continuous lines (immortalization); P-H virus did not cause primary cultures of h

Preventing laboratory-acquired Toxoplasma gondii infection: literature review and case-based post-exposure prophylaxis proposal.

Occupationally acquired cases of the intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii have been reported, even though there is uncertainty on which infection prevention measures should be implemented in such event. We report a clinical case of laboratory-acquired toxoplasmosis and propose a protocol for post-exposure prophylaxis, given there are no formal guidelines. In this community case study, we describe the management and prevention protocol following an occupational laboratory exposure by a healthy 30-year-old Toxoplasma-seronegative female researcher who suffered an accidental needle puncture w
