Studies of brain asymmetry in dyslexia have yielded mixed results both with respect to patterns of asymmetry and their cognitive correlates. This paper assessed language lateralisation inferred from dichotic listening with forced attention in a clinical group of young dyslexic subjects. As a whole the dyslexic group showed a deviant asymmetry pattern compared to a control group. This is a retrospective study of data collected on an information system, developed specifically for the use of speech and language therapists and used by eleven health care providers since 1985. Information prior to 1987 contain the artefacts of new technology and backload logging. Thus this paper reflects data from 1987 to 1995. OBJECTIVE: To examine language and behavior in children with Sotos syndrome, an overgrowth syndrome involving advanced bone age, characteristic facies, and developmental disability.
METHOD: Twenty-seven children with Sotos syndrome were compared with 20 children with overgrowth, intellectual disability, and facies not characteristic of Sotos syndrome. Complex segregation analysis was performed on pedigrees ascertained through 45 probands (26 males, 19 females) with a history of preschool speech and language disorders. Hypotheses concerning mode of inheritance were tested using the POINTER segregation analysis program.
