Toxocariasis is a parasitic zoonosis with worldwide distribution that affects both cats and dogs. This parasite is one of the factors contributing to visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans in humans. Therefore, it is crucial to gain a good understanding of how cats are infected by T. cati, so as to prevent citizens from infection. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of T. cati in Isfahan. In 2014-2015, a total of 147 feacal samples were collected from urban stray cats. The felid feaces were analyzed through PCR test and 26 cats (17.7%) were diagnosed with T. cati gene. Sixteen …

The radiological and clinical features of 41 cases of acute gastric anisakiasis, a form of visceral larva migrans caused by eating poorly cooked fish containing Anisakis larvae, are reviewed. The most important radiological finding, present in 31 patients (76%), was the demonstation of a thread-like filling defect approximately 30 mm long. Suggestive but indeterminate findings such as coarse, broad gastric folds due to mucosal edema were demonstrated in 10 patients (24%). In no case was the radiological examination negative. Once the presence of this larva is suspected, it can often be demonst…

B. transfuga larvae migrated in livers, lungs and brains of experimentally infected mice. B. transfuga larvae have never been reported as etiologic agents of visceral larva migrans, but our results show that they have a migration in experimental paratenic hosts of a type that suggests their possible role in this syndrome.

Toxocariasis, a common helminthozoonosis with a worldwide prevalence, usually manifests as 'visceral larva migrans' (VLM). Among its wide range of clinical presentations, large vessel thrombosis has never been described before. We report a case of aortic thrombosis caused by Toxocara canis infection in a young male who was successfully treated with albendazole.

A case report of a cutaneous larva migrans caused by the nematode, Gnathostoma spinigerum, in which the worm was visualized at surgery and successfully removed, is presented. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second case of documented subcutaneous gnathostomiasis in the Western Hemisphere and the first in the upper extremity.

Larva migrans syndromes are rare affections that occur mainly in young children. The usual parasite involved is Toxocara canis, its presence in humans leading to encystment of the larvae and an eosinophilic granulomatous reaction. A case of an adult with this affection is reported, and clinical aspects and diagnostic and therapeutic problems discussed.

Although human toxocariasis ranks among the most common zoonotic infections worldwide, it remains relatively unknown to the public. The caus … fections are asymptomatic, two well-defined clinical syndromes are classically recognised: visceral larva migrans (a systemic disease caused by larval migration through major organs) and ocular larva migrans (a disease limited to the eyes and optic nerves). Two less-severe syndromes have recently been described, one mainly in children (covert toxocariasis) and …

The genus Toxocara contains parasitic nematodes of human and animal health significance, such as Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati and Toxocara vitulorum. T. canis and T. cati are among the most prevalent parasites of dogs and cats with a worldwide distribution. Human infection with T. canis and T. cati, which can cause a number of clinical manifestations such as visceral larva migrans (VLMs), ocular larva migrans (OLMs), eosinophilic meningoencephalitis (EME), covert toxocariasis (CT) and neurotoxocariasis, is considered the most prevalent neglected helminthiasis in industrialized countries. The …

We performed a serological survey of Toxocara canis infection in junior high school students from three districts in northern Sulawesi. Almost all of the 117 subjects from two rural districts near Manado allowed dogs in their houses, and there was an 84.6% prevalence of T. canis infection in this group. Fifty-three subjects (45.3%) had serum samples with a high titer of specific anti-Toxocara antibody. By contrast, 41 students tested in one urban district showed a 12.2% prevalence. To confirm the clinical symptoms of visceral larva migrans (VML) and ocular larva migrans (OLM) caused by Toxocar…

Toxocara canis and T. cati are not only ubiquitously distributed parasites of dogs, foxes and cats, but may also infest humans, causing a great variety of symptoms and sometimes also severe diseases: the visceral larva migrans syndrome, the ocular larva migrans syndrome, covert toxocarosis, common toxocarosis, neurological toxocarosis, and some other clinical pictures (asthma bronchiale, epilepsy, rheumatoid arthritis) are considered to be induced by Toxocara species. Both Toxocara species are also widely distributed in Austrian dog, fox and cat populations; seroepidemiological studies carried…

Australian physicians may encounter a number of tropical skin diseases. Migrants or visitors may travel here with a skin disease, or people living in the tropical or subtropical regions of Australia may develop skin conditions. The most important of these are cutaneous leishmaniasis, cutaneous amoebiasis, tinea imbricata, favus, sporotrichosis, chromomycosis, cutaneous tuberculosis, Buruli ulcer, cutaneous larva migrans and dracontiasis.

We describe the case of a patient with infestation of the liver by visceral larva migrans as the sole manifestation of the disease. The difficulties in the diagnosis if no other organs are affected is stressed. The diagnosis is made by ultrasound and CAT scan and serological tests by ELISA. Tiabendazol is the treatment of choice.

Phytophotodermatitis is a common cutaneous phototoxic reaction produced by contact with a variety of plant substances, followed by sunlight exposure. Phytophotodermatits can simulate child abuse, impetigo, superficial lymphangitis, and larva migrans. The most frequent presentation is hyperpigmentation of the dorsum of the hands, but there are other less common findings such as blisters or lesions mimicking solar lentigines and melasma.

The case of a patient with thoracic abdominal and left arm, migratory erythema-edematous plates over a space of three years is described. The histopathologic features reveal a eosinophilic panniculitis due to probable larva migrans (gnathostomiasis). This appears to be the first report on the subject because we have not found any reference to the subject in Argentina bibliographic search.

Thorough epidemiologic investigations of wildlife mortality events are often challenging, in part because of the dynamic variables involved. In May 2011, six fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) in Clinton State Park, Kansas, US were euthanized after exhibiting clinical signs of neurologic disease. Postmortem examination of two squirrels revealed that these individuals died of Baylisascaris larva migrans, which resulted in meningoencephalitis and variable pneumonia and myocarditis. Fecal flotation of raccoon (Procyon lotor) feces collected in the area revealed Baylisascaris sp. ova, presumably Baylis…

Toxocariasis is one of the most commonly reported zoonotic helminth infections in the world with a higher prevalence in tropical settings and in rural populations. It is caused by the larval stages of the ascarids Toxocara canis, the common roundworm of dogs, and probably also by the larval stages of Toxocara cati, the roundworm of cats. The clinical spectrum of toxocariasis in humans varies from asymptomatic infection to severe organ injury caused by larval migration to the major organs ("visceral larva migrans"). Clinical involvement of the nervous system in visceral larva migrans due to Tox…
