[Development of a lower limb model for the study of accident sequelae of vehicle-pedestrian collisions].

A major goal of the development and associated experimental investigation of car bumpers is the minimization of injuries in car-to-pedestrian collisions. Because the lower leg is particularly prone to injuries in a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian, a lower leg model has been developed that makes it possible to simulate most of the processes occurring during an injury. In cooperation with the Institut für Biomedizinische Technik (Institute for Biomedical Technology) of the University of Stuttgart and the Kunststofflabor des Fachbereiches für Produktionstechnik (Institute for Product

Patterns of knee injuries in wrestling: a six year study.

Data on knee injuries sustained by the University of Iowa wrestling team over a 6 year period were compiled. There were a total of 136 wrestlers during this time. Fifty-one different wrestlers sustained 136 injuries (64 knees). Multiple parameters were examined for each injury, including date of injury; days lost; diagnosis; side injured; mechanism; occurrence during competition or practice; whether the wrestler was in control, "on the bottom," or both wrestlers standing; type of move being made at the time of injury; how far into a match or practice the injury happened; initial versus recurre

Evaluation of static and dynamic balance in athletes with anterior cruciate ligament injury - A controlled study.

OBJECTIVES: Anterior cruciate ligament injury leads to adaptive responses to maintain postural control. However, there is no consensus regarding whether leg dominance also affects postural control in athletes with anterior cruciate ligament injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate dynamic and static postural control among athletes with and without anterior cruciate ligament injury to the dominant leg. METHODS: Twenty-eight athletes, twenty-one males and seven females aged 15-45 years, were allocated to one of two groups: the anterior cruciate ligament injury group (26±3 years) or the

Trunk endurance, posterior chain flexibility, and previous history of musculoskeletal pain predict overuse low back and lower extremity injury: a prospective cohort study of 545 Navy Cadets.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate predictors of low back and lower extremity musculoskeletal injury in a cohort of Naval cadets. DESIGN: Prospective Cohort Study METHODS: 545 Naval cadets (Males, n = 394, 72%) were followed-up over eight months. Nine variables were investigated as predictors: history of musculoskeletal symptoms in the last 12 months, ankle dorsiflexion range of motion, sit and reach test, isometric hip abduction and external rotation strength, alignment during the single leg squat test, single leg hop test for distance, prone plank and side plank tests. All injuries that required med

Does posterior tibial slope laterality exist? A matched cohort study between ACL-injured and non-injured knees.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine 1) the degree and frequency of laterality in posterior tibial slope (PTS) with control and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury groups and 2) the laterality of PTS between sides of injury and dominant legs in patients with primary ACL injuries. METHODS: A total of 187 consecutive patients with clinically diagnosed noncontact ACL injuries and an age- and sex-matched 1:1 control group were identified. PTS was measured using three different methods (aPTS = anterior PTS, mPTS = middle PTS, pPTS = posterior PTS) on a lateral knee radiograph. PTS

The Association Between History of an Ankle Sprain and Traumatic Meniscal Injury Among Infantry Combat Soldiers in the Israeli Defense Forces: A Historical Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: The high frequency and number of ankle inversion injuries and meniscal injuries in military populations is an area of concern … Our main conclusion from the results of this study is that the assumption that those with previous leg injuries are at a greater risk for further leg injuries is questionable and cannot be generalized. Hence, the association between different types of injuries should be investigated separately.

Injuries and overuse injuries in padel tennis: a retrospective epidemiological cross-sectional study of a level 1 trauma center in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Padel tennis is a trend sport. The sport promises a good workout with low physical demands for people of all ages and physical conditions. It is therefore of great interest to understand the sport better and to be aware of possible injuries and overuse injuries in padel tennis. This could result in possible preventative measures, such as increased education on adapting training and assistance for treating and supervising doctors and medical staff. METHODS: A total of 411 padel tennis players of all levels answered a retrospective questionnaire about injuries and overuse damage whi

Injuries to pitchers in women's collegiate fast-pitch softball.

An injury survey of eight college softball teams ranked among the top 15 during the 1989 women's NCAA tournament championship by their athletic trainers found 26 injuries and complaints in 20 of 24 players. There were 15 grade I (nontime-loss) injuries, all musculotendinous except for a leg contusion and an ankle sprain. The 6 grade II injuries (altered play) were also musculotendinous except for 2 sprains to the hand and wrist. The 5 grade III (stopped play) injuries were somewhat more varied in type and resulted in an average of almost 7 weeks of time lost per injured player. Eighty-two perc

[Snow-boarding injuries can be prevented].

The last four winter seasons have witnessed a dramatic increase in the popularity of snowboarding. A series of snowboarding injuries treated at University Hospital, Umeå, predominantly consisted of those sustained by teenage boys, often when jumping or losing balance for other reasons. The upper extremities were the most common sites of injury, 2/3 of these injuries being fractures. The commonest type of lower extremity injury was sprain, and 2/3 of lower extremity injuries affected the foremost leg. To prevent injuries, it is recommended that snowboard bindings should be modified by the intro

A survey of running injuries in 1505 competitive and recreational runners.

A 33 item multiple choice questionnaire was circulated; completed questionnaires from 1505 runners (1130 male and 375 female) were obtained. Questions focused upon training, injuries sustained, and medical care. Biomechanical imbalances such as leg length inequality appear to be a major contributing factor to running injuries. Correction of an underlying biomechanical defect may be important in the treatment of many running injuries. Female runners were found to be more susceptible than males to stress fractures at higher mileages. The cause of this increased incidence may be attributable to l

Longitudinal assessments of balance and jump-landing performance before and after anterior cruciate ligament injuries in collegiate athletes.

The purpose was to quantify the effect of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on balance and jump-landing performance and bilateral asymmetries. Among 500 collegiate athletes who performed a reaching test and a double-leg counter-movement jump-landing test at baseline, 8 male and 6 female athletes suffered ACL injuries. In the follow-up, they performed the reaching test 3 and 6 months after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and the jump-landing test 6 months after ACLR. Less reaching distances for the injured leg and increased reaching distance asymmetries were observed 3 and 6 months after ACL

Vertical deceleration injuries.

Six patients simultaneously sustained vertical deceleration injuries. Vertical deceleration injuries are serious and characteristically involve major weight bearing structures with forces transmitted through the foot, leg, pelvis and vertebral column. Injuries of the lower extremity are likely to be unilateral and comminuted because the force of deceleration is applied to a small area. The severity of the injury increases by increasing the rate of deceleration and decreasing the distance through which the body is decelerated. More severe injury occurs when deceleration forces are applied to th

Spinal Cord Infarction as an Immediate Complication of Spinal Cord Stimulator Placement.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulators (SCSs) are a widely used intervention for managing chronic neuropathic conditions. SCSs are considered safe, but rare complications can arise, typically attributed to spinal cord compression or contusion. Spinal cord infarction as a complication of SCS placement has not been previously reported in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 76-year-old woman developed spinal cord infarction resulting in right leg paralysis following SCS placement. Immediately postprocedure, there was bilateral lower extremity paralysis with partial recovery of the left leg but persisten

Cross-over replantation after bilateral traumatic lower-leg amputation: a case report with a six-year follow-up.

A suicidal 66-year-old female patient was run over by a train. The lower extremities were amputated at different levels. On the right side, there was a complete amputation in the distal third of the lower leg. Proximal to the amputation site, there was an extensive soft-tissue and bone defect. On the left side, there was a crush injury of the tarsus and mid-tarsal bones. The left lower leg showed only minimal injuries. An ipsilateral (anatomic) replantation was not possible. In order to save one lower extremity, a cross-over (contralateral) replantation of the right foot to the left lower leg

Distal lower leg local random fasciocutaneous flaps.

Significant open wounds of the distal third of the lower leg that require some form of vascularized flap have historically been covered with distant cross-leg flaps or more appropriately with microsurgical tissue transfers. The rediscovery of the "random" fasciocutaneous flap as a reliable single-stage option for proximal lower leg defects has been extended distally to allow an expedient alternative in lieu of these more complicated procedures. Over the past 7 years, 17 selected patients had closure of distal leg and ankle wounds with 19 local antegrade-oriented fasciocutaneous flaps. All even

A retrospective comparison of the biceps femoris long head muscle structure in athletes with and without hamstring strain injury history.

INTRODUCTION: Hamstring strain injuries (HSI) and re-injuries are endemic in high-speed running sports. The biceps femoris long head (BFlh) is the most frequently injured muscle among the hamstrings. Structural parameters of the hamstring muscle are stated to be susceptible to strain injuries at this location. This retrospective study targeted comparing the BFlh's structural parameters between previously injured and uninjured athletes. METHODS: Nineteen male athletes with previous BFlh strain injury history and nineteen athletes without former lower extremity injury history were included in t

Sport-specific injuries and medical problems of figure skaters.

Figure skating is becoming increasingly popular as both a recreational and competitive sport. As the number of figure skating participants increases, so will the number of active patients who present to their primary care physician with sport-related injuries and medical problems. Figure skating is a unique sport that continues to evolve and progress with participants partaking in more difficult moves and more rigorous training programs. Common problems in figure skating include acute musculo-skeletal injuries and chronic overuse injuries, which primarily occur in the foot, ankle, knee, leg, h
