OBJECTIVE: Young males with lichen sclerosus (LS) commonly present with phimosis; complete urinary obstruction has also been described in this population, but is much rarer. We present the case report of a boy with acute renal failure secondary to urethral obstruction caused by LS, with a review of the literature regarding the occurrence of complete urinary obstruction and renal failure associated with this disease process.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted using MEDLINE and EMBASE to characterize the association of lichen sclerosus with significant

Lichen aureus is a rare type of chronic pigmented purpuric dermatosis. The eruptions consist of discrete or confluent golden to brownish lichenoid macules and papules, and are usually asymptomatic. Lichen aureus commonly occurs in young adults, but less frequently in children. We report the first case of multiple lichen aureus occurring in a Korean child.

Lichen planus is a unique but common inflammatory disorder that affects the skin, mucous membranes, nails and hair. Oral lichen planus (OLP) is among the more common mucosal conditions a clinician is likely to encounter in his or her practice. The etiology is unknown. Immunofluorescence studies have provided some insight into a proposed immunopathogenesis. Buccal mucosa, tongue and gingiva are more commonly involved. The question of malignant transformation of OLP remains controversial. Management of lichen planus can be challenging and discouraging for both the patient and physician. Treatmen

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin and mucous membranes. Typically, skin lesions include violaceous, polygonal, flat papules and plaques. However, the clinical presentation of lichen planus can be heterogeneous and show divergent degrees of cutaneous and mucous manifestation. The disease usually affects adults and is only rarely encountered in children. Here, we present a 7-year-old boy who rapidly developed itching skin lesions on the extremities and trunk. He had no history of concomitant drug intake, infection or vaccination. Clinical examination of the skin found m

We report lichen amyloidosis occurring on the upper lip and nasolabial folds of a 61-year-old woman from Singapore. She had a past history of systemic lupus erythematosus, which was in remission for three years. There had been no lesions of lupus erythematosus in this area. Clinically, the lesions were skin-coloured, firm papules and our differential diagnoses included trichoepithelioma, papular sarcoid or lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei. Skin biopsy from one of the lesions showed amyloid deposits in the dermis which were Congo red stain positive. These deposits also showed apple green bire

Lichen planus pemphigoides is a clinico-histological subtype of lichen planus in which there are bullous lesions similar to those of bullous pemphigoid. Lichen planus is included among the rare causes of erythroderma. We present a case of erythrodermic lichen planus pemphigoides in a 49-year-old female patient who satisfactorily responded to treatment with cyclosporine. A detailed physical examination and immunofluorescence study are key to the diagnosis of lichen planus pemphigoides.

UNLABELLED: Lichen sclerosus in urological practice.
INTRODUCTION: Lichen sclerosus is a sclerosing, inflammatory skin disease with unknown origin which causes secondary phimosis of the foreskin and stricture of the urethra. In the case of long term existence of it the prevalence of intraepithelial squamous cell neoplasia is increased.
AIM: To identify the role of lichen sclerosus in adulthood phimosis and to categorize urological treatment. To define the proper therapy of lichen sclerosus, causing meatal and urethral stricture. To measure the incidence of lichen sclerosus in patients with s

We describe a new case of annular atrophic lichen planus. Annular atrophic lichen planus is a rare variant of lichen planus that is clinically characterized by violaceous plaques of annular morphology with central atrophy and histopathologic findings of annular and atrophic lichen planus, respectively. There have been 4 cases of this entity reported previously.

Oral lichen planus is rare in childhood, and only a few reports on this subject have appeared in the literature. Our objective was to report individual cases of oral lichen planus in childhood from our practice and to review the literature on this subject. We recruited patients younger than 18 years with oral lichen planus and documented several clinical aspects, the histopathology, patch tests, and blood examination findings. Three patients from about 10,000 dermatology patients younger than 18 years seen from 1994 to 2003 were included. Of these three, an Asian girl aged 11 years had an asym

BACKGROUND: A review of the English literature since 1940 did not reveal a reported case of lichen sclerosus involving the vaginal mucosa. Diagnosis of lichen sclerosus involving the vagina must thus be a rare occurrence.
CASE: This report presents the findings on a 54-year-old white woman with a history of lichen sclerosus involving the vulva. She was found to have lichen sclerosus involving the vaginal mucosa extending to the posterior vaginal fornix. The patient was started on the use of topical clobetasol ointment 0.05% to the vulva to be used twice daily for 1 month, at bedtime for 2 mon

Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory muco-cutaneous disease. Since disorders of NK-cell functional activity could be observed in patients with LP, it is considered to be an autoimmune disease. The pathogenesis of LP is complex and not completely understood. The involvement of mucous membranes is frequently seen, usually asymptomatic, but occasionally complicated by extensive painful erosions, causing a considerable loss of quality of life. Patients with symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP) often require intensive therapy to reduce the signs and symptoms of this painful and disabling in
