A postal survey was carried out to identify nursery school children with frequent nightmares in an English city. Of the 22 children reported as suffering from frequent nightmares, 14 came from families who were willing to be interviewed further. A control group with no nightmares, matched for age and sex, was selected from the returns. The mothers of the children in the two groups were interviewed using the Preschool Behaviour Checklist and a life events scale. The results showed that neither life events nor behaviour problems were more prevalent in the frequent nightmares group.

The life of Vincent van Gogh is illustrative of the natural history of psychosocial stressors and their relationship to a person's states of health and disease. In the author's opinion, there is a lack of such understanding in the current, established criteria for psychosocial stressors in the diagnosis of adjustment disorder. By use of a life chart, which chronologically documents a person's major life events and concomitant health status over his or her life span, a fuller understanding can be reached regarding why an individual becomes ill at a particular time.

In order to study the impact of the menopause and hysterectomy in relation to other life events, a study was carried out in Belgium in a random sample of 510 women over 18 yr of age. Twenty inpatients suffering from major depressive illness with melancholia were administered the hostility subscale of the Kellner Symptom Questionnaire and Paykel's Clinical Interview for Depression before and after treatment with amitriptyline. The role of depressive self-schemas in vulnerability to depression was explored in a longitudinal design. One hundred adolescents with chest pain were prospectively analyzed to determine the etiology, functional consequences, and illness attributions of patients seen in a general pediatric clinic. Serum specimens from 46 patients with JRA were tested for measles CF, HI, HLI, and RNP-GP antibodies, for rubella HI antibodies, and for adenovirus and herpes simplex virus CF antibodies. The mean antibody titres of the 16 JRA patients of the major conflict group (14) were generally higher than those of the 30 patients of the non-conflict group, although the differences do not reach the level of statistical significance. The interrelationships between life stress, emotions and immunological changes in JRA are discussed.
