Interfacial microenvironments enable abiotic ribonucleoside formation in micro- and nanoscale compartments.

The abiotic emergence of ribonucleosides remains a central challenge in origin-of-life research because ribonucleosides form inefficiently and are often unstable under prebiotically plausible conditions. Here we show that interfacial microenvironments within aqueous micro- and nanoscale compartments containing D-ribose, phosphoric acid, and nucleobases promote ribonucleoside formation by creating reaction-permissive physicochemical conditions independent of the specific compartment type. Across a diverse range of compartmentalized systems, including gas-oil-water micro/nanobubbles, gas-water m

The Glia Response after Peripheral Nerve Injury: A Comparison between Schwann Cells and Olfactory Ensheathing Cells and Their Uses for Neural Regenerative Therapies.

The peripheral nervous system (PNS) exhibits a much larger capacity for regeneration than the central nervous system (CNS). One reason for this difference is the difference in glial cell types between the two systems. PNS glia respond rapidly to nerve injury by clearing debris from the injury site, supplying essential growth factors and providing structural support; all of which enhances neuronal regeneration. Thus, transplantation of glial cells from the PNS is a very promising therapy for injuries to both the PNS and the CNS. There are two key types of PNS glia: olfactory ensheathing cells (

Inorganic nitrogen reduction and stability under simulated hydrothermal conditions.

Availability of reduced nitrogen is considered a prerequisite for the genesis of life from prebiotic precursors. Most atmospheric and oceanic models for the Hadean Earth predict a mildly oxidizing environment that is conducive to the formation and stability of only oxidized forms of nitrogen. A possible environment where reduction of oxidized nitrogen to ammonium has been speculated to occur is aqueous hydrothermal systems. We examined a suite of transition metal oxides and sulfides for their ability to reduce nitrate and nitrite, as well as oxidize ammonia, under hot (300 degrees C) high-pres

Empowering community volunteers improves the well-being of family caregivers of musculoskeletal disorder patients: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders cause major global disability and strain caregivers' mental health. In China, aging and limited rehabilitation amplify this burden. Empowering community volunteers through structured training may provide emotional and practical support to family caregivers, yet its effectiveness for MSK caregiving remains insufficiently studied. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a coal-mining community. Eighty-eight family caregivers were randomly assigned to an intervention group, which received regular home visits from trained community volun

Human breath as a carbon dioxide source for organic synthesis.

The capture and utilization of low-concentration CO2 as a C1 feedstock for organic synthesis have emerged as important research areas. Although atmospheric CO2 is an ideal carbon source for sustainable organic transformations, its extremely low concentration (0.04%) presents a significant challenge to the development of efficient CO2 conversion processes. In this context, we turned our attention to human breath as an alternative CO2 source, which contains approximately 4% CO2. The capture and utilization of CO2 from human breath is also expected to play an important role in sustaining life in

Beyond Bars: Evaluating End-of-Life Care and Surrogate Decision-Making for Hospitalized Incarcerated Persons.

Incarcerated persons (IPs) retain the constitutional right to health care, yet they face unique challenges in accessing palliative care (PC) and designating surrogates, especially when incapacitated. We present two cases of hospitalized IPs with life-limiting illnesses who experienced significant barriers in identifying and engaging surrogates. Both cases underscore the effect of delays in communication with surrogates and restricted end-of-life (EOL) visitation due to correctional policies. These delays limited the delivery of optimal interdisciplinary PC and bereavement support. Despite clea

Maternal separation increases later immobility during forced swim in guinea pig pups: evidence for sensitization of a depressive-like state.

Early-life stress is thought to increase later vulnerability for developing depressive illness by sensitizing underlying stress-responsive systems. Guinea pig pups separated from their mother and isolated in a novel cage for 3 hr exhibit a sensitized depressive-like behavioral response when separated again the following day as well as weeks later. The behavioral response and its sensitization appear to be mediated by inflammatory factors. To determine if this sensitization is specific to the separation response or if it reflects a broader underlying depressive-like state, guinea pig pups that

Evaluating quality of life changes in patients with cleft lip or palate: a mixed method pre- and postsurgical analysis in Karachi.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) is the most common orofacial congenital disability, presenting significant medical, psychological, and social challenges. In Pakistan, the incidence of CLP is high, estimated at one in 523 live births, but accurate data are lacking due to the absence of a birth registry. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for improving outcomes. This study evaluated the impact of CLP on patients' quality of life in Karachi, comparing pre- and post-surgical phases. METHODS: A sequential exploratory quantitative-qualitative mixed-methods study was conducted at

Post-translational modification networks as master regulators of influenza virus replication, host adaptation, and immune evasion.

Influenza viruses remain major global health threats due to their rapid evolution and complex interactions with host regulatory systems. While genetic variation is a key driver of viral pathogenicity and host adaptation, growing evidence indicates that post-translational modifications (PTMs) provide an additional regulatory layer that can influence viral replication, immune evasion, and metabolic remodeling. In this review, we synthesize current knowledge on how coordinated PTM networks, including phosphorylation, ubiquitination, SUMOylation, glycosylation, acetylation, lipidation, and RNA met

Perseveration on suicidal thoughts and images in daily life: An examination of the cognitive model of suicide through a dynamic systems lens.

According to the cognitive model of suicide, interactions between hopelessness and attentional biases toward suicidal information create a narrowed attentional focus on suicide as a viable solution, particularly in the presence of life stress, leading to increased suicide risk. This study used a dynamic systems approach to examine the short-term temporal patterns between stress, hopelessness, suicide-specific rumination, and suicidal intent. Adults (N = 237; M = 27.12 years; 62% cisgender women; 87% White/European American) with elevated suicidal ideation completed ecological momentary assessm
