The AcMYB15-AcWRKY24 module coordinates lignin and salicylic acid accumulation during kiwifruit resistance to bacterial canker.

Plants coordinate phenylpropanoid metabolism across different tissues to defend against pathogens, but the underlying transcriptional mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we identify the kiwifruit transcription factor AcMYB15 as a regulator that lignin deposition and salicylic acid (SA) accumulation, conferring bacterial canker resistance in kiwifruit through a tissue-specific regulatory module during  Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) infection. In leaves, AcMYB15 directly binds to the CAACCC motif in the AcPAL1 promoter to activate its transcription, promoting localized lignin accumulati

Process-Decoupled Operando Molecular Characterization of Liquid-Phase Lignin Depolymerization by Online High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry.

As an abundant, renewable aromatic resource, lignin remains underutilized due to its complex and recalcitrant structure. Molecular-level elucidation of liquid-phase catalytic depolymerization of technical lignin is further hindered by structural heterogeneity and limited accessibility of intermediates under high-pressure conditions. Herein, a decoupled double-bed flow-through reactor integrated with online high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) is employed to investigate the catalytic depolymerization of alkali Kraft lignin. Spatial separation of thermal solvolysis and catalytic hydrogenolys

Transcriptional control of bacterial lignin funneling through regulator-ligand grammars and engineering strategies for chemical production.

Lignin is the largest renewable reservoir of aromatic carbon, but its microbial valorization is constrained by the chemical heterogeneity and changing composition of lignin-derived feedstocks. Although numerous aromatic-catabolic pathways and transcription factors have been characterized, their regulatory roles are usually discussed by protein family or individual pathway, obscuring the principles that govern pathway engagement under mixed-substrate conditions. Here, we present a mechanistic framework for bacterial lignin funneling organized around four axes: physiological effector identity, p

Bio-based dynamic network engineering of aminated lignin for strong, tough, and self-healing polyurea elastomers.

Achieving a favorable balance between mechanical robustness and room-temperature self-healing remains challenging for polyurea elastomers because network reinforcement often restricts the chain mobility required for repair. To improve this balance, this study has established a dual dynamic network in which Mannich-aminated lignin serves as a multifunctional reactive node within a disulfide-containing polyurea matrix. Compared with unmodified lignin, aminated lignin exhibits improved compatibility and participates in network formation, generating rigid reinforcing domains with abundant hydrogen

Towards Efficient Lignin Removal: A Box-Behnken Design Approach to Corncob Delignification Using Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Efficient pretreatment is essential for overcoming lignocellulosic biomass recalcitrance and enabling its use in biotechnological processes. In this study, corncob, an agricultural by-product rich in cellulose and hemicellulose, was subjected to acid pretreatment to remove hemicellulose and subsequently delignified using two deep eutectic solvent (DES) systems: choline chloride:urea and choline chloride:glycerol. The effect of temperature and reaction time was evaluated for both systems; ChCl:U was selected for optimization due to its superior lignin removal performance under the conditions ev

Valorizing wheat straw via TsOH/EG pretreatment: co-production of ethanol, furfural, and lignin-based surfactant.

Developing an environmentally friendly and efficient pretreatment method to achieve full-component utilization of biomass components (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) is essential for sustainable biorefining. The TsOH/EG system was applied to simultaneously fractionate the three major constituents, yielding excellent cellulose preservation along with high removal efficiencies for hemicellulose and lignin. Under optimal conditions (2.5 % TsOH (w/w), EG: H2O = 60:40 (v/v), 160 °C, 30 min), cellulose retention reached 90.99 %, with complete hemicellulose removal (100 %) and 60.59 % lignin re

Systematic investigation of solvent-dependent aggregation-induced emission in alkyl chain-bridged lignin-based amphiphilic polymers.

Aggregation governs the photophysical properties of fluorophores, particularly in aggregation-induced emission (AIE) systems, where emission efficiency is contingent upon regulated molecular packing. Lignin, as the most abundant renewable natural aromatic polymer, constitutes a sustainable scaffold for the development of AIE-active materials; however, its intrinsic potential in this field remains largely underexplored. Herein, two amphiphilic lignin derivatives, sulfomethylated lignin (SL) and alkyl chain-bridged lignin (ASL), were synthesized via a two-step sulfomethylation/alkyl-bridging str

Thermally-induced phase separation of alkali lignin into mesoscale pigments for rapid mordant-free cotton dyeing.

Industrial lignin is a promising sustainable textile colorant, but its weak adhesion to fibers limits practical use. Here we report a metal-free dyeing strategy based on mesoscale lignin pigments (MLPs) formed through thermally induced phase separation. Alkali lignin treated in 50% (v/v) ethanol-water at 200 °C underwent partial depolymerization and, upon cooling, reorganized into irregular ~4 μm flocs driven by hydrophobic interactions and π-π stacking. The resulting metastable suspension mobilized ~52% of the initial lignin and remained dyeing-active for ~24 h, with coarser flocs settling ou

Green bio-adhesives production from wheat straw lignin via deep eutectic solvent extraction and mild modification.

Traditional wood adhesives such as phenolic and urea-formaldehyde, which continuously release carcinogenic formaldehyde during production and use, seriously endanger human health and pollute the environment. Therefore, the development of high-performance bio-based adhesives without formaldehyde has become a research hotspot in the field of wood processing. This study developed a green and efficient strategy for preparing bio-based formaldehyde-free adhesives via deep eutectic solvent (DES)-assisted hydrothermal extraction of wheat straw lignin and its modification. The extraction process featu

Upcycling eucalyptus kraft lignin into fluorescent graphene quantum dots for reproductive cell imaging in aquaculture biotechnology.

The Kraft pulping industry produces significant amounts of lignin-rich black liquor, a largely underutilized renewable resource. We report a scalable method to synthesize lignin-derived graphene quantum dots from raw eucalyptus kraft black liquor (EL-GQDs) through sequential acid oxidation and hydrothermal carbonization. Structural and surface analyses confirm the formation of graphitic nanostructures with oxygen- and nitrogen-rich functional groups, exhibiting strong visible fluorescence, good aqueous dispersibility, and high photostability, with uniform morphology and lattice fringes charact

Mechanistic insights and optimization of lignin depolymerization into aromatic monomers using vanadium-modified Dawson-type polyoxometalates.

Lignin, as the largest renewable aromatic resource, has significant opportunities for producing high-value products via catalytic depolymerization. However, its complex structure and stable chemical bonds present challenges to its transformation. This study explores the catalytic depolymerization of lignin to aromatic monomers by means of Dawson-type phosphomolybdovanadate polyoxometalates (POMs), understanding the underlying mechanisms. Furthermore, vanadium modification is employed to adjust the catalyst's oxidative and acidic properties, demonstrating that the vanadium content in Dawson-typ

Light-colored, low-condensed lignin via ultrasound- and alkali-assisted ethanol extraction for high-performance sunscreens.

The efficient and high-value utilization of lignin is crucial for advancing sustainable biorefining technologies. Conventional lignin separation methods often lead to the cleavage of β-O-4 linkages, resulting in dark-colored, highly condensed lignin with limited applicability in downstream industries. To overcome this limitation, an ultrasonic- and alkali-assisted ethanol extraction (UASE80) method was developed that enables efficient isolation of light-colored, low-condensed, and highly reactive lignin from poplar wood at ambient temperature. The extracted lignin retains a significant portion

Altered development and lignin deposition in rice p-COUMAROYL ESTER 3-HYDROXYLASE loss-of-function mutants.

The aromatic composition of lignin greatly influences the potential utility of lignocellulosic biomass. Previously, we generated transgenic rice plants with altered lignin aromatic composition and enhanced biomass utilization properties by suppressing the expression of p-COUMAROYL ESTER 3-HYDROXYLASE (C3'H). While RNAi-derived C3'H-knockdown lines displayed relatively normal growth with substantially augmented levels of p-hydroxyphenyl-type lignin units, genome-edited C3'H-knockout lines exhibited severely impaired growth phenotype, leading to arrested seedling development. In this study, we f

A self-healing, long-lasting adhesive, lignin-based polyvinyl alcohol organo-hydrogel for strain-sensing applications.

Hydrogel-based flexible sensors have garnered considerable interest in the fields of soft electronics, robotics, and human-machine interfaces. For better practical applications, integrating multiple properties-such as self-adhesive, anti-freeze, anti-volatile, self-healing, and antibacterial-into a single gel for flexible sensors remains a challenge. In this paper, a multifunctional lignin-based polyvinyl alcohol gel, containing dynamic covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds, and coordination bonds, is constructed by a simple one-pot method, in which ethylene glycol/water chosen as a binary solvent an

Polysaccharide utilization loci from Bacteroidota encode CE15 enzymes with possible roles in cleaving pectin-lignin bonds.

Lignocellulose is a renewable but complex material exhibiting high recalcitrance to enzymatic hydrolysis, which is attributed, in part, to the presence of covalent linkages between lignin and polysaccharides in the plant cell wall. Glucuronoyl esterases from carbohydrate esterase family 15 (CE15) have been proposed as an aid in reducing this recalcitrance by cleaving ester bonds found between lignin and glucuronoxylan. In the Bacteroidota phylum, some species organize genes related to carbohydrate metabolism in polysaccharide utilization loci (PULs) which encode all necessary proteins to bind,

Preparation of spherical porous carbon from lignin-derived phenolic resin and its application in supercapacitor electrodes.

Lignin is the most abundant aromatic biomass resource in nature and is the main by-product of paper industry and biorefinery industry, which has the characteristics of abundant source, renewable and low cost. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are a nascent environmentally friendly solvent option that is gaining traction. DES composed of p-toluenesulfonic acid and choline chloride is used for batch treatment of alkaline lignin, and the bio-oil obtained is ternary polymerized with formaldehyde and phenol to obtain lignin phenolic resin. The porous carbon material is produced through a two-step carbon
