BACKGROUND: Molluscum contagiosum, a pox virus infection, is likely to occur in the eyelid skin; however, corneal involvements by molluscum lesions are extremely rare. We report a case of molluscum contagiosum arising in the corneal limbus in an untreated AIDS patient, together with anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings and histopathology of the excised tumor.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old man with AIDS was referred to our department for the management of an ocular lesion. Blood tests revealed an extremely low CD4+ T-cell count of 11 cells/μL, being strongly positive

The authors report a case of a bilateral limbal dermoid in a 4-year-old girl with no extraocular anomalies or systemic associations. The child's best corrected visual acuity was 20/50 in the right eye and 20/40 in the left eye. There was a small limbal dermoid located on the inferotemporal side in the right eye and a large elevated limbal lesion that extended over the visual axis in the left eye. Limbal dermoid excision and lamellar keratoplasty were performed in the left eye and followed by a simple excision of the limbal dermoid in the right eye. Histopathological examination confirmed the c

PURPOSE: To determine the utility of anterior segment optical coherence tomography angiography (AS-OCTA) in assessing limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD).
METHODS: Twenty-six eyes of 24 LSCD patients, classified clinically into stage I, II and III, and 12 eyes of 12 healthy subjects were included. AS-OCTA images were analyzed by two masked observers, measuring the maximum corneal vascular extension (CoVE) from the limbus to the furthest vessel over the cornea, and corneal vascular thickness (CoVT) from the most superficial to the deepest corneal vessel.
RESULTS: CoVE was 0.27 ± 0.10, 0.79 ± 0

RATIONALE: Limbal dermoids are choristomas known as congenital benign tumors found in abnormal locations. Despite the benign nature, enlarging limbal dermoids may cause visual abnormalities by cornea infiltration with fat component, visual axis invasion, gradually induced corneal astigmatism, and finally result in anisometropic amblyopia. Here we report a rare case of progressive, large pediatric corneal limbal dermoid in a newborn, managed with tissue glue-assisted monolayer amniotic membrane transplantation.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 1-day-old male baby (gestational age, 36 ± 6 weeks; birth body

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to report the presence of focal limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) in 2 cases of Turner syndrome.
METHODS: This is a case review.
RESULTS: A 25-year-old woman with a history of Turner syndrome diagnosed at 15 years of age was referred for "advanced chronic bilateral phlyctenular disease." The patient's visual acuity at presentation was 20/25-2 in the right eye and 20/30-2 in the left eye. Slit-lamp examination of both eyes showed inferior conjunctivalization of the corneal epithelium consistent with LSCD. The patient was started on topical cyclosporine 0.05

BACKGROUND: The most important challenge of performing insitu transcriptional profiling of the human ocular surface epithelial regions is obtaining samples in sufficient amounts, without contamination from adjacent tissue, as the region of interest is microscopic and closely apposed to other tissues regions. We have effectively collected ocular surface (OS) epithelial tissue samples from the Limbal Epithelial Crypt (LEC), limbus, cornea and conjunctiva of post-mortem cadaver eyes with laser microdissection (LMD) technique for gene expression studies with spotted oligonucleotide microarrays and

A 6-year-old boy presented in 1998 with a 1 month history of lime injury in both eyes. Grade 4 chemical injury (Roper-Hall classification) progressed to total limbal stem cell deficiency in both eyes. Between July 2000 and July 2009, he cumulatively underwent 11 limbal stem cell transplantation surgeries, either direct or cultivated from either his father or mother, and 3 corneal transplants in both eyes. Each of the procedures led to a transient clearing of his visual axis to give vision in the range of 20/60 to 20/100 for a period of 1-3 months after which it failed. He finally underwent Bos

The use of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) is a great advance in the treatment of patients with cataract allowing near and distance uncorrected visual acuity recovery. However patients with some degrees of corneal astigmatism have some limitations. We present 3 cases that were indicated for phacoemulsitfication and multifocal intraocular lens implant (AcrySof Restor, Alcon Labs) after limbal relaxing incision (LRI) in the dominant eye and axis topographic incision in the fellow eye. There was no similar case report in the literature. It is believed that this association can extend the ind

PURPOSE: To evaluate astigmatism variation between preoperative, 1st and 12th postoperative month of patients who underwent cataract surgery with limbal relaxing incisions (LRI) aiming to reduce the preoperative astigmatism.
METHODS: Sixteen patients who underwent cataract surgery by the phacoemulsification technique with a 5.5 mm escleral incision, at the Altino Ventura Foudation, between April and July of 2002. The limbal relaxing incisions were performed according to Gills' modified nomogram (1D - 1 LRI of 6 mm; 1-2D - 2 LRI of 6 mm; 2-3D - 2 LRI of 8 mm). They were done in the most curved

BACKGROUND: Typically solid limbal dermoids are excised in pre-school age unless a high irregular astigmatism and its risk for amblyopia lead to an earlier intervention.
CASE REPORT: An 80-year-old lady from a rural area complained about a burning, tearing and foreign body sensation of the left eye for two months. In the past two years she had recognized that an extraocular prominence which had been present since birth had shown a tendency to grow. Slit lamp examination showed a markedly prominent and vascularized limbal tumor from 3.30 to 7.00 o'clock. Paralleling the border of the mass ther

PURPOSE: Little is known about the behavior of the endothelial cell (EC) layer following keratoplasty. In vitro experiments suggested that the peripheral endothelium might have a higher regenerative capacity than the central endothelium, and some authors hypothesized that endothelial progenitor cells are present in the limbal area. Thus, we analyzed the corneal endothelial regenerative capacity in vivo in a rat model of bullous keratopathy using either bullous central grafts or bullous peripheral recipient corneas to analyze differences in EC regeneration depending on central versus peripheral

OBJECTIVE: To compare the location of ciliary body (CB) in children with and without primary congenital glaucoma (PCG).
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled Saudi children who were less than 5 years old. CB distance (CBD) was measured and compared in eyes with PCG (PCG group) and without PCG (control group). CBD was measured with a caliper and defined as the distance between the edge of the corneoscleral limbus and the anterior edge of CB as delineated by transillumination. The difference in the CBD between groups was correlated with the axial length, corneal thickness, and cor

PURPOSE: Mast cells, historically known for their effector function in the induction of allergic diseases, reside in all vascularized tissues of the body in particular proximity to blood and lymphatic vessels. As neighboring sentinel cells to blood vessels, mast cells have been associated with angiogenesis. Here we assess the direct contribution of mast cells to neovascularization at the ocular surface.
METHODS: Corneal neovascularization was induced by placing a single figure-of-eight intrastromal suture 1 mm from the limbus in mast cell-deficient (cKitW-sh), C57BL/6, and Balb/c mice. Cornea

BACKGROUND: Ingrowth of newly formed blood and lymph vessels (angiogenesis) from the limbus region into the cornea can be treated successfully by subconjunctival application of antiangiogenic agents. Currently, there are several angiogenesis inhibitors from various manufacturers available, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibodies. The aim of the study was to investigate potential cytotoxic effects of two anti-VEGF agents, ranibizumab (Lucentis®) and bevacizumab (Avastin®) on the human corneal endothelium.
METHODS: Human donor corneas, not suitable for corneal transplantati
