Squamous cell carcinoma complicating lichen planus: a clinico-pathological study of three cases.

Squamous cell carcinoma complicating lichen planus is described in 3 patients. In 2, the cancers developed on the lower leg in chronic and hypertrophic lichen planus. In the other case, the cancer complicated lichen planus of the lip mucosa in a smoker. In the two cutaneous cases, the tumour and the adjacent skin showed features of lichen planus, including hypergranulosis, cytoid bodies and a lichenoid infiltrate. The association, though rare with cutaneous lichen planus when it tends to affect chronic hypertrophic lesions on the lower legs, is now well recognized with oral lichen planus. Pati

Abbe-Estlander flap reconstruction in infants with extensive upper lip defects following oncosurgery: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection of malignant lip tumors and the reconstruction of extensive lip defects in infants pose significant challenges. We evaluated the effectiveness of the Abbe-Estlander (A-E) flap in repairing upper lip defects in infants following oncosurgery. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two cases of pediatric upper lip malignancies: an 18-month-old infant diagnosed with fibrosarcoma (FS) of the right upper lip (Case 1) and a 19-month-old infant diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the left upper lip (Case 2). Both patients underwent surgical resection of the tumors followed

Practical surgical technique using the SMISS approach for lip reduction in involuted lip infantile hemangiomas.

BACKGROUND: Lip infantile hemangiomas tend to show less volumetric regression and are more susceptible to visible sequelae in the involuted stage. Some of them still require surgical management after propranolol therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Stepwise, Multi-Incisional, and Single-Stage (SMISS) approach applied to lip reduction for those with involuted lip hemangiomas. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed to evaluate patients with lip hemangioma who received previous propranolol treatment and underwent the aforementioned procedure. Demographic ch

Application of Dual "Kite" Myomucosal Flaps for the Repair of Medium Lip Defects.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application of dual "kite" myomucosal flaps (subcutaneous pedicle advancement flap) for the repair of medium lip defects (one-third to one-half lip width). METHODS: Dual kite myomucosal flaps were designed in the adjacent area of the defect in 17 patients with medium lip defect with the principle of using homogenous tissue as far as possible without affecting local anatomical units. RESULTS: The follow-up time was 3 to 24 months; 16 patients showed primary wound healing, and 1 patient showed prolonged healing. The blood supply of the myomucosal flaps were reliab

Immunohistochemical expression of DNA repair proteins in oral tongue and lower lip squamous cell carcinoma.

The DNA repair system involves genes and proteins that are essential for the maintenance of genome integrity and the consequent control of various cellular processes. Alterations in these genes and proteins play a role in tumor development and progression and might be associated with prognosis. The aims of this study were to analyze the immunoexpression of two DNA repair proteins, XPF and XRCC1, in lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC) and oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC), and to investigate possible associations with clinical and histopathological parameters. The immunohistoche

The use of a modified abbé island flap to reconstruct primary lip defects of over 80.

BACKGROUND: Lip reconstruction for defects greater than 80 % present a challenge in maintaining acceptable oral function and good aesthetic results. Abbé flaps offer an excellent reconstructive option but are limited to defects under 65 %. METHODS: We describe a two-stage "modified Abbé island flap" technique whereby a full-thickness myocutaneous flap is combined with a modified Karapandzic flap, allowing for reconstruction of total and near total lip defects. RESULTS: Six patients underwent successful two-stage lower and upper lip reconstruction with this technique. Oral competence and sati

Actinic keratosis: from the skin to the lip.

PURPOSE: Actinic keratoses are commonly the result of intense sun damage to the skin and lips of susceptible patients. The purposes of this 2-section article are to familiarize the surgeon with options for care and to suggest methods of incorporation into practice as a true benefit to patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The first section discusses the options chosen for patients who were referred to the Facial Lesion Clinic in a county hospital for precancerous or cancerous facial lesions; the second section reviews ramifications for precancerous sun-damaged lips with clinical leukoplakia. RESUL

Basal cell carcinomas of the lips: a case series and review of the literature.

The aim of this review was to characterise the clinical features of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) occurring on the lips. A review of the literature was performed using PubMed to identify reports of BCCs of the lips. Additionally, a retrospective search of the archives of our diagnostic oral pathology service was performed for BCCs diagnosed between 2000-2023. There were 27 BCCs of the lips identified in the literature review. These tumours typically presented clinically as bleeding, eroded, crusted, ulcerated and/or centrally depressed nodules. Treatment included surgical excision, Mohs microgr

Diagnosis and treatment of a dermal malignant melanoma in an African lion (Panthera leo).

A 13-yr-old intact male African lion (Panthera leo) presented with a 4-mo history of left maxillary lip swelling. On physical examination, a 10-cm-diameter, ulcerated, round, firm, and pigmented mass at the level of the left maxillary canine tooth was noticed. All other organ systems examined were within normal limits. Multiple biopsies of the mass were collected and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin. Histopathologic evaluation of the biopsies revealed a malignant dermal melanoma. Hematologic and plasma biochemical parameters were within normal reference ranges. Thoracic radiographs taken
