Disrupted Visual Cortex Neurophysiology Following Very Preterm Birth.

BACKGROUND: Visual regions develop rapidly in utero and throughout early childhood, but very preterm (VPT) birth can disrupt the typical mat … ignment of spiking, processing information in the brain, and coordinating networks. METHODS: Using magnetoencephalography, we examined regional oscillatory patterns and functional coupling in VPT and full-term children. Five minutes of eyes-open resting-state data were acquired from 27 VPT and 32 full-term children at 8 years of age. RESULTS: As hypothesized, the VPT …

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Affects Cognitive Processing and Modifies Oscillatory Brain Activity during Attentional Tasks.

Despite the high prevalence of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), current diagnostic tools to objectively assess cognitive complaints after mTBI continue to be inadequate. Our aim was to identify neuronal correlates for cognitive difficulties in mTBI patients by evaluating the possible alterations in oscillatory brain activity during a behavioral task known to be sensitive to cognitive impairment after mTBI. We compared oscillatory brain activity during rest and cognitive tasks (Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test [PASAT] and a vigilance test [VT]) with magnetoencephalography between 25 mTBI …

Aberrant resting-state functional brain networks in dyslexia: Symbolic mutual information analysis of neuromagnetic signals.

Neuroimaging studies have identified a variety of structural and functional connectivity abnormalities in students experiencing reading difficulties. The present study adopted a novel approach to assess the dynamics of resting-state neuromagnetic recordings in the form of symbolic sequences (i.e., repeated patterns of neuromagnetic fluctuations within and/or between sensors). Participants were 25 students experiencing severe reading difficulties (RD) and 27 age-matched non-impaired readers (NI) aged 7-14 years. Sensor-level data were first represented as symbolic sequences in eight conventiona

Altered paralimbic interaction in behavioral addiction.

The introduction of magnetoencephalography has made it possible to study electromagnetic signaling in deeper, paralimbic cortical structures such as the medial prefrontal/anterior cingulate (ACC) and medial parietal/posterior cingulate (PCC) cortices. Self-awareness and self-control have been attributed to these regions. To test the hypothesis that they are dysfunctional in pathological gambling with poor self-control, we studied gamblers with and without previous stimulant abuse and age- and sex-matched controls. We found that pathological gamblers were more impulsive than controls in a stop-…

Peri-ictal normalization of visual cortex excitability in migraine: an MEG study.

To delineate if the change in cortical excitability persists across migraine attacks, visual evoked magnetic fields (VEF) were measured in patients with migraine without aura during the interictal (n = 26) or peri-ictal (n = 21) periods, and were compared with 30 healthy controls. The visual stimuli were checkerboard reversals with four different check sizes (15', 30', 60' and 120'). For each check size, five sequential blocks of 50 VEF responses were recorded to calculate the percentage change of the P100m amplitude in the second to the fifth blocks in comparison with the first block. At chec

Magnetoencephalographic analysis of cortical activity in adults with and without Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: This preliminary study served as a pilot for an ongoing analysis of spectral power in adults with Down syndrome (DS) using a 151 channel whole head magnetoencephalography (MEG). The present study is the first step for examining and comparing cortical responses during spontaneous and task related activity in DS. METHOD: Cortical responses were recorded with a 151 channel whole head MEG system in three adults with DS and three age-matched adults without DS. MEG data were obtained at rest with eyes open and during observation of point-light displays of human motion and object motion.…

[A magnetoencephalographic study of generalised developmental disorders. A new proposal for their classification].

INTRODUCTION: Autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) is a term that is not included in DSM IV or in ICD 10, which are the diagnostic tools most commonly used by clinical professionals but can offer problems in research when it comes to finding homogenous groups. DEVELOPMENT: From a neuropaediatric point of view, there is a need for a classification of the generalised disorders affecting development and for this purpose we used Wing's triad, which defines the continuum of the autistic spectrum, and the information provided by magnetoencephalography (MEG) as grouping elements. Specific generalised d…

The coincidence of fetal magnetocardiography and direct electrocardiography in a case of fetal atrial flutter due to intracardiac tumor.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the coincidence of fetal magnetocardiography (FMCG) and fetal direct electrocardiography (FDECG) in a case of fetal atrial flutter (AF). METHODS: FMCG and FDECG using a fetal scalp electrode were recorded in the case of fetal AF at 41 weeks' gestation. RESULTS: FMCG revealed fetal AF with 2:1 atrioventricular block, which was also documented by FDECG using a fetal scalp electrode. The prenatal diagnosis was confirmed by postnatal electrocardiogram. Neonatal echocardiography revealed an intracardiac tumor on the left atrial septum. The tumor seemed to be the cause of

Functional neuroimaging studies of reading and reading disability (developmental dyslexia).

Converging evidence from a number of neuroimaging studies, including our own, suggest that fluent word identification in reading is related to the functional integrity of two consolidated left hemisphere (LH) posterior systems: a dorsal (temporo-parietal) circuit and a ventral (occipito-temporal) circuit. This posterior system is functionally disrupted in developmental dyslexia. Reading disabled readers, relative to nonimpaired readers, demonstrate heightened reliance on both inferior frontal and right hemisphere posterior regions, presumably in compensation for the LH posterior difficulties.

Magnetic stimulation in the treatment of partial seizures.

We have recently demonstrated that Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) brain measurements in patients with seizure disorders show significant MEG activity often in the absence of conventional EEG abnormalities. We localized foci of seizure activity using the mapping technique characterized by the ISO-Spectral Amplitude (ISO-SA) on the scalp distribution of specified spectral components or frequency bands of the emitted MEG Fourier power spectrum. In addition, using an electronic device, we utilized the above recorded activity to emit back the same intensity and frequency of magnetic field to the pre

Complementary univariate and multivariate signals in the parietal cortex for visual working memory pointers and features.

An emerging body of work in visual working memory (VWM) has embraced the theoretical construct of pointers: an object is mentally represented by a content-free pointer binding the corresponding features together. In the current magnetoencephalography (MEG) study, we investigated univariate and multivariate neural responses modulated by number of objects and by number/content of features in two literature-driven posterior parietal patches: inferior and superior intraparietal sulcus (IPS). We found that, across VWM formation and maintenance, number of objects (or attended locations) is tracked b…

The role of left anterior temporal lobe in basic linguistic composition: Evidence from stereo-electroencephalography.

Determining the neural bases of basic linguistic composition is central to research on the cognitive neuroscience of language. The left anterior temporal lobe (LATL) is widely reported during linguistic composition of visual stimuli in magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies. However, this effect is less reported during the linguistic composition of auditory stimuli in intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) studies. To further test this discrepancy, we directly examined the composition effect in LATL by combining the iEEG technique with visual stimuli. Participants were asked to read minimal …

Auditory white noise exposure results in intrinsic cortical excitability changes.

Cortical excitability is commonly measured by applying magnetic stimulation in combination with measuring behavioral response. This measure has, however, some shortcomings including spatial limitation to the primary motor cortex and not accounting for intrinsic excitability fluctuations. Here, we use a measure for intrinsic excitability based on phase synchronization previously validated for epilepsy. We apply this measure in 30 healthy participants' magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings during the exposure of auditory white noise, a stimulus that has been suggested to modify cortical excita…

Functional Connectivity Hypersynchronization in Relatives of Alzheimer's Disease Patients: An Early E/I Balance Dysfunction?

Alzheimer's disease (AD) studies on animal models, and humans showed a tendency of the brain tissue to become hyperexcitable and hypersynchronized, causing neurodegeneration. However, we know little about either the onset of this phenomenon or its early effects on functional brain networks. We studied functional connectivity (FC) on 127 participants (92 middle-age relatives of AD patients and 35 age-matched nonrelatives) using magnetoencephalography. FC was estimated in the alpha band in areas known both for early amyloid accumulation and disrupted FC in MCI converters to AD. We found a fronto…

Abnormal cortical responses elicited by audiovisual movies in patients with autism spectrum disorder with atypical sensory behavior: A magnetoencephalographic study.

BACKGROUND: Atypical sensory behavior disrupts behavioral adaptation in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, neural correlates of sensory dysfunction using magnetoencephalography (MEG) remain unclear. METHOD: We used MEG to measure the cortical activation elicited by visual (uni)/audiovisual (multisensory) movies in 46 children (7-14 years) were included in final analysis: 13 boys with atypical audiovisual behavior in ASD (AAV+), 10 without this condition, and 23 age-matched typically developing boys. RESULTS: The AAV+ group demonstrated an increase in the cortical activati…

Alpha-band rhythm suppression during memory recall reflecting memory performance.

Alpha-band rhythm is thought to be involved in memory processes, similarly to other spontaneous brain rhythms. Ten right-handed healthy volunteers participated in our proposed sequential short-term memory task that provides a serial position effect in accuracy rate. We recorded alpha-band rhythms by magnetoencephalography during performance of the task and observed that the amplitude of the rhythm was suppressed dramatically in the memory recall period. The suppressed region was estimated to be in the occipital lobe, suggesting that alpha-band rhythm is suppressed by activation of the occipita…

Neural changes associated with semantic processing in healthy aging despite intact behavioral performance.

Semantic memory recruits an extensive neural network including the left inferior prefrontal cortex (IPC) and the left temporoparietal region, which are involved in semantic control processes, as well as the anterior temporal lobe region (ATL) which is considered to be involved in processing semantic information at a central level. However, little is known about the underlying neuronal integrity of the semantic network in normal aging. Young and older healthy adults carried out a semantic judgment task while their cortical activity was recorded using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Despite equiva…
