Ameloblastic fibroma (AF) is a benign mixed epithelial and mesenchymal odontogenic tumor. This was previously grouped in odontogenic tumor showing odontogenic epithelium with odontogenic ectomesenchyme, with or without hard tissue formation. This report describes a case of ameloblastic fibroma in a 37-yearold male who came with the complain of swelling in the left side of lower jaw since one year. Enucleation of the mass followed by reconstruction was done six years back. However, after two years of initial treatment; radiographic findings suggested recurrence. Histopathological examination co

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the results of the use of curettage followed by liquid nitrogen spray cryosurgery in a number of solid or multicystic ameloblastomas of the jaws and the postoperative complications related to this treatment modality.
STUDY DESIGN: Thirty-six patients with solid ameloblastoma of the jaws were treated with curettage followed by cryosurgery. The cryotherapy consisted of hand instrumented curettage of the bone lesion followed by three freezing cycles, of 1 minute each, of the remaining bone cavity with liquid nitrogen spray. Postoperative complications were evaluat

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tumor involvement of the posterior mandible often requires resection of the mandibular condyle and associated soft tissue. This study explores clinical and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) associated with condyle preservation versus resection during reconstruction.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study examined patients who underwent bony free flap reconstruction of posterolateral mandible defects from 2017 to 2021. Major clinical outcomes included length of stay (LOS), duration of follow-up, cancer recurrence, and all-cause mortality. PROs were assessed using th

Odontogenic myxoma of the mandibular condyle is a rare tumor that requires complete surgical resection because of the tendency for recurrence. The right mandibular condyle was resected to remove the myxoma. The author performed immediate condylar reconstruction using a costochondral graft (CCG), and stable temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function and occlusion were achieved. During follow-up, the grafted CCG healed well, and a favorable bony union with the mandibular ramus was observed. Furthermore, unexpected bony remodeling was observed in the CCG; growth of the cartilaginous part resulted in

BACKGROUND: The fibula free flap (FFF) is a common choice for mandibular reconstruction after oncologic resection. Advances in technology and surgical technique have changed the workflow of FFF-based mandible reconstruction. This study characterizes an institutional experience with these changes and their impact on patient outcomes.
METHODS: A 21-year retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent segmental mandibulectomy with FFF-based reconstruction.
RESULTS A TOTAL OF: 401 patients underwent reconstruction with 413 free flaps, with a median follow-up period of 2.9 years. Ove

OBJECTIVE: Costochondral grafts (CCGs) have been used for the reconstruction of the craniomaxillofacial defects in various situations. However, there is controversy concerning the growth pattern of CCGs, which is often unpredictable and may manifest as overgrowth or no growth at all. This article summarizes the literature concerning overgrowth of CCGs in craniomaxillofacial reconstruction, and presents an uncommon case of treatment for overgrowth of costal graft in mandibular body reconstruction.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The literature on overgrowth of CCGs in craniomaxillofacial reconstruction

BACKGROUND: Immediate implant-retained surgery on the fibula using the traditional method is a technical challenge in mandibular reconstruction and can worsen the following prosthetic process. A digital workflow with multiple surgical guidance tools can help ensure accuracy and even immediate temporary prosthesis placement in mandibular reconstruction using fibula flaps.
OBJECTIVE: In this article, we present a digital workflow for dental implant placement in the fibula flap using a 3D-printed surgical guide before the vascularization of the flap and temporary prosthesis immediately during su

Marginal mandibulectomy (MM), which involves partially interrupting the height of a mandibular segment, is discussed when head and neck cancer is located close to the mandible because of the potential risk of secondary mandibular fracture. To determine the incidence of secondary mandibular fracture after MM and the associated risk factors we conducted a multicentre study in 3 tertiary cancer care centers. We included all patients with a malignancy requiring MM who completed treatment between January 2013 and December 2023. Of the 432 identified patients, 190 patients were included. 24 patients

This case series describes the use of cortical allografts, cancellous allografts with and without recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB, and titanium locking plates for repair of critical-sized defects in 4 mandibles from 3 canine patients. Two mandibles were repaired after oncologic surgery and 2 mandibles were reconstructed due to chronic nonunion fractures. Various techniques were utilized for maintenance of the occlusion intraoperatively. All patients that received postoperative imaging showed evidence of integration of the allograft with the host bone, demonstrating the vali

Reconstruction of children's mandibles after mandibular resection for benign or malignant tumors is challenging. Microvascular flap reconstruction is a common treatment option for restoring mandibular continuity after the resection of oral cavity neoplasms. We presented 2 cases of childhood mandibular reconstruction after tumor wide excision and segmental mandibulectomy, one for malignant cancer and one for benign ossifying fibroma, with serratus-rib composite free flap. All 2 patients had a favorable facial profile, functional outcome, and dental occlusion at the last follow-up. The developmen

Carcinomas of the mandibular buccogingival region being aggressive rapidly destroy the supporting bone and adjacent soft tissues, making it mandatory for the oncosurgeon to resect substantial amounts of involved hard and soft tissues. Segmental mandibulectomy -followed by immediate bony and soft tissue reconstruction is the most acceptable approach. However, immediate reconstruction may not always be feasible or possible due to high recurrences potential of lesion, inaccessible residual pathology, or systemic -conditions that pose a risk for graft inosculation. In certain cases, where large po

Mandibular condylar osteochondroma (OC) results in asymmetric prognathism with facial morphology and functional disturbances. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of computer-assisted surgical planning combined with intraoperative navigation in the treatment of condylar OC. Five patients with mandibular condylar OC were enrolled in this study. Surgical planning and simulation was performed based on a computed tomography reconstruction model using SurgiCase software. Under the guidance of navigation, a condylar OC resection and conservative condylectomy was carried out via intra
