BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia, a benign proliferation of mammary gland tissue in males, negatively affects body image and can cause psychological distress. Surgical treatments such as subcutaneous mastectomy and liposuction are common but may result in complications like scarring and hematoma. The arthroscopic shaver, originally used for varicose vein and arthroscopic surgeries, has shown promise for soft tissue removal. This study compares the outcomes of liposuction combined with the pull-through technique and the arthroscopic shaver in gynecomastia treatment.
METHODS: Patients with gynecomastia

INTRODUCTION: While male breast carcinoma is a relatively uncommon occurrence, its incidence is on the rise, potentially attributed to sporadic pathophysiological mechanisms, primarily involving hormonal imbalances. Invasive apocrine carcinoma represents a small fraction of global breast malignancies, with limited instances reported among male patients in the literature. The clinical presentation of an apocrine breast carcinoma closely resembles that of other breast cancer subtypes, as it is most often described as a solitary ulcerative nodular lesion occupying a retro-areolar region of the br

BACKGROUND: Gynecomastia or enlargement of the male breasts affects a large proportion of males, with most patients requiring surgical intervention as only a few lesions are actually resolved with medical management alone. Surgery cures the patients of their problems, albeit, at the cost of scarring and other cosmetic problems in some patients. Therefore, refinements in the surgical process are still ongoing so as to provide the best results with minimal scarring.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To find out the feasibility of a minimal incision technique for glandular excision after liposuction in patie

BACKGROUND: Most adolescent gynecomastia is resolved spontaneously in 3 years. But, persistent gynecomastia could have a negative influence on psychoemotional development on adolescence. The purpose of this study is to report the characteristics of adolescent gynecomastia patients who received the surgeries, and discuss the short-term surgical outcomes.
METHODS: Of the 1454 patients who underwent gynecomastia surgery at Damsoyu hospital from January 2014 to May 2016, 71 were adolescents. Subcutaneous mastectomy with liposuction was performed for adolescent patients who had gynecomastia for mo

Based on the good results of re-irradiation plus hyperthermia in breast cancer recurrences on the chest wall, it was decided to offer similar treatment to a patient with recurrent metastatic breast cancer in the orbital region. A female patient was diagnosed in 1997 with breast cancer stage T4N0M0. She was treated with six neo-adjuvant chemotherapy courses and mastectomy, followed by hormonal treatment. In December 1998, she was diagnosed with metastatic disease in the medial upper quadrant of the left orbit. This was excised, followed by 40 Gy radiotherapy. Nine months later, the tumour had r

Despite decades of use, the long-term safety of breast implants in women remains a concern. While the incidence of breast cancer among women has increased dramatically in the past decade, the implant-related risk of carcinoma of the breast only recently has received widespread attention. An additional concern is that the presence of the implant may delay tumor detection. This study allows examination of breast cancer risk and detection issues among patients with long-term exposure. We conducted a record linkage cohort study of cosmetic breast implant patients. We abstracted the records of the

Aims: Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) is a surgical procedure for patients with breast cancer without nipple-areolar complex (NAC) involvement. Robotic NSM (RNSM) with immediate breast reconstruction has been recently introduced; however, reports regarding RNSM are still lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the postoperative assessment with a focus on postoperative pain of RNSM with prepectoral immediate prosthesis breast reconstruction (IPBR) compared with conventional NSM (CNSM) in patients with breast cancer without NAC invasion. Methods: This retrospective study included 81 pat

BACKGROUND: Many patients undergoing total-skin sparing mastectomy (TSSM) and 2-staged expander-implant (TE-I) reconstruction require postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT). Additionally, many patients undergoing TSSM for recurrent cancer have a history of lumpectomy and radiation therapy (XRT). Few studies have looked at the impact of XRT on the stages of TE-I reconstruction.
METHODS: Patients undergoing TSSM and immediate TE-I reconstruction between 2006 and 2013 were identified from a prospectively maintained database. Rates of TE-I loss and severe infection requiring intravenous antibiot

BACKGROUND: Management of the nipple-areola complex is an important issue in primary breast reconstruction. When nipple-sparing mastectomy is not suitable, alternatives are immediate nipple-areola complex replantation and delayed reconstruction. The aim of this study was to examine whether patients benefit more from nipple-areola complex preservation by immediate replantation or delayed nipple-areola complex reconstruction.
METHODS: Postoperative results and patient satisfaction after 54 primary breast reconstructions with immediate nipple-areola complex replantation or delayed nipple-areola

Several methods for complete phalloplasty are reported in the current literature. However, a unique technique has not been established in specialized centers so far. The radial forearm phalloplasty and the free fibular flap are the most common procedures for neophallus construction. There are 3 modifications for the radial forearm flap: the double folded "tube into tube" flap with a central vascularized urethra, the radial forearm flap with a vascularized urethra in the ulnar part of the flap and the radial forearm phalloplasty with a prelaminated neo-urethra using a full thickness skin graft.

The discovery of clinically occult breast cancer creates an exciting opportunity to alter the natural history of one of the major killers of women in our society. The skills required for this endeavor depend on high-quality images that provide the mammographer with sufficient information to construct three-dimensional perceptions recognizable as departures from normal architecture. Altering the natural course of breast cancer depends on early detection. Early detection of breast cancer depends on high-quality imaging techniques. Paramount among the imaging techniques for breast cancer detectio

BACKGROUND: The role of acellular dermis in immediate prosthetic breast reconstruction remains unclear, particularly within a radiated field. The authors evaluated and compare outcomes following reconstruction with and without acellular dermis, and analyzed patients exposed to radiation therapy.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 417 consecutive patients (592 breasts) treated from January of 2006 to October of 2008 at one institution was performed. Relevant patient characteristics and follow-up were recorded. Complications were categorized by type and end outcome, including nonoperative, operat

BACKGROUND: Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) confers similarly excellent patient-reported outcomes (PROs) as skin-sparing mastectomy; however, the relative weight of individual patient- and treatment-related factors on satisfaction with breasts and psychosocial well-being following NSM is unclear. We assessed predictors of PROs following NSM.
METHODS: Patients undergoing NSM between April 2018 and July 2021 at a single institution were included in a prospective examination. Routinely collected preoperative and postoperative BREAST-Q responses were recorded. Univariable and multivariable linear

BACKGROUND: Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) has become increasingly prevalent for patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) requiring mastectomy. However, few data regarding recurrence outcomes after NSM are available for this patient population. This study evaluated the locoregional recurrence (LRR) rate for patients with pure DCIS who underwent NSM followed by immediate breast reconstruction without adjuvant radiotherapy and investigated potential risk factors for LRR and/or nipple-areola complex recurrence (NR).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for 199 consecutive pa

BACKGROUND: Nipple-sparing mastectomy in patients with large, ptotic breasts is a reconstructive challenge. Staged breast reduction before prophylactic nipple-sparing mastectomy has been shown to decrease complications; however, a direct comparison of outcomes between staged and nonstaged techniques is lacking.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients that underwent staged breast reduction before nipple-sparing mastectomy was conducted. Staged cases were matched to nonstaged nipple-sparing mastectomy cases according to known risk factors for complications. Individual staged cases with

BACKGROUND: Breast hypertrophy, generally found in association with ptosis, is a common problem in postadolescent women. Beyond the psychological burden of excessively heavy, droopy breasts, physical symptoms compound the condition, with neck, shoulder and back pain. Reduction mammaplasty is one of the most common cosmetic operations, especially to improve patient's musculoskeletal symptoms, with proven benefits in patient satisfaction and self-esteem postoperatively. Multiple techniques exist for breast reduction, with no clear evidence of benefit of one over another.
METHODS: We review the

BACKGROUND: Immediate breast reconstruction in large and ptotic breasts is challenging, often requiring skin-reducing procedures. The Wise-pattern skin-reducing mastectomy (WPSRM) technique provides reliable one-stage implant coverage using the pectoralis muscle and a de-epithelialized inferiorly based dermal flap. However, de-vascularization may result in mastectomy skin flap necrosis. We aimed to critically evaluate and isolate patients at high risk of complications using this procedure.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients undergoing WPSRM by the senior author from Jan

BACKGROUND: When prosthetic reconstruction fails, and in the case of absolute contraindications to flaps use, no common reconstructive option is available.
METHODS: A large irradiated breast was reconstructed using only fat grafts (9 sessions) after prosthetic reconstruction failure (exposure of implant) due to absolute contraindications to general anesthesia and unavailability of large flaps. During the first four sessions small volumes were implanted in the extremely rigid and retracted tissues with regenerative purposes. Larger volumes were implanted during the last five sessions to improv
