Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) occurs during the development of liver fibrosis in BA. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Timely diagnosis of biliary atresia remains critical in infants with neonatal cholestasis, as delays in recognition are associated with reduced native liver survival and poorer outcomes following hepatoportoenterostomy. However, distinguishing biliary atresia from other causes of neonatal cholestasis remains challenging because of overlapping clinical, laboratory, and imaging features. This review highlights emerging diagnostic strategies aimed at improving earlier and more accurate identification of biliary atresia.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine the frequency and clinical significance of intraamniotic inflammation in asymptomatic women with a sonographic short cervix (SCX) in the midtrimester.
STUDY DESIGN: This cohort study included 47 asymptomatic women (14-24 weeks) with an SCX (<or=15 mm) who underwent amniocentesis. Women with multiple gestation, cerclage, or cervical dilatation greater than 2 cm were excluded. Intraamniotic inflammation was defined as an elevated amniotic fluid (AF) matrix metalloproteinase-8 concentration (>23 ng/mL).

The clinical behavior of giant cell tumors (GCTs) is unpredictable. To gain insight into this tumor's biological behavior, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) were studied. These substances play essential roles in wound healing and neoplastic invasion and metastasis. PURPOSE: To assess the quantitative differences in the levels of members of the transforming growth factor (TGF-β), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), and tissue inhibitor of MMP (TIMP) families in the aqueous humor (AH) between patients with acute primary angle closure (APAC) and those with cataract only.
