OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical features, aetiologic factors, challenging properties (such as radio opacity in Water's view in a patient with no sinusitis), signs and symptoms of the ectopic teeth in the maxillary sinus.
STUDY DESIGN: Clinical symptoms and radiographic findings of 14 patients with ectopic teeth in the maxillary sinus were evaluated. Computed tomography (CT) and conventional radiographic images of maxillary sinus and clinical findings were compared with each other with regard to the final diagnosis.

Organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus is a rare clinical disease. To our knowledge, only a few cases of organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus have previously been published, most coming without bleeding history and disorders. We report three cases of organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus presenting with an enlarging maxillary sinus mass. In the evaluation of a patient with recurrent nasal bleeding, nasal obstruction, and an enlarging maxillary mass, organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus should be included in the differential diagnosis.

Maxillary sinus carcinoma (MSC) is a rare disease with a variety of treatment options. The present study was undertaken to review the outcome of patients with treated MSC in order to clarify the factors related to local recurrence by analyzing CT findings. The study group comprised of 47 cases, 40 males and 7 females with a median age of 61 years (range, 40- 84 years) treated between 1988 to 1996 at the department of radiotherapy. The results of a survey roentgenogram of the paranasal sinuses in the nasomental projection were compared to those of maxillary and frontal sinus zonography according to an original technique in 150 patients aged 15-67 years with acute and chronic lesions in the frontal or maxillary sinuses. Diagnostic efficacy of paranasal sinus zonography is shown.

The authors present two cases of organized hematoma of the maxillary sinus. Both patients showed no bleeding abnormalities. Clinical symptoms, signs and radiologic appearance of the mass mimicked tumor during the initial diagnosis of the disease. To our knowledge, this is the first article describing organized hematoma in the maxillary sinus mimicking tumor without bleeding history and disorders. A provisional diagnosis of organized hematoma should be considered when a patient with history of epistaxis develops a slow-growing mass of the cheek and/or nasal obstruction.

We report the intraoperative use of bent probes for 3-dimensional computer-assisted navigation in ENT surgery with the ISG Viewing Wand. Probe calibration is standardized and the new probes comply with the overall application accuracy of the navigation system. The bent probes permit an easy access to the remotest locations of the maxillary and the frontal sinus and are beneficial for application in paranasal sinus surgery. We present our clinical experiences with these probes.

Five patients with a second maxillary cancer (squamous cell carcinoma), which developed 6 to 17 years after initial treatment for the first cancer on the opposite side, were compared with 21 control cases with a primary cancer on the basis of computed tomography (CT) findings. Generally, the second cancer was found at an earlier stage. A poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma arising in the left maxilla of a seventy year-old female is reported in the present paper. The patient was seeking treatment for a maintained nose bleeding which appeared several days before. In addition to the report of the clinical case, the authors rewied the main features of the disease, emphasizing the low frequency of the condition, as compared to other neoplasic involvement arising in the head and neck. Due to the advanced stage of the case herewith reported, the patient underwent no treatment.

The TNM staging of maxillary sinus cancer was stipulated by the UICC in 1987 using Ohngren line of demarcation. This report is to discuss the applicability of this staging based on 232 cases of maxillary sinus cancer treated in this hospital.
