Injuries to the face, mouth and jaws are common presentations to UK hospitals. Understanding the current volume of work and the recent changes can yield important lessons for the teams that deal with facial injuries. We examined the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) covering England for the financial reporting years ending in 2015-2024 for relevant diagnoses and procedures undertaken during hospital admissions. A significant reduction in activity in many areas due to COIVD-19 was found. We report on the change between average volumes of activity in the years ending 2015-17, compared with the y

AIM: The aim of this work is to analyze the risk factors in interpersonal violence and to describe the epidemiology, patterns and management of maxillofacial fractures in high volume trauma center of the northern Italy.
MATERIAL: This retrospective study recorded patients hospitalized with maxillofacial fractures, at the division of maxillofacial surgery, Città della Scienza e della Salute University Hospital, Torino, Italy, since January 2001.
METHODS: Only patients who presented with "violence" in the database field for "cause of injury" and with "interpersonal violence" as a subtype of et

PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess the changes in the etiology, incidence, and pattern of maxillofacial fractures during 2 different study periods in our department.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients treated for maxillofacial fractures at our department from January 2000 to December 2009 were included. Data regarding patient's age, sex, etiology of fracture, time of injury, site of fracture, and pattern of fracture were collected and grouped chronologically into two 5-year periods: 2000 to 2004 (period 1) and 2005 to 2009 (period 2); the results of the study

Iatrogenic injury to the trigeminal nerve can remain a source of concern and litigation even for the most experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons. This article provides the most up-to-date evidence-based recommendations for identification, prevention, and management of these injuries to help clinicians provide the highest level of patient care.

The records of 92 patients who sustained fractures of the transverse processes of thoracic or lumbar vertebrae between 1976 and mid-1982 were reviewed. The majority were injured in motor vehicle accidents. Trauma to abdominal viscera occurred in 19 patients including hepatic injuries in six, splenic injuries in 12, and colonic injuries in five. Hematuria was present in 51 patients and five of 51 had urinary tract injury requiring operative treatment. None of 34 patients without hematuria incurred anatomic disruption of the urinary tract. Thirty-two patients suffered other associated injuries,

Our aim was to assess oral and maxillofacial operating theatre activity at the NATO Multinational Medical Unit at Kandahar Airfield (MMU KAF). We made a retrospective analysis of the theatre logbook of the MMU KAF between 1 February 2007 and 31 October 2008. During that period, 1778 operations were done for 1639 patients. A total of 563 local civilians (34% of all patients) were operated on. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons were involved in 322/1778 (18%), general surgeons in 943/1778 (53%), and orthopaedic surgeons in 716/1778 (40%) of operations. Neurosurgeons were present only between March

Computed tomography (CT) has become the key diagnostic modality in the evaluation of head trauma. Experience with CT in the operative assessment of maxillofacial injuries is limited, however. Plain films and multidirectional tomography have been used until now to define fractures in the facial region. We examined 27 patients sustaining maxillofacial trauma with CT scans. Ten patients were studied in the coronal plane, 12 in the axial plane, and the remaining 5 in both the axial and coronal planes. Polycycloidal tomography in the coronal and/or sagittal plane was obtained in 18 patients for com…

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial trauma represents a major public health burden in South Asia, where road traffic accident (RTA) remains the predominant cause of injury. However, evidence regarding the etiological distribution of maxillofacial trauma across the region remains fragmented, limiting the development of targeted preventive strategies. This study aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the etiology of maxillofacial trauma in South Asia from 1995 to 2025, with emphasis on etiology and associated fracture patterns.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conduc

The inferior alveolar nerve and facial nerve are the two most important nerves in the dental and maxillofacial region. The injury to them is one of the major postoperative complications after alveolar surgery and orthognathic surgery. However, recovering the nerve function after injury takes a long time and the recovery effect tends to be unsatisfactory. In recent years, an intensively investigated technique, low level laser which has been applying in assisting the recovery of nerve function, has been gradually proved to be effective in clinically treating postoperative nerve injury. In this a

Fractures of the frontal sinus are frequently encountered injuries of maxillofacial fractures. The most common causes are traffic accidents, followed by sports-related injuries. There is still no consensus regarding the optimal management of frontal sinus fractures. The authors report a patient with depressed anterior wall fracture of the frontal sinus and superior orbital rim fracture. Reduction was performed by traction from 2 screws applied percutaneously to the depressed fragments and external fixation with an aluminum nasal splint. This technique is both minimally invasive and permits eas

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Maxillofacial fractures often occur with serious concomitant injury in trauma patients, and knowledge of the type and severity of associated injuries can assist in rapid assessment and treatment. The objective was to identify the most commonly occurring injuries associated with facial fractures in severely injured trauma patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Review of medical records.
METHODS: A retrospective review was made of 151 patients with facial fractures presenting to a level-one trauma center over a 4-year span. All patients had an injury severity score of 12 or greater. Ch

Injuries in the maxillofacial region with knife in situ are not common. We report a rare case with knife impacted in the orbit, maxilla and soft palate. Removal was possible only by surgical intervention. Despite the deep penetration, the knife had not injured major structures and hence there was no untoward complication in the outcome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Trauma to the maxillofacial region is usually associated with varying degrees of disruption of the soft and hard tissues in the region and injuries to the neighbouring structures such as eyes, brain, nasal apparatus and paranasal sinuses. Injuries to the middle third of the face commonly destroys the integrity of the orbital skeleton, and are frequently complicated by injury to the eye, ranging between 2.7 and 67% as reported in the literature. These injuries may result in loss of vision or compromised ocular function. When these injuries are severe, they may be dete

OBJECTIVE: This study showed a retrospective analysis of the etiology, incidence and treatment of maxillofacial injuries in a pediatric and adolescent population of the State of Sao Paulo.
METHODS: We analyzed 2986 medical records of victims of facial trauma under 18 years, treated between 1999 and 2008 by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Piracicaba Dental School, University of Campinas, Sao Paulo - Brazil. During this period, 757 patients under 18 were victims of maxillofacial trauma, of which, 112 patients had 139 lines of fracture in the mandible. The most affected age gro…
