Political vs. expert: the impact of influencer type on vaccination willingness.

INTRODUCTION: During a pandemic, influencers played a key role in promoting vaccination. This study examines the impact of influencer types (political vs. expert) on vaccination in the context of a future pandemic caused by a novel virus. METHODS: A 2 × 2 between-subjects experimental design was employed, with 287 valid adult participants recruited from China. Among all participants, 41.81% were male and 58.19% were female, with an average age of 30.20 years (SD = 7.64). Participants were exposed to simulated social media posts that manipulated influencer types (political vs. expert) and mess

"Smashing through barriers"? A multimodal critical discourse analysis of media representations of hearing loss and D/deafness.

Hearing loss (HL) is a prevalent condition that can substantially impact quality of life. Hearing aids can benefit people living with HL, yet many delay seeking treatment. This may be due to limited public awareness of HL and the stigma surrounding HL and hearing aids. The media can significantly shape public perceptions of HL and D/deafness, and there have been calls for improved media portrayals of HL and D/deafness. This study examined how British newspapers represent HL and D/deafness both visually and textually, and whether these representations reiterate and/or challenge stigma. This qua

Gambling adverts on social media reach 2.3 times more men than women: Using the Meta Ad library to assess gambling advertising in Ireland.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling is a public health issue, leading to many harms. Gambling advertising is prevalent and constant, including on social media, which allows for personalised targeting and wide reach. Our aim was to understand the reach and target demographics such advertising. METHODS: The EU Digital Services Act now requires large online platforms to provide repositories for all advertising shown and associated audience demographic data for EU countries. We used Ireland as a case study to assess the scale of targeting specific genders and age groups by gambling companies, as well a

Fine forecasts: encouraging the media to include ultraviolet radiation information in summertime weather forecasts.

Melanoma and skin cancer are largely attributable to over-exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Reports of UVR levels within media weather forecasts appear to be well received by the public and have good potential to communicate the need for appropriate sun protection to a broad audience. This study describes provision of UVR messages by New Zealand newspapers, radio and TV stations over a 4-year period, and examines the impact of an intervention which aimed to address media concerns about the financial costs of accessing UVR information for broadcast. Facial nerve paralysis secondary to chronic otitis media without cholesteatoma.

Numerous papers have been written on facial nerve paralysis caused by chronic suppurative otitis media. However the authors found none documenting the results of therapy in a series of patients in whom facial nerve dysfunction was caused by chronic otitis media without cholesteatoma. Thus, there is little factual information available to help select a specific therapeutic plan for such cases. Over the past decade, the senior author has managed five cases (6 ears) of chronic suppurative otitis media without cholesteatoma in which facial paresis (4 ears) or paralysis (2 ears) developed 10 days o

[Psychological impact of the new digital media].

This review article starts from the hypothesis that the new digital media's impact on people's mental health, which in professional and private everyday life has become increasingly frequent and intense, is widely underestimated. The disturbances associated with media exposure, which have been already described and examined, are presented and discussed, while classifying them in three groups of disorders, namely dissocial, dissociative and impulse control disorders. In a second step, psychotherapeutic and psychiatric applications of the digital media are presented, especially, psychometric and…

Arterial stiffness and carotid distensibility following acute formaldehyde exposure in female adults.

Formaldehyde (FA) is a ubiquitous organic preservative used in several industries and represents an occupational health hazard. Short-term exposure to FA can increase oxidative stress and cause a decrease in conduit vessel function. These decrements in vascular function may extend to the arterial architecture, predisposing individuals to increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of an acute 90-minute FA exposure period (259 ± 95 ppb) on indices of arterial architecture. Arterial stiffness and carotid distensibility as determined by centra

Social Media Use During Pregnancy: Risks and Benefits for Women's Health.

Social media use during pregnancy is increasingly common, with millions of women sharing and seeking information on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, Twitter (X), and many others. These online forums can provide valuable benefits by offering social support, health education, and peer-to-peer advice. However, social media also carries risks: exposure to misinformation, unrealistic ideals, and negative social comparisons can increase anxiety, body dissatisfaction, and health confusion. This review examines evidence from recent peer-reviewed studies (2019-2

Interim outcomes for a community-based program to prevent perinatal HIV transmission.

The AIDS Prevention for Pediatric Life Enrichment (APPLE) project is a community-based program to prevent perinatal HIV infection by preventing infection in women. One project component tested a primary prevention model developed from principles of cognitive social learning theory which used street outreach and community-targeted small media materials to increase the use of condoms. Formative research was used to explore community perceptions about HIV/AIDS and to design media materials. Program evaluation employed a two-community, time series, quasi-experimental design. Annual street surveys

Misleading health risk information and public health decision-making on digital platforms: evidence from tech-fearmongering food production short videos.

BACKGROUND: Digital platforms have become important channels for public health risk information and everyday health decision-making. Misleading risk information may distort public risk cognition, weaken trust in regulatory systems, and reshape protective behavioral intentions. METHODS: Grounded in Protection Motivation Theory, this study examined tech-fearmongering food production short videos as a case of misleading health risk information in platform environments. A scenario-based experimental design was used with 487 valid responses from Chinese internet users. Single-mediator and parallel

Screen use and its evolution in children aged 3 to 11: A survey in a priority education network.

BACKGROUND: The digital world affects people, especially children, who are exposed to it from an early age. This consumption, excessive at times, and its effects on children's development are of growing concern to pediatric authorities and the public sector. However, few studies on digital use among children aged 3 to 11 have been conducted in priority education networks in France. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to investigate screen exposure by elementary school children and its evolution with age in a disadvantaged socioeconomic context. METHODS AND SETTINGS: Data on family structure

The WHO Said What? Interaction of Source Credibility and Readers' Prior Beliefs in the Reading of Social-Media Posts.

Evaluating sources is an essential skill in our misinformation-riddled media environment. However, previous studies suggest that people tend not to engage with source information during reading, and very little research exists on how source credibility and readers' beliefs interact on social media. We examined how source credibility and prior beliefs affect reading social-media posts. Finnish university students (N = 83) first filled out a questionnaire measuring beliefs on eight controversial topics and then read 76 mock-up tweets on these topics while their eye movements were recorded. The s

Bombarded? Child's-eye views of smartphone-based game application advertising: objective insights from Aotearoa New Zealand.

Children's engagement with smartphone-based (online) game applications is commonplace. There appears to be no objective evidence base for children's exposure to advertising within game-apps captured in real-time by children themselves. This study aimed to objectively explore the nature and extent of young adolescents' exposure to smartphone game-app-based advertising. Sixty-six children aged 11-13 years (mean age = 12.7, SD = 0.79) from 16 schools in the Wellington region of New Zealand used Zoom video teleconferencing software to record real-time, screen-shared internet use for four consecuti

From streaming to visiting: How rural sports foster destination tourism.

Rural sports event live streaming, such as the Village Super League in China, has substantially increased public attention and tourism interest. Yet, why strong online engagement often fails to translate into sustained offline tourism participation remains poorly understood. Existing research has largely emphasized event exposure and destination marketing while paying limited attention to how community interaction and evaluative processes shape online-to-offline (O2O) behavioral conversion. Drawing on the Village Super League as the empirical context, this study examines how different forms of

Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy in Louisiana Through Social Media Listening and Community Feedback: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The rise of social media has significantly impacted public health programs, with platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, and, more recently, TikTok being used to promote health information, raise awareness about disease outbreaks, and support disease prevention programs. However, the diverse and often unverified nature of the content on social media can make it challenging to discern accurate information, contributing to user uncertainty, which may in turn contribute to low vaccination rates in some regions. This is especially true in Louisian
