The Functional and Structural Neuroanatomy of Systems Consolidation for Autobiographical and Semantic Memory.

It is well established that patients with memory impairment have more difficulty retrieving memories from the recent past relative to the remote past and that damage to the medial temporal lobe (MTL) plays a key role in this pattern of impairment. The precise role of the MTL and how it may interact with other brain regions remains an area of active research. We investigated the role of structures in a memory network that supports remembering. Our chapter focuses on two types of memory: episodic memory and semantic memory. Findings from studies of patients with brain damage and neuroimaging stu

Context memory in Korsakoff's syndrome.

Memory for contextual information and target-context integration are crucial for successful episodic memory formation and are impaired in patients with Korsakoff's syndrome. In this paper we review the evidence for the notion that a context memory deficit makes an important contribution to the amnesia in these patients. First, we focus on anterograde memory for contextual (spatial and temporal) information. Next, the use of contextual cues in memory retrieval is examined and their role in retrograde amnesia and confabulation. Evidence on the role of contextual cues and associations in working

Pupil dilation as an index of episodic processing when remembering, imagining, and thinking creatively.

Prior research indicates that the cognitive and neural systems supporting the recall of specific past experiences (episodic memory) also play a key role in imagining novel and specific future experiences (episodic simulation), and divergent creative thinking. In particular, constructive memory processes (e.g. retrieval and recombination of specific episodic details) are thought to benefit episodic simulation and divergent thinking. In the current study, we provide a novel test of this hypothesis using eye-tracking. We capitalized on prior eye-tracking and neuroimaging evidence demonstrating th

Subjective memory concerns and cognitive aging in Puerto Rican older adults: the moderating role of chronic pain.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Older Puerto Rican adults face disproportionately high dementia rates, and subjective memory concerns (SMCs) are often the earliest sign of cognitive risk. The role of chronic pain in shaping SMC-cognition associations is poorly understood. We evaluated 2 SMC items as predictors of cognition and tested whether chronic pain moderated these associations. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants without cognitive impairment (n = 575; mean age = 83.90) came from the Puerto Rican Elderly: Health Conditions (PREHCO) study and were reassessed approximately 2 years later (

A 5th type of hypersensitivity reaction: does incidental recruitment of autoreactive effector memory T-cells in response to minute amounts of PAMPs or DAMPs, underlie inflammatory episodes in the seronegative arthropathies and acute anterior uveitis?

There are many documented associations of the HLA B27-related diseases--the seronegative arthropathies (SNAs) and acute anterior uveitis (AAU). However, to date no single pathogenic mechanism has been proposed which can account for more than a few of these associations. The hypothesis presented in this paper is that individual inflammatory episodes in the SNAs and HLA B27 AAU are initiated locally within the inflamed site, in response to tiny quantities of innately recognised molecules--pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). However, c

Consciousness as a Memory System.

We suggest that there is confusion between why consciousness developed and what additional functions, through continued evolution, it has co-opted. Consider episodic memory. If we believe that episodic memory evolved solely to accurately represent past events, it seems like a terrible system-prone to forgetting and false memories. However, if we believe that episodic memory developed to flexibly and creatively combine and rearrange memories of prior events in order to plan for the future, then it is quite a good system. We argue that consciousness originally developed as part of the episodic m

Contributions of the ventral parietal cortex to declarative memory.

Our understanding of the role that ventral parietal cortex (VPC) plays in declarative memory processes has changed dramatically over the last two decades. The goal of this chapter is to provide a concise overview data concerning VPC involvement in episodic memory (EM), and to connect this data to several key theories of VPC function. We review evidence from five methodological domains in cognitive neuroscience: neuropsychological lesion evidence, univariate activation studies, multivoxel pattern analyses, functional connectivity studies, and brain stimulation experiments. We discuss how the bo

What divides and unites our memories: Multifactor trial-wise predictions of memory across 6+ million trials.

A majority of memory research examines a single or a few factors that influence memory, but a broader perspective is needed to form a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of memory. Prior work has largely focused on observer effects (e.g., individual differences, internal states) and environmental effects (e.g., task, context), with only more recent work focusing on item effects (e.g., the typicality or memorability of stimuli). Here, I analyze 6,223,953 memory decisions made by 13,946 participants on a continuous recognition task for 26,107 naturalistic object images to test how thes

Trait nostalgia: Four scales and a recommendation.

We review four established scales for measuring individual differences in trait-level nostalgia: the Nostalgia Inventory, the Southampton Nostalgia Scale, the Nostalgia Prototype Scale, and the Personal Inventory of Nostalgic Experiences. To examine their convergent validity, we re-analyzed data from a published study in which all four scales were administered simultaneously. Multi-group confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated that a one-factor model accurately described the interrelations among the four scales, and supported full metric and partial scalar invariance across U.S. and Chinese

RNAseq profiling of blood from patients with coronary artery disease: Signature of a T cell imbalance.

BACKGROUND: Enriched environments support neurodevelopment, yet the neural pathways through which neighborhood enrichment relates to episodic memory remain poorly understood. This study examined whether brain function and structure in episodic memory-implicated neurocircuitry mediate the relationship between neighborhood enrichment and episodic memory performance. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (n = 9,004) at two timepoints (baseline: age 9-11-years and two-year follow-up: 11-13-years-old). Neighborhood enrichment was estimated at the child's p

Impairments in memory and hippocampal function in HIV-positive vs HIV-negative women: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVE: Neurocognitive studies of HIV typically target executive functions dependent on frontostriatal circuitry. The integrity of medial temporal systems has received considerably less attention despite high hippocampal viral load. Studies also predominately involve HIV+ men, though HIV+ women may be at increased risk for cognitive dysfunction due to the high prevalence of psychosocial/mental health problems and lower educational attainment. Our aim was to conduct a preliminary investigation of episodic memory and its neural correlates in HIV-infected and at-risk uninfected women. METHODS

Focal retrograde amnesia and the episodic-semantic distinction.

This article reports a review of focal retrograde amnesia (FRA), or the phenomenon of organically based severe memory loss restricted to retrograde, or pretraumatic, memory. Cases of FRA are classified according to the type of memory loss: episodic, semantic, or both. A few different clusters of the disorder were identified. Lesions to either the anterior temporal lobes or the posterior/visual cortex can result in an FRA that devastates retrograde episodic memory, while having smaller effects on semantic memory. A number of left-hemisphere patients have FRA confined to semantic memory. There a

Associations Between Depressive Symptoms and Memory Functions in Persons with HIV: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Episodic memory impairment can persist in persons with HIV (PWH) despite treatment. Depression is among the most prevalent comorbidities in HIV. Changes to brain regions involved in episodic memory like the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex have been well documented in depression. If episodic memory changes occur in PWH, it is important to understand the potential impact of concurrent depressive symptoms (DS). Thus, our objective was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the role of DS in episodic memory in PWH. We included cross-sectional and longitudinal studies that provid

Memory impairment in alcohol use disorder is associated with regional frontal brain volumes.

BACKGROUND: Episodic memory deficits occur in alcohol use disorder (AUD), but their anatomical substrates remain in question. Although persistent memory impairment is classically associated with limbic circuitry disruption, learning and retrieval of new information also relies on frontal systems. Despite AUD vulnerability of frontal lobe integrity, relations between frontal regions and memory processes have been under-appreciated. METHODS: Participants included 91 AUD (49 with a drug diagnosis history) and 36 controls. Verbal and visual episodic memory scores were age- and education-corrected

Value network engagement and effects of memory-related processing during encoding and retrieval of value.

Decision makers rely on episodic memory to calculate choice values in everyday life, yet it is unclear how neural mechanisms of valuation differ when value-related information is encoded versus retrieved from episodic memory. The current fMRI study compared neural correlates of value while information was encoded versus retrieved from memory. Scanned tasks were followed by a behavioral episodic memory test for item-attribute associations. Our analyses sought to (i) identify neural correlates of value that were distinct and common across encoding and retrieval, and (ii) determine whether neural

Functional retrograde amnesia: a quantitative case study.

The memory impairment of a patient suffering from functional retrograde amnesia was assessed both during the amnesic episode and after its termination. The patient's performance on a task tapping semantic memory was nearly identical on the two test occasions, but his performance on a task tapping episodic memory substantially changed across test sessions. Cueing procedures revealed that in spite of the patient's restricted access to episodic memory during the amnesic period, a relatively intact "island" of episodic memories could be uncovered. The distinction between episodic and semantic memo

Mental Scene and Memory Construction and the Hippocampus.

A neurocomputational theory of scene and memory construction during memory recall, prospective thinking, and autobiographical memory is described. The theory describes the nature of the representation of scenes using spatial view cells in a continuous attractor network in the medial parahippocampal cortex, and how the location in the scene being represented can be shifted by self-motion eye position update even when the scene is not visible. The theory builds on the evidence for humans for a ventromedial visual cortical scene pathway via the prostriate cortex and ventromedial visual cortical r

A Systematic review and meta-analysis on prospective memory rehabilitation in adults with non-progressive acquired brain injury.

Prospective memory (PM) is often impaired following acquired brain injury (ABI). However, its rehabilitation remains challenging for neuropsychologists. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness, durability, and real-life impact of PM interventions in adults suffering from non-progressive ABI. Twenty-seven studies published between January 2008 and December 2024 met the inclusion criteria: fourteen randomized controlled trials (RCTs), seven non-randomized trials, four pre-post studies, and two case series. Ten RCTs were includ

Concept Cells and the Neural Bases of Human Memory.

Single-neuron recordings from the medial temporal lobe of patients undergoing epilepsy surgery have revealed "concept cells" that respond selectively and invariantly to meaningful stimuli such as specific people, places, or objects. These responses offer a unique window into how individual neurons encode high-level, multimodal representations-the building blocks of episodic memory-that differ from the more distributed, often hierarchical representations supporting semantic memory in the neocortex. Episodic and semantic memory, the systems for storing past experiences and conceptual knowledge,
