We present a three dimensional finite element analysis of stress distribution and menisci deformation in the human knee joint. The study is based on the Open Knee model with the geometry of the lateral meniscus which shows some degenerative disorders. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a worldwide disease in aged people, causing not only physical suffering to the patients themselves, but also a great burden on their families and on society. Ganglion cysts that compress the common peroneal nerve frequently arise from the proximal tibiofibular joint. In a 60-year-old man, the nerve was compressed by a cyst that arose from the lateral meniscus and extended around the posterolateral aspect of the fibular neck. The origin and extent of the lesion, which could not be determined by clinical examination, was seen through magnetic resonance imaging. Cysts arising from the lateral meniscus should be considered in the differential diagnosis of compression of the common peroneal nerve.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that medial meniscotibial ligament (MTL) deficiency and medial meniscus extrusion may precede the development of some medial meniscus posterior root (MMPR) tears. However, no study has investigated the biomechanical consequences of MTL deficiency on the MMPR.
