IMPORTANCE: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has been associated with anxiety and depression, but the association of socioeconomic factors and temporality has yet to be fully explored.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the bidirectional risk of anxiety and depression for patients with CRS.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study of the National Institutes of Health All of Us database from January 1, 2008, to December 31, 2018, included 2 cohorts of adult patients with and without CRS. The data were analyzed from July 1, 2023, through April 1, 2024. Patients were classified as ha

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an innovative and non-invasive technique used in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders. Repetitive TMS (rTMS) can modulate neuronal activity, neuroplasticity and arousal of the waking and sleeping brain, and, more generally, overall mental health. Numerous studies have examined the predictors of the efficacy of rTMS on clinical outcome variables in various psychiatric disorders. These predictors often encompass the stimulated brain region's location, electroencephalogram (EEG) activity patterns, potential morphological

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review recent research on the epidemiology and etiology of suicide in the global context. We focus on data from low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), with the goal of highlighting findings from these under-researched, over-burdened settings.
RECENT FINDINGS: Prevalence of suicide in LMIC adults varies across region and country income-level, but is, on average, lower than in high-income countries. Recent gains in suicide reduction, however, have been smaller in LMIC compared to global rates. LMIC youth have much higher rates of suicide attempts than youth from high-inc

The practice of psychiatry and psychology in prisons is essential because of the high prevalence of mental disorders that is observed. Psychiatrists and psychologists, such as other health care professionals, should be affiliated to the health department and intervene in the therapeutic role, which must be distinguished from the role of the psychiatric expert mandated by the court. Therapy in prison is challenging because of the sometimes contradictory issues, at the interface of clinical, societal, security, legal and political fields. Health care professionals can thus be subject to importan

In recent years, different forms of poverty and their interaction with mental illness have been in the focus of research, although the implementation of action in mental health care and policy making so far is scarce. This perspective article offers different perspectives of poverty and its reciprocal association with mental illness and outlines possible future research and policy implications. We will approach the topic of poverty from various levels: On a micro-level, focusing on absolute poverty with precarious housing and malnutrition. On a meso-level, on neighborhood-related poverty as a

At least one in seven pregnant or recently postpartum women will experience a mental illness such as an anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, or substance use disorder. These mental illnesses have detrimental effects on the health of the mother, child, and family, but little is known about the hypothalamic and other neural correlates of maternal mental health concerns. The transition to parenthood alone is a time of remarkable neural plasticity, so it is perhaps not surprising that current research is showing that maternal mental illness has unique neural profiles. Furthermore, the neural sys

Across the landscape of mental health research and diagnosis, there is a diverse range of questionnaires and interviews available for use by clinicians and researchers to determine patient treatment plans or investigate internal and external etiologies. Although individually, these tools have each been assessed for their validity and reliability, there is little research examining the consistency between them in terms of what symptoms they assess, and how they assess those symptoms. Here, we provide an analysis of 126 different questionnaires and interviews commonly used to diagnose and screen

INTRODUCTION: There has long been an interest in the effects of diet on mental health, and the interaction of the two with stress; however, the nature of these relationships is not well understood. Although associations between diet, obesity and the related metabolic syndrome (MetS), stress, and mental disorders exist, causal pathways have not been established.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature on the relationship between diet, stress, obesity and psychiatric disorders related to stress.
RESULTS: Diet and obesity can affect mood through direct effects, or stress-related mental disorders co

Neuroimaging is an invaluable diagnostic tool for sorting through the vast array of etiologies that underlie altered mental status (AMS). Head computed tomography (CT) without contrast is the primary modality for evaluation of AMS and should be complemented by MR imaging in cases of negative CT but high clinical concern. Studies to maximize brain imaging efficiency and improve the yield of positive scans through the utilization of clinical and laboratory pre-scan diagnostics are ongoing. However, imaging remains the gold standard due to its rapidity with which certain diagnoses can be made or

The impact of infections and inflammation during pregnancy on the developing fetal brain remains incompletely defined, with important clinical and research gaps. Although the classic infectious TORCH pathogens (ie, Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus [CMV], herpes simplex virus) are known to be directly teratogenic, emerging evidence suggests that these infections represent the most extreme end of a much larger spectrum of injury. We present the accumulating evidence that prenatal exposure to a wide variety of viral and bacterial infections-or simply inflammation-may subtly alter

BACKGROUND: Cultures play a significant role not only in the causation and management of emotional distress and psychiatric disorders but also in sexual variation and attitudes towards sexual minority groups.
AIM: To discuss the potential impact of culture on sexual minorities.
METHOD: This lecture reviews the relation between sexuality, culture and mental health.
RESULTS: Cultures define what is deviant and unacceptable or even illegal. Attitudes to sex, perceived role of and actual sexual activity are very strongly influenced by cultural values. Cultures may see sexual activity as largely

Should excessive and problematic engagement in nonsubstance use behaviors be mental disorders? The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) repositioned gambling disorder in the substance use disorders section and introduced Internet gaming disorder in the research appendix; the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) is also considering it. This article outlines pros and cons of considering behavioral addictions as mental disorders and also reviews the DSM-5 decision-making processes. It focuses on three conditions: gambling disorder, Intern

PURPOSE: Enlarged mental tubercles are rare benign exostoses that occur in children. The purpose of this study was to report a case series of patients with hypertrophic mental tubercles and propose a theory for their etiopathogenesis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective case series of patients with hypertrophic mental tubercles, we reviewed patients' medical records for age, gender, clinical presentation, findings on physical examination and radiographic images, and management details. Descriptive data were summarized.
RESULTS: The sample included 14 patients (71% of whom were male p

Essential facts [Figure: see text] Learning disabilities affect about 1.5 million people in the UK. The prevalence of mental health problems is considerably higher for those with learning disabilities than for the general population; estimates suggest 30-50% of adults are affected.

Misophonia, a phenomenon first described in the audiology literature, is characterized by intense emotional reactions (e.g., anger, rage, anxiety, disgust) in response to highly specific sounds, particularly sounds of human origin such as oral or nasal noises made by other people (e.g., chewing, sniffing, slurping, lip smacking). Misophonia is not listed in any of the contemporary psychiatric classification systems. Some investigators have argued that misophonia should be regarded as a new mental disorder, falling within the spectrum of obsessive-compulsive related disorders. Other researchers
