Nonvascular mesenteric disease: utility of multidetector CT with 3D volume rendering.

Creation of isotropic volumes with submillimeter multidetector computed tomography (CT) has expanded interpretative practice to routinely include two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) postprocessing techniques. Currently, 2D multiplanar reformatting, maximum intensity projection, and 3D volume rendering are available on most workstations. Only volume rendering yields a 3D display that depicts all tissue types from any orientation. Utility is not limited to vascular applications, as 3D volume rendering can be used to evaluate neoplastic, infectious, and inflammatory processes that aff

A case report of colonic Ameboma mimicking colon cancer in an immunocompromised patient.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Entamoeba histolytica is an anaerobic protozoan. It infects humans causing Amoebiasis. Most infections are asymptomatic; however, clinical manifestations include intestinal or extraintestinal. In rare instances, patients can present with Ameboma: a mass of granulation tissue consisting of a core of inflammation with peripheral fibrosis related to chronic amoebic infection usually found in the cecum/ascending colon. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 50-year-old patient presented with signs and symptoms of bowel obstruction. He had raised inflammatory markers and was HIV posi

Severe Vascular and Ductal Complications of a Pancreatic Pseudocyst: A Case of Hemorrhage, Superior Mesenteric Vein (SMV) Compression, Duct Disconnection, and Portal Vein Thrombosis.

Pancreatic pseudocysts (PPCs) are a common complication of chronic pancreatitis, particularly in alcohol-related disease. While many pseudocysts resolve spontaneously, enlarging or symptomatic collections may lead to hemorrhage, vascular compression, thrombosis, or disconnected pancreatic duct syndrome (DPDS), a condition increasingly recognized in patients with necrotizing pancreatitis. A 62-year-old man with chronic alcohol-related pancreatitis and recurrent PPCs presented with several weeks of severe epigastric pain radiating to the back. Computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed two enlarg

Approach to Cystic Lesions in the Abdomen and Pelvis, with Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation.

Cystic lesions found in and around the peritoneal cavity can often be challenging to diagnose owing to significant overlap in imaging appearance between the different entities. When the cystic lesion can be recognized to arise from one of the solid abdominal organs, the differential considerations can be more straightforward; however, many cystic lesions, particularly when large, cannot be clearly associated with one of the solid organs. Cystic lesions arising from the mesentery and peritoneum are less commonly encountered and can be caused by relatively rare entities or by a variant appearanc

Immunization with excreted-secreted antigens reduces tissue cyst formation in pigs.

It has been demonstrated that tachyzoite-pooled excreted-secreted antigens (ESAs) of Toxoplasma gondii are highly immunogenic and can be used in vaccine development. However, most of the information regarding protective immunity induced by immunization with ESAs is derived from studies using mouse model systems. These results cannot be extrapolated to pigs due to important differences in the susceptibility and immune response mechanisms between pigs and mice. We show that the immunization of pigs with ESAs emulsified in Freund's adjuvant induced not only a humoral immune response but also a ce

Idiopathic pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis of the small bowel with perforation and congenital duodenal membranous stenosis and malrotation of intestine. A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) in children is a disorder characterized by gas-filled cystic lesions located in the submucosa and subserosa of any segment of the gastrointestinal tract, with pneumoperitoneum occurring in partial cases. This disease is well recognized as an early imaging sign of necrotizing enterocolitis secondary to intestinal ischemia in preterm neonates, yet PCI is rare in older children. Unlike pneumatosis intestinalis associated with life-threatening conditions such as neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis and mesenteric ischemia, PCI is generally regar

Parasite distribution and associated immune response during the acute phase of Toxoplasma gondii infection in sheep.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a major cause of reproductive disorders and abortions in the sheep industry, and therefore responsible for important financial and economic losses. In addition, undercooked infected lamb is an important risk factor for human toxoplasmosis. In the present study, the initial phase of the infection was investigated: the parasite's entry site, the subsequent distribution of the parasite and the host-immune response. RESULTS: Parasite DNA was already detected in the cranial small intestinal mucosa the first days after oral infection w

Isolation and molecular characterization of Toxoplasma gondii from captive slender-tailed meerkats (Suricata suricatta) with fatal toxoplasmosis in Argentina.

In this study, the diagnosis of fatal disseminated toxoplasmosis in three captive slender-tailed meerkats (Suricata suricatta) in the zoo of La Plata, Argentina and the invitro isolation and molecular characterization of Toxoplasma gondii are reported. The animals showed depression, dyspnea and hypothermia, and also ataxia in one case, and died within 1-5 days. The main histopathological lesions included interstitial pneumonia, non-suppurative inflammatory changes and focal necrosis in liver, spleen, kidney and brain. Tachyzoites or tissue cysts were present in lung, liver, spleen, brain, stri

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors: CT and MRI findings.

The objective of this study was to report the CT and MRI appearances of primary and metastatic gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). The clinical and imaging findings of 31 patients with histological and immunohistochemical diagnosis of GIST were reviewed. The CT and MRI findings were assessed independently for size, location, enhancement characteristics, and pattern of metastatic disease. The tumors were of enteric (n=13), gastric (n=12), duodenal (n=2), and rectal (n=3) origin. In one case the primary site was the mesentery, without involvement of bowel. Primary tumors were typically exophy

Protective mucosal Th2 immune response against Toxoplasma gondii by murine mesenteric lymph node dendritic cells.

Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate intracellular parasite pathogen which initially invades the intestinal epithelium before disseminating throughout the body, may cause severe sequelae in fetuses and life-threatening neuropathy in immunocompromised patients. Immune protection is usually thought to be performed through a systemic Th1 response; considering the route of parasite entry it is important to study and characterize the local mucosal immune response to T. gondii. Despite considerable effort, Toxoplasma-targeted vaccines have proven to be elusive using conventional strategies. We report the

Combined Treatment of Multiple Splanchnic Artery Aneurysms Secondary to Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome: A Case Study and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND Median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is a rare and often misdiagnosed condition affecting about 0.4% of the population, typically ages 20-50 years old, and more frequently females. Caused by the compression of the celiac artery and adjacent nervous structures by the median arcuate ligament, it is typically manifested by postprandial abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting, and loss of weight. This condition also results in compensatory increased blood flow in peripancreatic arcades, facilitating formation of true aneurysms of the visceral vessels. CASE REPORT A 45-year-old woman with

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: case report and review of literature.

Pneumatosis intestinalis is the presence of gas in the bowel wall and is divided into two categories: life-threatening pneumatosis intestinalis and benign pneumatosis intestinalis. Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a rare condition characterized by gas-filled cysts in submucosa and subserosa. The pathogenesis is unclear, although some causes have been theorized. The presenting clinical findings may be very heterogeneous. Intestinal pneumatosis may lead to various complications. Distinguishing between pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis and life-threatening pneumatosis intestinalis may be ch

Large retroperitoneal isolated fibrous cyst in absence of preceding trauma or acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Isolated retroperitoneal cystic masses are uncommon with an estimated incidence of 1/5750 to 1/250,000. The majority present with size related symptoms, complications, or a mass. Approximately a third of patients are asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally. Aetiologies of retroperitoneal cystic masses (RPC) include mesenteric, omental, splenic and enteric duplication cysts. Neoplastic RPCs can be divided into epithelial (mucinous or serous cystadenoma), mesothelial (mesothelioma), germ cell (cystic teratoma) and cystic changes in a solid neoplasm (paraganglioma, neurilemmoma, s

Peripancreatic vascular involvements of autoimmune pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Although peripancreatic vascular lesions are occasionally encountered in autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), there are few reports focusing on these involvements. We aimed to investigate the peripancreatic vascular involvements associated with AIP. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 54 AIP patients who met the International Consensus Diagnostic Criteria for AIP between July 2003 and October 2010. All of the 54 patients were subjected to multiphasic multidetector computed tomography, and the prevalence, location and prognosis of peripancreatic vascular involvements were invest

[A case of microcystic cystadenoma treated by duodenum preserving pancreatic head resection].

Cystic neoplasms of the pancreas constitute about 9% of all cystic lesions of the pancreas and less than 1% of all pancreatic neoplasms. The case of a 70 years-old woman with microcystic cystadenoma is reported. CT-scan of the abdomen diagnosed a 5 cm multilocular septated cyst, with calcifications in the context, localized in the head-uncinate process of the pancreas. The mass was well separated by a sharp cleavage plane with portal vein and superior mesenteric vessels. An ERCP showed cephalic symmetrical stenosis (diameter 3 mm) of the main pancreatic duct (MPD), mildly dilated in the remain

Blunt pancreatic trauma. Role of CT.

PURPOSE: To define the evolution patterns of blunt pancreatic trauma, and to point out the CT features most significant for the diagnosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten cases of pancreatic trauma, observed over a period of about 10 years, were analyzed in retrospect. The cases were divided into 3 groups according to the time that had elapsed between trauma and first CT: early phase (within 72 h: n=3/10); late phase (after 10 days: n=3/10); and following pancreatic drainage (n=4/10). RESULTS: In the early phase, one case showed a blood collection surrounding the pancreatic head and duodenum, and
