BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the urogenital system frequently coexist with renal abnormalities due to their shared origin from the intermediate mesoderm. Skeletal anomalies may also be associated, reflecting overlapping embryological development of mesodermal derivatives. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a multisystem neurocutaneous disorder. Scoliosis and dural ectasia are features of the associated mesodermal dysplasia. Lateral thoracic meningoceles can develop in NF1 and progressively enlarge due to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pulsations. Large meningoceles can cause compressive symptoms in the thorax. Polyps of the ureter are benign primary tumors of mesodermal origin. These are less common because the majority of benign tumors are epithelial in origin [2-10]. Two cases are described here. The differential diagnosis and the management of fibrous benign polyps of the ureter are discussed.

Urethral tumors are rare and aggressive. They usually affect men (2:1) and occur more commonly in white (85% of cases). Soft tissue sarcomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors that arise from embryonic mesoderm. It represents 1% of all cases of urinary tract malignancies and rarely primary affect the ureter. We report a case of male urethral sarcoma. To date, only two similar cases have been published in literature.

Fibroepithelial polyps are rare benign tumors originating from the mesoderm and are more commonly found in the renal pelvis and distal ureter and less frequently in the proximal ureter or bladder. This case report presents a fibroepithelial polyp occurring in the bladder of the fetus, showcasing its two-dimensional ultrasound, three-dimensional ultrasound, color Doppler, and spectral Doppler ultrasound findings, providing a reference for the accurate diagnosis of this condition.

Heterotopic adrenal cortex is usually found in the kidney, retroperitoneum and spermatic cord. The adrenal gland has a dual embryonic origin: the cortex arises from the mesoderm and the medulla from ectoderm of the neural crest. Adrenal cortex and gonads both arise from genital ridge, because of that adrenal tissue with descending gonads may migrate in early embryonic period. We report a case of adrenal rest in upper pole of testes.

We report on two sibs with high myopia, vitreoretinal degeneration (VRD), and occipital encephalocoele or scalp lesion. We review the literature on Knobloch syndrome, discuss possible causes, and suggest a possible involvement of mesoderm in the morphogenesis. One case presents with very early onset of severe eye disease, whereas the other is notable for the very mild scalp defect. In addition, both appear to have an unusual pulmonary lymphatic condition.

Two cases of benign polyps of the ureter are reported with emphasis on the uroradiological features and methods of evaluation in the diagnosis of benign mesodermal tumors of the ureter.
